- jkdrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don’t mean to be a nerd here but electrons are not produced they are extracted from atoms or molecules. I would like to know what chemicals are being broke down into what. Otherwise it would be cool to convert your septic tank into a huge battery.
- rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just finished writing with some friends a research paper for my town's wastewater treatment plant. The theme is on the reuse of wastewater sludge as a fuel, and the reuse of wastewater sludge ash as an additive or filler.
I'm not allowed to talk about the details because of a NDA... but I'm glad to see a lot of cities worldwide are heading towards a poop-powered society.
An interesting article I found a few months ago at biosolids.org: < http://biosolids.org/news_weekly.asp?id=1889 >, (last article, at the bottom).. talks about Tokyo's new approach to managing their sludge generation... 3,500 daily tons! - egbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It does not mention how much current was generated. I'm sure it was not that much.

- mutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Once you get used to the smell of rendered human waste, you'll never know how you lived without it.
mmm, human waste.. - peanutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Slightly related - I have a friend who is doing research on treatment of industrial waste using bacteria. The bacteria release a lot of methane in the process - a good source of power.
- cablemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Talk about a renewable energy sources!
- MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whow the most impressive fact is that the fuel cell actually *evolved* and became 3 times more efficient over the course of 200 days ... This opens a whole new perspective ;p
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Americans were extracting energy from feces over 150 years ago. They used to gather up buffalo 'chips', and burn 'em.
I'd be impressed if this scheme was more efficient than just burning waste products (which can then be used to heat a steam-based generator).
I guess it probably releases less junk into the atmosphere. - Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree. Now that's some resourcefulness! Let's start using our heaps of building garbage to make electricity! Go researchers.
- RavenXeo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5wow.....thats....wow.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I always want to pee on my laptop when it runs outta juice.....
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, great, not another story from the Microbes fanbois. Oh, wait, microbes.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Talk about taking the piss...
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Now we have a reason to consume all that food!
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6only going to be a matter of time before people start thanking you for pissing in their gas tank
- joelsp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2That is so very very cool. We may have an infinite power source yet!
- coolian, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Great, I always knew my pee had power.
