Mapping 'Self' And 'Other' In The Brain
eurekalert.org — Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) have mapped not only where trust forms in the brain but have also uncovered clues as to how humans represent themselves and others as physical responses in their brains. Results are reported in this week's issue of the journal Science.

- Serenade713, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Soon humans will be able to use this technology to create a residual self with this information and modern graphic interfaces.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Next on the home shopping channel: Custom bred "Yes" Men assorted 12 pack. Perfect for board meetings, proposals, and even commenting on your ridiculous Thursday afternoon golf wear.
- subway18223, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3What the hell are you talking about?
- Kendal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the point RamdomS. is making has to do with the technology being appied to produce a bread of compliant man for purchase by power wielding corperations, they'd appoint the men to the board in order to have their agenda met, or for other life examples where men agree where they should, or where they shouldn't.
I think that's the goose successfully disected, now where are the golden eggs? - jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2Ummmmmmm ok??
- ywong137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, I will explain it AGAIN for those who didn't get Kendal:
He is saying the technology will be used to produce compliant individuals to serve the purposes of others.
- kayla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bred.. bread.. breed?
- TyRaNNOus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On a similar note, we have already created robots which have some concept of self and others. It can recognize itself from an exact robot in a mirror mimicking it. Preety interesting stuff.

- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha, this will stuff up my university humanities professors, who taught that "self" and "other" are just socially-defined constructs with a loose connection to the physical world. Ahem.
- drboggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it won't. Just because there is a physical reality doesn't mean that social constructs don't accumulate around the so-called reality, and assume more power in social systems than the "physical reality" itself. There may be an innate ability to distinguish between self and other -- but racism and slavery don't necessarily follow (are only "loosely connected to the physical world" to use your phrase) -- yet both racism and slavery are historical and social facts.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blast. I knew there was a reason why they were professors and I was just a lazy undergrad.
- Kendal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your university humanities professors might have been referencing the Buddhist precept, that individuality/separateness, is an illusion, and that all living things are one and the same. A nice thought, if it means someone else will pay my bills...
- dtimoney, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1gotta love modern medicine - especailly if you are having a heart attack:)
