Man requires 6500 calories a day to sustain weight
msnbc.msn.com — If only we were all like this: Due to a stomach condition, a 22-year old man from Idaho needs to eat over 6500 calories to keep his weight barely over 100 pounds.

- ictoan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6sometimes calories are not portional to the amount of food you eat. food can be small but still maintain high calories. So uhm, he probably ***** the same as everyone else. And if he does go to the bathroom more, who cares!
Personally, this guy is pretty cool to still be optimistic and make his life as normal as possible with all these health problems he have. - SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for those interested in LEARNING something: http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/pyloric_stenosis.html

- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Yep. Some people just are stupid. Apparently athlonmj doesn't understand the concept of being dangerously underweight. "If only we were all like this?" Here's an idea, instead of stuffing your faces with McDonald's everyday, try getting out and exercising a bit.

Oh, good advice. "Become a lazy slob." Why aren't you a doctor? Obviously you also missed the part that notes his STOMACH CONDITION. Some people also have a fast metabolism, which, even without exercising, causes them to have to eat more than the average Joe. - mglukhovsky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@draegloth: He needs to eat 6500 calories per day. As The_Wallbanger pointed out, if he doesn't watch where those calories come from he could get a heart attack, or high blood pressure/cholesterol. Exercising/riding a bike helps keep that at bay, or in all he wouldn't live past the age of 40.
- draegloth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah, yeah... just seems that burning all those extra calories working out and bike riding daily is just going to increase the amount he'll need to consume. I understand that this is a stomach condition, and that his quality of life is already impacted. I suppose adding the 4-500 extra calories he might be burning with all that activity is really not all that much in the grand scheme.. that's like half a BK breakfast sandwich..
- diggtard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not clear on whether he isn't absorbing the food from the digestive track or he just has an incredibly high metabolism. If it's the latter wouldn't that mean that all the fats and other crap associated with so many calories a day are passing through is arteries?? .....
- bennop, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0"Some people also have a fast metabolism, which, even without exercising, causes them to have to eat more than the average Joe."
This is about as common as the overweight people who say they have a slow metabolism. Its rare...super dam rare. Most fatties just eat too much and move too little, and most skinnies are just the opposite. This guy sounds like he has a stomach condition that impairs his ability to eat absorb calories...and he also screws things up for himself by exercising way more than is necessary to maintain physical health. He should exercise less. Period. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bennop, varying metabolisms are not rare. I know quite a few people with such varying metabolisms that some have to keep drinking water and eating quite often to give themselves the energy to get through the day, and yet they don't put on a pound, whilst others eat nowhere near as much but their weight doesn't drop. From your term of references towards overweight people, I wouldn't be surprised if your ignorance is borne of a pride for the fact that you have it so easy.
- lysdexic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@draegloth:
His goal is to gain weight. Taking in protein and exercising builds lean muscle mass. Muscle mass weighs four times as much as fat. Therefore, the more muscle mass he puts on, the greater his weight will be. His eating and exercise plan is sound. - bennop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@Byteguerilla. I suspect you must either spend a lot of time in an Metabolic Disorder Clinic at a medical facility, or be too eager to accept peoples rationale for why they feel tired or can't lose weight. We all love to selectively remember what we don't eat and how difficult it is for our situation. Thankfully the laws of thermodynamics are pretty solid and don't mess around for many ppl, despite their protestations.
My own exercise history has been overweight for most of my life, and then it took 5 years to lose 20kgs. Now as a personal trainer, and previously as an individual who couldn't understand why weight wouldn't come off me, I recognize what I see to be the fundamental differences between fatties and skinnies. Hey, I stil call myself a fattie. Everyday I watch everything I eat and know how easy it is to shift the blame. Me, got it easy (over 5 years) ...narp. Ignorant and proud...thats open to debate IMO.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11He has to really watch what kind of foods those calories are coming from. If you eat twice the normal rate of high-cholesterol foods, you'd be asking for it. Probably dead with heart disease by age 35.
- Jeffeh, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2My diet consists of about 3000 calories a day and that is on a really good day when I have three full meals... this guy is just over the top...

- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24As a poor student and an athlete, I am having a hellova time affording the 3000+ calories a day that i need.
- DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Me too. I guess I eat a lot of peanut butter bread and drink protein shakes. What do you do?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12One word: Ramen
Has some nutritional value, right? :p - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17High calorie foods aren't expensive. Cook food with butter and butter up your toast (don't use margerine, it's unhealthy), avocados have LOTS of calories (50% more than bananas), brussels sprouts are very cheap and are packed with calories, yams are good, use whole wheat bread (healthier too), dried milk is excellent, most nuts (except chesnuts and pistachios), cream and cheddar cheese (cheese + eggs = nice), etc.
Just buy smart and you'll be fine. Look up prices, note them down. Go to the supermarket, find those items and check their prices and labels (if you can, ie. you can't with fruits). Then buy what's best. Mix it up once in a while so you don't get sick of eating the same crap.
And you can get protein powder, tastes like crap ("chocolate" my ass), but they're somewhat decent. - seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2If you took up smoking, you wouldn't have to eat so much, Fatty ;)
BTW: Lard is on the cheap ;) - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"If you took up smoking, you wouldn't have to eat so much, Fatty ;)"
Yeah, you're right... Hey, he should do Meth and Crack too! That'll really keep his weight down. - ErrandboyOfDoom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9In the alternative, this guy might consider smoking something to keep his appetite up.
- emacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DrEbola:
If your goal is to gain / maintain muscle mass you also need sufficient and quality rest to see the benefits of healthy food choices and a quality workout schedules. Without the rest, no amount of good foods and exercise will make you leaner and stronger in the long run. And, yes, limited amounts of carbs and monounsaturated fats should be part of your food selection too.

Don't buy products from California and don't support Digg as it's based in California. If California ever wanted to become its own nation, it can as it has the 7th largest economy in the world. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Something tells me having to eat 6,500 calories of food a day (and not having a heart attack after one year) would become a huge hassle after awhile.
For him, eating is probably a chore.- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When I was about 19 I weighed about 135 and ate around 4000 calories a day. Only after I increased my intake to around 6000 calories a day was I able to gain weight.
The weird thing is, back then I didn't care what kind of food it was, so most of it was super fatty (like a couple cans of corned beef hash a day). Strangely enough, I didn't get fat at all, and never have been. I can't keep weight on unless I lift weights like crazy, and when I stop, I lose the weight pretty quickly. At one point I was up to 195, and dropped down to 165 in only 3 months. Ate the same, just worked out less.
Eating a ton of healthy calories is expensive, and it's a pain in the ass. - billyboobs34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the exact same problem, I'm now trying the McDonald's diet with plenty of non-cardio exercise. One of my problems is that I can't eat a lot at once. Two double cheeseburgers and a medium coke when I'm in a hurry or if I have time I might get a large fry and large coke. At Burger King a triple whopper and king size coke fills me up. I have worked my ass off in the past four months to gain 20 lbs.
Weight gainer shakes didn't really help much and mainly put on fat which is not what is desired.. - subcodec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Weight gain is just like weight loss...it takes work. While I don't consider myself unhealthy, I am 5'10" and been a steady 135lbs for the last 10 years (I am now 31). My 2 biggest problems is that I don't eat often enough during a day (sometimes only one meal) and I am a smoker. For me to get where I would want (around 150-160lbs), I would have to quit smoking and would have to eat about 6 times a day (they would not have to be large meals). It would also be very helpful to exercise and do some weight training.
So why haven't I done it yet? One is that old habits are hard to break...Two is that I am healthy. I very rarely get sick and I only see a doctor for a regular examination once every 2 years. Why fix something that isn't broke?? Biggest thing for me is to just keep trying to quit smoking.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When I was about 19 I weighed about 135 and ate around 4000 calories a day. Only after I increased my intake to around 6000 calories a day was I able to gain weight.

