- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11he must have some good antivirus software
- Dispersion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7When I was a kid I read this X-Men comic where Cable and this other guy traveled back from the future to stop some mutant virus from happening. But in the end it broke out but the fix was to let Wolverine get infected and his MUTANT HEALING POWERS would cure it and they made the antivirus from his antibodies.
This guy is clearly a MUTANT with SUPER HEALING POWERS and possibly ADAMANTIUM CLAWS. I wouldn't trust him. - rk_cr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"He probably never had AIDS in the first place."
Not likely. The AIDS test is pretty comprehensive. First, you take a highly sensitive test - so sensitive it will detect any sign of it at all, but can also give false positives. However, this test is fast (20 minutes) and at least gives an indication of required further testing. If you pass the first test, you then do a more comprehensive test that'll take longer for the results to come back.
So, the chances of the first test being a false positive is pretty unlikely. - daviddrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This was probably a false positive. I strongly recommend you read the book Reckoning With Risk by Gerd Gigerenzer. False positives occur in about 2 / 10,000 tests. They can be caused by medical conditions as well as human error. There is no medical test that will *never* generate some false positives.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's actually a known case of one man who is completely immune to AIDS. He was in San Francisco for the beginning of the epidemic, and he had hundreds of sex partners, many of whom died. He was okay. So researchers tested him, and found out he had a genetic mutation. The same mutation that the residents of a village in Britain had that spared them from the Plague in 1665. Incredible story.

I'm pleased you found cures for STDs, but if the guy upstairs gave you AIDS or HIV, I seriously suggest moving apartment! - Biohacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Controlling HIV infection and curing the disease are two different things. There are many people who have been infected 5-10 even 20 years ago and live with very low HIV in their body. These individuals who are called HIV-controllers or Long term non-progressors (to AIDS) are not under therapy yet their immune system or because of other genetic factors are able to suppress HIV replication to very low levels. It is of great interest for researches to figure out how these people control the infection for obvious reasons.
Suppressing HIV does not mean the virus is eliminated, even if it is undetectable so called latent-virus (integrated into cell genome living dormant) can be activated at some point. This is the main reason why the immune system or drugs are not able to completely eradicate the virus from your body.
In this case it would be very important to determine if virus can be detected using ultra-sensitive techniques that can detect down to 50 copies of virus per ml of blood. It would also be important to monitor this individual over long-period (perhaps several years) with periodic testings to see if any virus "Blips" can be detected. There are also other methods to determine if the virus is hiding in his cells in dormant form. It is not possible to claim that virus is eliminated completely without these vigorous tests.
Also to clarify, HIV is the name of the virus that causes a disease syndrome called AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). You can be infected with HIV and not have any symptoms of AIDS, which is caused by declining numbers of immune system cells called T cells. Once you have AIDS you have to be on therapy, which greatly lowers the viral replication and allows your immune system to recover. A person may be completed for AIDS and walk around as healthy person but that does not mean he is cured of HIV infection. - stanleyfresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3....aaaaand TIME. Took 32 comments before there was a wolverine joke :P
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The point is his body killed the HIV visus without any medication, This is a first (recorded)..
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The man is clearly an alien.
- stranflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of a story that was dugg before. About the mouse that immune to cancer. They'd try to inject the guy and the cancer cells would just die. In other mice that had cancer, they'd inject some of this mouse's cells and it would cure the mouse. This gave some hope to scientists that there would be people out there that could do the same thing.
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Cancer_Cured_(in_mice) - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something fishy here.
HIV tests indicate the presence of HIV antibodies. If his body healed an HIV infection, antibodies should still be present in his blood for the rest of his life. The vanishing antibodies strongly suggests an error in the testing and reporting process, but even if that is not the case, it does not mean the virus is also absent. He should let the doctors investigate for an actual viral load with more testing. No doubt he fears they will make a vaccine from his body and not give him a cut of the profits, and he'd be right. - NGNR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2antron:
You might be right there, it could be a wrong initial diagnosis.
Lets not hope so, a step closer towards a cure is still better than nothing. - mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm...I checked out the video and yeah, it does contradict what's written, saying he'd happily submit to tests for research. Maybe he can sue the news for getting everyone to think he's an ass, LOL.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cured myself of AIDS 3 times. It's not hard you have to have a lvl 45 alchemist though.
- pseudomancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IAMNAD (i am not a doctor) but...
Just a little knowledge for some that don't seem to get it. You don't "get" AIDS, you 'get' HIV and then you Acquire...
First you contract the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (like it sounds, it is a virus that infects your t-cells, beginning a vicious outbreak that will eventually corrupt practically every t-cell in your body).
When your T-Cell count gets to a certain low point you have 'Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome' although that could read less like a 3 word noun and more like a condition, because it is. Sometimes after the body has AIDS the t-cell count goes back up and that person is told they are only HIV+, this is not the most correct in terminology because the person always had HIV even when they had AIDS. Really what has happened is that they are no longer completely deficient so therefore they are no longer in 'syndrome.'
And as we all know, Google will have all the other details and in-depth analysis that I don't feel like posting. - Jutral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Refuted and corrected by:

