Man-made molecules reverse liver cirrhosis in rats
reuters.com — Scientists in Japan have designed artificial molecules that when used with rats successfully reversed liver cirrhosis, a serious chronic disease in humans that until now can only be cured by transplants. Cirrhosi...

- hendriks, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5No no, this is not an Aprils fool joke. Some google-mining shows that this has been published about in peer-reviewed papers by the Sapporo Medical Unversity in Japan. See here http://lib.bioinfo.pl/pmid:18028137

New strategy for the antifibrotic therapy with oral administration of FR260330 (a selective inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitor) in rat experimental liver cirrhosis.
Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity is significantly elevated in viral hepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis, and cholestasis. However, there are few reports on the relationship between iNOS and cirrhosis. Here, we investigated the effects of a new iNOS inhibitor that has been developed for oral administration in an experimental rat liver cirrhosis model. A cirrhotic rat model was developed by long-term administration of thioacetamide injections. FR260330 is a new, rationally designed, selective iNOS inhibitor that can be administered orally. After 12 weeks of treatment with FR260330, the rats showed inhibition of progressions of cirrhosis, ascites, and splenomegaly as well as a significant reduction in the proportions of connective tissue in the liver. The expression of nitrotyrosine, which indicates the existence of peroxynitrite and nuclear factor-kappaB activation, was remarkably decreased in the FR260330 treatment group. In addition, immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses showed that the expression of transforming growth factor-beta1 was remarkably decreased in this group. The present study demonstrates that FR260330 reduces liver fibrosis by the inhibition of transforming growth factor-beta1 and retards the development of cirrhosis. This oral iNOS inhibitor will be a new strategy for the treatment of cirrhosis.- emmeron, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2And that makes me think "geez, how can anyone drink enough Sapporo to get liver problems? It's freakin' soy sauce in a can!"

- stavrogin2, on 04/01/2008, -0/+4They've cured cirrhosis, not stupidity. She'll die in a drunken driving accident sooner or later.
- jeremyduffy, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2I am so happy that medical science is starting to make leaps forward. I could use a few part upgrades.
- clyde2801, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3Hmm...wonder if I should share about this in my AA meeting?
- Sh0rtcake, on 04/01/2008, -2/+1STOP MESSING WITH NATURE! we're all going to be bionic before our race dies. wait-- it won't die! everyone will be bionic! but seriously, folks. it's not cool to ***** around with nature. it was here before us, and it will be here after us. mother nature always wins. let's just live and breathe and work and die. you can't prevent inevitability. and even if there is a 5-year study that proves otherwise, you SHOULDN'T TRY to. humans may be the smartest animals in the world, but we are the DUMBEST animals in the world. we don't learn, we don't listen, and we are dumb. DUMB dumb.
- Denneval, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Helping with a medical condition is not creating a bionic world - it is helping people live longer... and not by 100s of years, but longer than the American lifespan.
- highlyhigh, on 04/02/2008, -0/+0dumb including you, shortcake.
- neicull, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0awesome. easily going to be a topic at happy hour this evening.
- oldcyborg, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1I hope they can get it straight for humans before I die of liver disease.....know what I mean, vern?
