- kyzel, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7You know there's a reply option, right? It's over there ----------------------------------->
- jperras, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6Please correct me if I'm wrong as I just skimmed through the article, but I don't believe the solution to the problem lies in Africa, rather it's the citizens of other countries who are willing to spend the high amount of $$$ for the products. As long as the demand is there, poor Africans will no doubt risk killing elephants, the temptation is just to great.
- smitas, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Wow!
- rameznabel, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4i will breed you to cut your penis . is this ok!!??
- tehknotte, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3***** savages, leave those elephants be
- Xfer00, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3FTA: "However, Japanese authorities - who had made another seizure of ivory that summer in Osaka - refused to co-operate and have since burnt the 260 tusks they found before their origins could be established."
I don't understand the point of burning the ivory when it's already been removed from the elephant. Keeping them from killing elephants is one thing, but then burning the ivory instead of putting it to use after the elephant's already been killed seems incredibly wasteful, especially since the only reason they've burned it is to keep up appearances.
The elephants are dead by the time you get the ivory, it should at least be used so the elephant didn't die pointlessly. Way to add wastefulness to failure. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5I am glad there’s technology to find out where these illegal smugglers get these ivory.
- walruspanzer, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3Africa is a messed up place, status begets bloodshed and violence - diamonds, silver, salt, ivory.
- Oztog, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2They should modify elephants to shed and re-grow tusks
- mksmothers, on 06/30/2009, -2/+4Why not simply breed elephants for ivory? That would significantly cut down on illegal poaching.
- Krakerjax, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Poor smugglers, its not even fair for them anymore.
- gearhead364, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2The modern day advancements in technology always seem to impress me, not to mention the creativity of scientists.
- hawkspur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2That was before we knew wtf we were doing and the impact it had on populations.
- s0nicfreak, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1With the 22 month gestation period, the 2 - 3 years it takes for the permanent tusks to begin to grow, and the fact that they only grow about 7 inches a year, I don't think feeding it would be cost-effective.
- SimpsonsQuote, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3Well, little girl, I've had lots of jobs in my day: whale-hunter, seal-clubber, president of the Fox network, and, like most people, yeah, I've dealt a little ivory.
- Noein, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Why not wiki "Domestication" and read up on the subject yourself?
- Sangreal2007, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2That's way easier said than done. Elephants aren't exactly easy animals to keep penned up in large quantities.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1First slavery and now THIS. When will 19th century Europe learn?
- hawkspur, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1They weren't "evil". They were living hundreds of years ago and had different standards of what is morally and ethically acceptable.
- shrudheuie, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Should make it that much easier to find, kill and use the ***** as examples.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1Why not simply breed you to pass on your stupidity to future generations. Oh wait...
- Presbyterian, on 06/30/2009, -1/+0Yeah, I'm sure those 19th century colonialists weren't evil or anything....
- Lane, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1Must be one huge Animus they got over there in Africa.
- Presbyterian, on 06/30/2009, -1/+0Just remember that alot of Western powers were hunting for ivory during their colonization of Africa.

People are being killed everyday for diamonds, but that hasn't put a dent in that business. Unfortunately until it directly hurts them, most people don't give a *****.