Despite the story being mentioned on diggnation, looks like the doctors made a small mistake. - leetsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The man was only HIV-positive. He didn't have AIDS yet.
HIV tests are very different from AIDS tests. HIV tests may have false positives.
Correct me if I'm wrong. - cormster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard about some hookers who were immune to HIV in guatemala or somewhere like that, would have been exposed to the thing lots of times.
How come what one was never followed up? - DemiGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree with biohacker. To add to his comments I would like to say that, there were reports of various people with different reaction abnormal reaction to the HIV virus (notice the dates):

It's nothing new. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He's a scum bag looking for attention "I would do anything to help find a cure" then refuses tests.. I understand that tests can be invasive and aggravating but GIVE ME A BREAK!!! IT COULD HELP CURE HIV!!!
- TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just glad the link goes to a BBC site instead of some supermarket tabloid type "news" source like so many other science stories.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Video? What video? Did you find it on a different page?
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what an *****. if he really did cured himself of HIV, he should work with doctors to find a cure. i am sure they are more than likely to pay him for furthur testing. people these days... when they are dying, they are desperate for help but when they are healthy, they refuse to.
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy needs to step up to the plate for the rest of the world. Like everyone else making the same comment, I realize he's got his rights, but who the hell wouldn't undergo a series of (I imagine) non-invasive tests for the good of HUMANITY.
Honestly, what a prick. - talean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is shoddy reporting. The text says he has refused further testing yet if you watch the associated video, they say he only received final confirmation of the results last month and will "happily submit to further tests and do what he can to assist research".
- Shadowsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope he is the key....

YOU DON'T HAVE AIDS
YOU'VE NOOOO LONGER HAVE THE AIDS............. - Poon007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that he probably never had AIDS. BUT...and this is a big but....If he did truly have AIDS and does not offer to have some tests done to find out how, why, or what cured him...then he is the WORST piece of crap on the planet...People could really benefit from anything he can do. I think that he has the ability to be a hero to the entire world, but at this point he is choosing to be a total DICK.
I say he should take the tests to help save the world or he should get AIDS again and suffer like the rest and die.
WOW...that was harsh...but true...people need help. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey I'm a circumcised man I have a pretty low chance of getting AIDS period, ask your doctor for the truth like I did.
- quackdoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was expecting some serious discussion here but not the juveniles typing out their "ideas"
A genetic mutation does confer resistance. The initial port of entry of the virus is blocked.
How could this man "cure" of himself? The media hasn't reported well and I have my doubts. At best the virus may have been lying dormant. At times the immune system is overwhelmed. Nothing more is known at this moment.
Frankly, there is a documented case of some people in South Africa who were immune to the same.
Simple rule of the thumb. Dont think that unprotected sex would not lead to AIDS or you can cure yourself spontaneously. I am writing in to that effect to warn you all. Specially those who arent aware of it. - oZzmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disease is a method of animal population control. We are trying to circumvent a force of nature here. Curing AIDS obviously won't be easy, how could someone be so selfish to believe that they are above contribution.
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quote:
"Why the hell isn't he going through more tests? If it could help find a cure/vaccine, then why is he being such a dick?"
Since there are no scientific studies that causally link a positive test for HIV with the development of the collection of infections and symptoms associated with AIDS, there isn't much scientific point in him wasting his time helping medical researchers earn their living with an endless series of tests.
"Mr Stimpson told the News of the World and Mail on Sunday that he became depressed and suicidal after being told he was HIV-positive but remained well and did not require medication."
As have legions of other people, some of whom I know.
Summary for those who don't study:
AIDS is not a "disease." It is a syndrome --a collection of symptoms that varies widely, none of which are exclusive to AIDS.
"Testing positive for HIV" has never been scientifically proved to cause any particular symptoms, and in many cases it never does produce any symptoms. - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have AIDS.
Yes, you have AIDS.
I hate to tell you, boy, you have AIDS.
You got the AIDS.
You may have caught it when you stuck that filthy needle in here.
Or maybe all that unprotected sex which we hear.
It isn’t clear, but what we’re certain of is that you have AIDS.
Yes, you have AIDS.
Not HIV, but full-blown AIDS.
Be sure that you see that this is not HIV, but full blown AIDS.
Not HIV, but full-blown AIDS.
I’m sorry, I wish it was something less serious, but it’s AIDS.
You’ve got the AIDS.
encore... - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's just great. We're on the virge of a cure for AIDS and here comes the bird flu to do us all in.

- wildjohn999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are the stories about "Man's body cured itself of Cancer/Heart Disease/Tuberculosis/Malaria"?
Each of these non-politicized diseases have killed more people than AIDS. - rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude...go for those extra investigations...help make HIV history!
- whiffen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be great if NHS can test his CCR5 gene status. Also, need to be wary of "sanctuaries" within the body such as the CNS system and possibly subsets of dendritic cells where the virus can remain "dormant". Nevertheless, this is a very interesting case and hopefully can offer some clues as to the immune- regulation of HIV.
- secretivecoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bush: Strap him down like a rab rat and find the cure!
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 "Healthcare NHS Trust confirmed the tests were accurate.." The NHS is a complete ***** up.
This guy is pretty pathetic, he sells his own story to the tabloids yet won't go in for more testing to help scientist find a treatment for HIV - mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a complete ass. He seeks compensation because he feels he somehow got screwed, then he refuses to help with research. Something tells me if they offered enough $$$$, the little prick would do it. I say screw that and make him into a lab rat against his will.
- Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why the hell isn't he going through more tests? If it could help find a cure/vaccine, then why is he being such a dick? Cause, it's just one of the most serious problems in world health today...
