- hondaman, on 07/10/2009, -0/+32For some reason I had always thought they were put together in more of an assembly line fashion. I didn't realize that every single one is essentially hand-built.
- TwistyMcFister, on 07/10/2009, -2/+24needs more diggerydoo.......
- directedition, on 07/10/2009, -0/+17Well it's not like they're aiming for a fighter jet in every garage (an initiative I wouldn't oppose). According to wikipedia they cost $29–57 million a piece to build.
- RAAFStupot, on 07/10/2009, -0/+17No, American plant (in St. Louis I believe).
I'm guessing it's the first completed airframe of the RAAF's purchase of F/A-18 E's that will be used to plug the gap between retirement of F-111's and introduction of F-35's.
I imagine this video is something like a publicity exercise for Australian politicians and journos - hence the RAAF roundels displayed in the factory. (This is what the taxpayers' hard-earned is going towards).
I thought the interesting thing about the video was that the production sequence seemed to be pretty much the same as if you were building a 1:48 plastic kit. - SPANKMONKEY, on 07/10/2009, -0/+14OK, ALL DONE. WAIT THERE ARE TWO EXTRA SCREWS.... FML
- fascistpig, on 07/10/2009, -0/+14I used to work at a Northrop Grumman plant in El Segundo where they were building them there and I swear it was like watching grass grow compared to this video.
- smithfly114, on 07/10/2009, -0/+12...until you saw a cockpit and wings.
- haidalangara, on 07/10/2009, -2/+12im a 20 year hold engineering student....building machines like these are my dream...great vid :-)
- ptoomey, on 07/10/2009, -0/+10Uhh, they give some extras in the pack in case you lose some right? We're probably fine, let the pilot figure it out.
- smithfly114, on 07/10/2009, -1/+10that is a lot of work!
- decker12, on 07/10/2009, -2/+11Fun fact: A Super Hornet costs MORE than three thousand dollars!
- fascistpig, on 07/10/2009, -0/+7My favorite memory of a NG employee was an engineer who put in a support ticket because his printer wasn't printing after he replaced the toner. I walked over to the printer, pulled out the toner and yanked out the orange tab with the plastic thing that kept the toner from hitting the drum.
- taokr, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6I think a better ending would've been to show that plane make its first flight.
- Bluemanz, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5It wouldn't really be possible to build these on an assembly line anyway, since the need for precision is so high. Imagine trying to construct Formula 1 cars or space shuttles on an assembly line. Pretty much the same deal.
- jasdf, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5The Chinese already have a fairly advanced aircraft manufacturing capability.
- Soriven, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5Sex can wait!
- directedition, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Ahh yes, Northop Grumman. Most notable for not being the world's largest producer of superfund sites (such an honor is bestowed upon Boeing).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Superfund_sites. ... - Hey, New Jersey, WTF man?
My ex-girlfriend works for NG upgrading electronic systems in fighter aircraft. It's just not fair. Why does SHE get to play with jets and I don't? :( Though it would be a short-lived job if I had it, as I'd spend all day sitting in the cockpit making machine gun and explosion noises. - jptkts, on 07/10/2009, -1/+6Pssh, Tony Stark could have built this overnight
- ptoomey, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5They don't need the video, they have at least one and probably several people in that factory on their payroll. I'm sure they had the detailed plans before the first one was built. The Russians did that to us for many years.
- wc3452, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5I dunno, I think "Boeing" would have tipped you off there.
- bromac, on 07/10/2009, -2/+7I heard it was more than 9000.
- ASSASSYN360, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4...they never turned out the lights.
- acitodg, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5That is very cool.
- beepthegeek, on 07/10/2009, -3/+6i m lovin it.
- EMsean, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4I wonder how many of the builders are actual engineers? Seems like their analogs at the Ford plant are laborers with a GED, but this looks like a bit more advanced.
- MtheoryX, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Aircraft model recognition fail.
- sanosuke001, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3My brother works with the F-18E/F's on the USS Eisenhower. They are badass. Took a family day cruise on the Ike last summer and they did some touch and go's, traps, and some flybys. An F-18 500 feet above you breaking the sound barrier is surreal...
- Mtbeaver, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3liar
- ThanatosST, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3in a cave with a box of scraps, nonetheless.
- ophello, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Pretty amazing. I'd like to see the same process for a commercial airliner, too.
- mstrebe, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3And to think, it only takes a few seconds to destroy one.
- SamSks, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Was this an Australian plant that was making it? Or, why did the video start with "Australia ..."
- uthallan, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I think those were some sort of plastic covering, idk tho...
- STPZ, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2pew pew pew
- Grimee, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Yes. I work for Boeing here in St. Louis and this is exactly where that plane was made. We also make the F-15 here in St. Louis.
- SnazzyTime, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3operation cwal that *****.
- BoneheadFarker, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I don't pass on spam.

- jasdf, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Exactly.
- helmsb, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2The video title Constructing A Super Hornet: "A time lapse of the construction of a Super Hornet" is courtesy of the department of redundancy department
- Gregbertt, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Wicked awesome.
- haidalangara, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1no it cant.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1More like 200k but the dev costs and plant hardware are rather high.
- Raptor007, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Did they repaint the nosecone several times? It seemed to go white, red, white, red, white. Watch 2:45 to 2:55.
- jtorkbob, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1***** at 2:21
- firebhaal, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1really cool video....mesmerizing
- downwithpeople, on 07/10/2009, -2/+2Welcome to the 21st Century, you may still be experiencing a sense of delusion due to the unfreezing process.
- doich, on 07/11/2009, -0/+0I'm a big fan of the rusty tricycle that makes random appearances throughout the video.