Anyways, how does this relate to technology ^^- DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Folks, the only way this could be a GOOD thing is if you are looking for a way to lose weight without exercising--i.e. if you're lazy.
- anenokoji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I recently was bulking up for a bodybuilding show(not in the process of cutting) and I was eating about 8000 calories, I gained about 35 lbs in 3 months.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4If we were all like these, there would be a severe food shortage. Wasteful is not good.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I wouldn't call it wasteful when he needs that much to survive. Wasteful is us overweight Americans who eat that much just for the heck of it.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7No, it's wasteful. His body is SEVERELY inefficient. I can do everything he does ( just about ) with only about 2500 Calories. I'm almost 3x more efficient than he is.
- Galaxion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7elnerdo: So, what are you proposing... some sort of 'Final Solution' to clinically underweight people??
Wacko. - DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do you think there'd be a shortage? Any reasons here?
My thinking is that the demand for food would be higher, therefore the price would be higher, therefore farmers would have an incentive to increase their output more and, voila, MORE FOOD! - billyboobs34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ebola, farm outputs now are mainly government controlled. The government will buy crops even when there is no US demand.
- oce222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was training for a marathon earlier this year and I was consuming about 4000-5000 calories per day. All of that was disgusting dining hall food... but I was so hungry...
In terms of the heart attack comment, it's not how much you eat, it's what you eat. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If only we were all like this" < there would be massive deaths most likely, if you even bothered to read the article, it's actually quite serious and not a simple 'ferrari' metabolism.
- Badblake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It kind of sounds like the problem the guy had in the movie Thinner. Minus the whole gypsy curse thing.
- samk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It seems that every skinny guy tries to gain weight by eating protein, instead of carbohydrates. I suspect that's part of the problem.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3whatever!!! i've ALWAYS been skinny...until last november i was 145 pounds (and aight ALOT of carbs...ALOT) and couldn't gain weight. then i decided to do whatever it took to gain weight. now i eat/drink ALOT of protein and not that many carbs...and that combined with working out religiously since then...am finally up to 163 with 10% body fat. so lay off the skinny guys, because not everyone is the same, so somone might need protein to gain weight.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@samk
Of course, because we all know that it's you, not the people that actually HAVE the condition that are the expert. All of his doctors must be wrong. Thank you for helping out. I think I'll mail him your advice. - samk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry, I meant no offense.
But I think it's accurate to say that skinny guys want to gain muscle mass and not body fat. They don't appreciate that many "normal" guys can have over 15% body fat.
If you eat a lot of protein, you're not going to get the muscle mass without doing a huge amount of exercise, as you did. Most skinny guys don't do that. Instead, they just eat lots of meat and wonder why they don't gain weight. It's because they're on the Atkins diet. - tyrants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Protein is used for rebuilding muscle. So since he works out protein is good for him. Carbohydrates is quick energy, so since he bikes and basically lives this is good for him. I explained it in simple terms so you could understand.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2its all good samk....was just digg-trollin
lol - samk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0elnerdo,
"Of course, because we all know that it's you, not the people that actually HAVE the condition that are the expert. All of his doctors must be wrong. Thank you for helping out. I think I'll mail him your advice."
You're assuming he's even seen a doctor about this specific condition. There's no indication in the article that he has. He's seen a dietitian.
This guy doesn't know for sure why he's still skinny, and he hasn't yet solved the problem. So he's no expert.
And there's no indication that he's ever tried a high-carb diet.
So yeah, that'd be great if you could send him my suggestion. I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

PS. That comment was disgusting, I hope you rot in the deepest pits of the netherworld your religion believes in. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What a nice guy you are! Work on your math and reading skills, though. 6500 calories divided by 2000 calories per person is 3.5 people. Also, it clearly states in the arguement that he eats three times the amount of food of an average person.
- Nitro2985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1More like 3 people.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3oops, saw an extra zero in there. Still, starving people dont need 2000 calorie diets, a family of 4 or 5 can live off of what hes eating.
I wasnt really being serious, but consider that that guys food is tainted with the blood of 5 men. Still, its not really his fault people are starving and its hardly fair to blame him for that. - IanAction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Apparently you don't live in America, where the average person eats this much anyway.
- SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone read the F***ING article? It says that 5000 of the calories he "eats" are from PROTEIN SHAKES, it's not like he goes to a Chinese buffet for 6 hours you dip-*****! Cut the guy some slack! If you are so concerned about 5 starving people somewhere, get off your lazy ass and go feed them yourself!
From the Article: "He achieved that on a diet that included 5,000 calories a day in protein shakes."

- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know about the poster of this article, but I certainly wouldn't want to share this guy's condition. Almost everyone would like to be able to eat more without gaining weight, but we are talking like 5 or 6 thanksgiving suppers a day! Would you all really want to eat THAT much? You could also think of it as 10 McDonalds quarter pounders, or 6 jumbo plates from someplace like TGIF or Chili's. For someone who eats 1500 calories a day, eating 6000 is pretty unimaginable.
- smax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not that expensive..... just chug corn syrup.... mmmmm!
- k0w0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it sounds like he has a problem absorbing nutrients/calories, especially if he has a lot of ulcers. This would cause a lot of diarrhea and output for sure, as well as a lot of pain.. It's amazing that he can eat so much food with all the painful ulcers in his esophagus.
So no, no one should want this.- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya, I had one ulcer once, and it was no fun at all (I lost almost 1/4 of my bodyweight in 3 months from not eating).
- Galaxion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It's really nice to be in between this guy and 'normal' people ya know. Being able to eat anything one wants, a full diet, whilst keeping a constant weight of around 120lbs (for someone who's 5'9). I can eat doughnuts all day long if I so desire (although I wouldn't, it's rediculously unhealthy) and laugh at passing overweight people...
muahahaha. Mod me down then, to make up for ya'll pudgy inadequacies.- Writher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3When you hit 40, you're going to get a huge gut.

He either eats a lot of junk food or smokes pot to keep his appetite up. - bennop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sure you need to exercise to maintain basic health, but I don't think he is doing himself any favors by riding everywhere and working out 5 times a week. How about lift weights twice a week and walk 3 times a week and take a scooter everywhere else to do yourself a favor. I mean, he is just making it more difficult for himself by doing so much exercise.
Also, I wonder if he has loads of olive oil, or any pure vegie oil would be good . And as a previous poster said, avocadoes too.
Do the essentials to maintain health, other than that, think about your health with your head. Stop burning calories that you don't have too. - Books, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Two things:

Either he'll put on some crazy weight really fast, or have a really bad case of the greasey *****. Or both. - steve693, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ultimate irony. Check out those google ads on the right - - - -- - ->
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There is a guy I know who has a disorder that makes him grow too much muscle. He had to have some kind of brain surgery to help him with it. He can eat hardly any protein, and if he does his muscles will become debilitating.
Combine that with the disorder that makes it so you don't feel pain and you got a super man. Neurology is an amazing field. - XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had pyloric stenosis too, it is the thickening of the tissue and is generally corrected by cutting the tissue away. Although I wasn't aware it caused any long term issues I ate like a horse and was stuck at nearly 6' 150lb for quite a while (I was known as the bottomless pit).
I too could sink like a rock in the pool. Very cool trick, lay flat on your back motionless, really freaks people out. Can't do that anymore...
Unfortunately middle age struck as I suspect it will for him, and I have to work with diet and exercise to keep from gaining 5lbs every year (mostly unsuccessful).- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+06 feet tall and 160 is really not that skinny. You are square in the middle of the BMI index for NORMAL. (You are actually EXACTLY in the middle.)
- pyrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Finally! A practical use for the culinary atrocity known as the Hungry Man Big Breakfast! http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/0744/

- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's scary only 120 and 6"? You must be freaking skin and bones because I'm 6'1 and 160 lbs.
- codyph55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"wish we were all like that" no man be clad your normal, at first glace you might think that this is cool, but ut us disabaling, even eathing that much he is still scrawny as hell, think about it...
- Qtip42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That must cost a lot to keep him fed. Good thing he works at WinCo.
- koshak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"If only we were all like this"? You want a REALLY terrible medical condiiton? Does not sound like something fun to me.
Maybe if you want to eat more, you can sometimes get away from the computer, walk up the stairs that lead out of mommy's basement, and actually do something that invovled EXERCISE! - mockamonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, that would be awesome. Makes those buffets worth it

- airship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interestingly enough, I also have to consume 6500 calories a day to maintain my weight: 450 lbs.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are the 6,500 calories you eat spoon fed to you while in bed through meals consisting mostly of lard? If so then you sir would be my hero!
