- Caalro, on 12/27/2008, -2/+124What about the basic urge to Command & Conquer?
- allothersnsused, on 12/27/2008, -1/+96Funny, I thought men enjoyed computer games because they were ***** awesome.
- vinceislegend, on 12/27/2008, -1/+76In other news, women like makeup "because of basic urge to look attractive".
- seeanimal, on 12/26/2008, -3/+60Another report from The Department Of The Bleeding Obvious.
- hbyrne, on 12/26/2008, -4/+37He he. That old basic urge to conquer, AKA Testosterone.
- Tonicks, on 12/27/2008, -3/+30Don't forget the urge to shoot hookers in the face.
- Sucka27, on 12/27/2008, -5/+30WTF, you have a computer in the kitchen?
- username7410, on 12/27/2008, -0/+20They found a cure, it's called video games.
- venomoushealer, on 12/27/2008, -1/+20I love how this article mentions that men love more aggressive games, but the picture shows two guys playing the Wii? I know Wii Sports can get intense, but they could have picked a better picture...
- metapop, on 12/27/2008, -0/+18"nintendo wii widows"? i have a wii and love it, but twilight princess is really the only game i've spent great amounts of time on... super mario galaxy was fun too. mario kart is a blast, but there really are no great 'stay up until 4am trying to get past so-and-so' games yet... i hope they're on their way. my wife plays the wii the most, she got animal crossing and loves it.
- superflydugg, on 12/27/2008, -1/+18i think it provides us guys with a healthy outlet for that feeling, i mean we used to conquer each other this is much better.
- pogoyoyo, on 12/27/2008, -1/+17Oh *****..
Next thing you know they're trying to find a cure for this precious urge.. - jkmerr, on 12/27/2008, -1/+16Odd how it's OK to say men enjoy computer games because of something innate that drives us to become "tyrants" (to use a word from the article) and that's why more men play the games than women, but a few years ago when the president of Harvard suggested that men might go into science and math more than women because of something else innate he was drummed out of his job.
- c07g, on 12/26/2008, -5/+19Heard about this a while back.
BTW how is this sexist? - gixxer600, on 12/27/2008, -0/+14hahahahahahahh
- gogog0, on 12/27/2008, -2/+14really? have you ever taken a biology or psychology course? men have a greater urge to be industrious and obtain social status and power because those are characteristics that women mainly look for in men. (women on the other hand have a greater urge than men to be physically attractive because that is what men primarily look for in women.) Most engineers and scientist are men because men have greater spatial intelligence than women (women have greater verbal intelligence than men). All of this stems from how men and women have evolved. Women benefited in having mates that were industrious and socially powerful because they could provide the best resources. Men benefited from having women that were physically fit and attractive because these women were more successful at rearing children. Despite what feminists try to say, men and women are inherently different. This does not mean that one gender is superior and one is inferior, rather that there are biological differences.
some background reading if you want to educate yourself:
http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/articles/media/2005_ ... - HomeNucleonics, on 12/27/2008, -0/+11We are all animals and each sex has it's different role for every animal in the animal kingdom. When we were hunter-gatherers, this was much more apparent. Sure we have technology and a more advanced society as a whole, but those instincts are still deep within us. Men were better at hunting, fighting, and building, while women were better at making clothes, gathering food, and taking care of children. I'm not saying that women couldn't hunt animals and men couldn't take care of children, but each sex was biologically wired to do their certain role. There's nothing anybody could do about this, being politically correct all the time to not hurt anyone's feelings is just avoiding reality.
- Velocity14, on 12/27/2008, -1/+11Well, if you take into account our basic instincts to hunt and kill and transfer them into today's "microwave generation" where everything is readily given to us... it makes sense. We're hardwired with this natural instinct to have to survive in the world... It is heavily repressed by society of today, having shelter pretty much guaranteed (for most) and food handed to us with ease. We naturally substitute these instincts with fantasies to feed the inner desire we didn't know we had to pay attention to. Often, people get addicted to these fantasies to give importance to the void in their life. It's entertaining because it's instinct. It's even more entertaining because we can quit the game when we're getting our asses kicked and not feel the consequences of being the overly meek beings we really are.
