- patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I couldn't find the actual video, but here's someone solving it in 12.11 seconds for an idea:

And a joke 10 second video:

The "geek" from CalTech on Beauty and the Geek is from Caltech and (was?) a world-champion Rubik's cube solver. He also did it with his eyes closed in under a minute.
- stumpadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I have a buddy at school who's going to CalTech in the fall, and he can do the thing in under a minute with his eyes closed to. And yes...he's asian...
He was on that World's Smartest Kids or whatever it was called on Fox waaaay back during that whole gameshow phase america went through... - Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got one when they first came out in the early 80's. I still haven't finished it. That's got to be some sort of anti-record? :o)
I can't imagine the speed of his hands! - theISABELfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad he's always home.
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
What they failed to tell us was that the only move required was one twist. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My personal record is 23 years, 5 months, and 12 days.
beat that! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want to see a video of this first, id like to see it with my own eyes
- rubikfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I solve an average of under 30 seconds. No kidding. That's why my name is "rubikfreak". I actually met the guy that set the world record.
- redwineandblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kids these days... (+digg)
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can memorize the approximately 150 algorithms in the "speedcubing" method, it's easy to get times consistently under 30 seconds. And as bryan986 said, the state of the cube after being shuffled can play a fairly significant part in determining how long it takes to solve the cube. As previous records were around 20 seconds, it's not that hard to imagine that it could be done in under 12 seconds.
- YourMemories, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the video is on metadata.com
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"These record are complete rubbish. It all depends on how the cube was mixed up before they try to solve it. Sometimes it is easier to solve, other times it is much harder."
It's computerized/calculated so that it's the same degree of "randomness" every time. - chickenrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what their secret is. I have memorized the 7 step technique provided with the cube and I average 2-5 minutes. I once got lucky and was able to skip 2 steps and get uner 2 minutes. I also don't understand the with your eyes closed thing. You can run the sequences with your eyes closed, but you have to look in between sequences to see if you need to repeat them or not.

- sgt99999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I was a boy we solved our Rubik's Cube barefoot in the snow. Kid's today have it too easy!
- ejschaefer, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I had a trig teacher in high school that could do it in 45 seconds behind his back...the guy's insane
- himynameiznate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When your claim to fame is holding the world record for solving the Rubiks Cube, that kind of manual dexterity will come in handy every Saturday night.
- jobeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pics and video of the event

"... and a computer program was used to scramble the cubes in the same fashion for each round to give the contestants equal footing."
So before commenting about "luck" and such, read the article. - pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the geeks from Beauty and the Geek claimed to be a world record holder -
Rubik's Cube Record Holder
Hometown: Hillsborough, California
A senior graduating this May with a bachelor of science degree in astrophysics from the California Institute of Technology, 21-year-old Tyson is internationally recognized as a Rubik’s Cube champ. Taught by his younger brother only two-and-a-half years ago, he recently competed in the Rubik's World Championship, placing 9th overall in the 3x3x3 speed solve competition and 2nd in the 3x3x3 blindfold competition. He went into the blindfold competition as the world record holder, but, unfortunately, lost to his friend. A violinist for 17 years, Tyson also enjoys juggling and is a pro at the music video game “Dance Dance Revolution. - VoraciousPanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not only do you need to memorize a lot of algorithms, but you also have to learn quite a few "finger tricks" in order to move the sides of the cube quickly.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@bryan986: In speedcubing, so-called "lucky solves" are made less effective by the rules. The offical time a competitor gets for an event is the average of 10 of 12 solves (the best and worst time are removed). Even then, if he gets two lucky solves, the speedcubing community doesn't count the 2nd lucky solve as a record. And since there are specific methods to solving the cube, everyone knows what's considered lucky and what's not. Basically, every "step" in the algorithm needs to be used for it to count.
And either way, 11.13 seconds is incredible. I can assure you he didn't just "get lucky" though.
/currently at 1'30"... - prosinader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too smart with too much time on his hands, should be solving important things like world peace, which came first - chicken or egg, who shuts the door after the buss driver gets off - something like that.
...or at least get a girlfriend - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn! You can't even peel the stickers off and put them back on that fast.
- Digital.Totem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"My previous best time in competition was 25 (seconds) and I beat that, like, all ten solves, so I was really happy with that," Pernsteiner said. Well she may be able to solve a Rubik's cube faster than I can, a lot faster, but it's nice to see that she still speaks just like every other 14 year old girl. Why do people still use "like" in such a manner, like gag me with a spoon.
- cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, always those people who cannot admit somebody else is better than they are -- so they start throwing mud...
Mankind is sooo predictable!
If a bit of SearchEngineUsage is too much for the average self-styled sceptic, here are my bookmarks for the Rubik's Cube, which have always had enough links for further reading, and trying, and failing, snd trying... ;)

says the guys who spend all day surfing on the net and making fun of people in the comment sections of webpages. - Half-Fast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Back in Jr. High when they first came out I could do it in about 35 secs. after buying a how to solve one book and a lot of practice. I thought that was fast till I saw those times.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"uh huh"
Just die already. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even the Mario speedrun was more interesting than this. And that sucked!
- LoneStar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0-------...................--------------My personal best is 30 seconds -.-
- mcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm solving still one from 1990.
- punderful, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I solved world peace in 32 seconds - but the world wasn't too scrambled.
- mcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still solving one from 1990.
- mikexstudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a Caltech student I can point you to a few links:
Leyan Lo's site (the 20 yr old who set the new world record):
http://www.its.caltech.edu/~leyanlo/
There you can find a wmv of him solving a cube in 11.52 seconds.

- Toiling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0big deal?
- Wabem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news, I remember when this guy was on the Today Show....
- jdubya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think i could take all the stickers off and put them back on in 11 seconds.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to be honest, i've never solved one.... i give up once i imagine how hard it is without knowing how :)
- Pureblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew a guy who could do it about 35 secs. every time, ~1 min without looking. He tried to teach me, but failed miserably.
- DtectiveGFriday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhhh... whoa. And I though I was a nerd. I'm gonna have to go out and memorize about a thousand different algorithms and rubiks cube "strategy" just to rub it in all of my freinds faces that I have nothing better to do than waste my time with useless little things like this one. Maybe after everyone I know has started avoiding me, I'll go to the rubiks cube world championship, then they'll all see who really knows how to live, and who really is the coolest person in the world: THE RUBIKS CUBE WORLD CHAMPION IN 2006!
Be there or be normal! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no life. BTW, to have measurable results for a time, you would have to have it scrambled the same way every time. But if you did that, people could memorize how to do it. I wouldn't quite say that its the best system of measuring it
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do you decide on the algorithm? Do you look at the pattern once, and then just pick the correct algorithm and go from there?
- jeebwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obviously who ever posted this watched beauty and the geek2. I can time half the posts with something I see on tv
- daone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't think kids even still messed with rubiks cubes now a days. I guess thats why I never solved one because I wasn't concectrating on any alogarithims when messing with one.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of nerd joins the Rubik's Cube Club? Honestly, who does that?
- BlazinX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zomg, no vid, no digg.
- arctcifreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think rubiks cubes are hard...never solved one before...tried but couldnt...and im asian