Then there are people like me, who stumble onto Digg slightly intoxicated and attempt to make intellectual banter for conversation from the lack of it in real life. ...Damn... Anyone else even a little drunk tonight? - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -4/+13Men playing computer games have the urge to teabag his hunting trophy.
- Evocati, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9How can you fail at a fail?
- bknoll22, on 12/27/2008, -1/+10facts coming from a study =\= sexist. It just shows a trend for the majority not all cases. But I'm sure you already understood that before writing your comment.
- CrushThemTorg, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9They're parading a console whose biggest titles involve collecting stars, doing yoga and playing music as the poster-child for conquest?
- viper1344, on 12/27/2008, -3/+11nice one =D
- chaos7, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Command & Conquer is such a great name
- ckhw2, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8I knew it! Computer games are part of the grand conspiracy to suppress the next Alexander the Great. /s
- Zarokima, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9But what makes them ***** awesome? DOMINATION!
- paulhendrixson, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Buried as inaccurate - I do it because I like to Command and Conquer.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7this would have been so much more appropriate.

I salute my fellow armchair Generals. - spiralspirit, on 12/27/2008, -3/+9Any supposed "fact" that is proved by correlation instead of causation ("it doesn't take a genius to figure out that all the tyrants and conquerors in history were men") should not be accepted as a truism without actually critically inspecting it.
Firstly - yes most of the world leader in history and even today are men. At the same time there is no proof that there is some genetic need for men to conquer based on that alone - that is simply correlation. If you look at history and even today most engineers and scientists are men - does that mean men have some basic need to be smart and discover that women don't? Oh, does that sound sexist to you? - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6That's right: we men ARE ***** awesome.
- JCPahl, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6Maybe not so much Hitler as Alexander.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -3/+8Because it implies that men are in someway different in their enjoyment of their computer games than women. (Say The Raging Feminazis)
- Mujokan, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5With all these things you have to go a bit deeper into them than just the headline. The point is looking for actual gender-based differences in the way the brain works, pinned down to specific regions. This is a controversial area -- try talking to an old-school feminist about biologically-derived differences in the way men and women think.
It actually was published around the start of the year. Don't know why the Telegraph is picking up on it now. More details: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/08020 ...
Here is the paper if anyone is interested. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleUR ... - gogog0, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6Even after reading your comment several times I don't know if you're trying to say the article is sexist towards men or women. Anyway science and psychology deal with absolute truths. What ought to be isn't always what is.
- harmo777, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6ah i see what you did there!
- Resch17, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4That kinda makes sense. I buy it.
But, then again, I might be a bit wasted as well... - stuma9000, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5The snipe at feminists is unnecessary and inaccurate. Standard feminism acknowledges the differences between men and women and seeks to value them. Otherwise good post.
- ZeeSniper, on 12/27/2008, -2/+6I dont know about any of you guys, but i play video games because im just plain bored out of my mind all the time
- alex7575, on 12/27/2008, -2/+6You sound like a woman... How's that for sexist?
- evilesttoast, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4I remember being a young boy playing the first C&C game screaming as my tank rush destroyed the enemy base...those were the days.
- eratus, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5What am I doing typing on Digg? I'm firing up C&C Red Alert 3.,..
- dantenhickville, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Or maybe games are simply the most bang for your buck. I could to house work or level up materia. tough choice. or i could watch some cry baby on a reality show. if you live in a colder climate video games are hands down the cheapest way to spend your time. so you could make another stupid correlation that men like video games because they're cheap.
- HomeNucleonics, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4You make sense more than 80% of the people in the comments.
- Koushiro, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Did someone really pay researches to examine the link between fun making you feel good?
- steviesteveo, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3That's what she said.
- johnnykalma, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Too bad Red Alert 3 was such a disapointment. C&C 3 was a FAR better game IMHO.
- danthemanhan, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3I feel computer games are lacking in realism. That's why I take the time to satiate my basic urge to control by annexing my neighbors garage from time to time.
- sillymeganlee, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4As a girl who loves video games, I'd just like to take the time to tell you to shut the hell up.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -4/+7So I'm not a nerd! You hear that, Dad!?
- redgiemental, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Buy a second Wii?
They aren't that expensive. -
