- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow... now the next time i am in the wilderness in the middle of winter without matches and need some fire, i will be sure to go and build an apparatus to freeze ice without air bubbles in it then carve a sphere out of it... hehe pardon my sarcasm but really how plausible is this? thought i admit i do want a big sphere of ice...
- pr0t3st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This rocks! Awesome digg
- digitalhair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1novel application of a technique originally devoloped for burning polar bears' eyes while under attack. this is much more practical.
next concept: peanut butter for my butt. - gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seen it before.. but good digg anyway... up there with using a chocolate bar and a pop can to start a fire.
- grizwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great digg ... everyone should see this, you never know when this may save your life
- dotmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This isn't really making fire with ice.. it's more using ice to magnify the sun and then using the sun to make fire. There's nothing amazing about that."
All energy comes from the sun... When you use a cigarette lighter, you're burning butane gas, which was extracted from oil, which was produced over millions of years from compacted plants, which produced their energy by photosynthesizing ... the sun. - nashdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I swear that was my 5th grade (late 80's)science project...of course my ice lens never actually set anything on fire...but damn it my goal was proof of concept.
- Al3xander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quite cool,
dugg just for the hell of it - digitalhair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0j/k. I love this kind of stuff. I digg it.
- tendomann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great story....brings back memories... :)
- psyched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm an avid camper and outdooresy type of person. I know this will come in handy one day. A dig for you :D
- modularsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You'd have more luck rubbing two sticks together. Or just taking a lighter in a plastic bag with you. Interesting read, but this really isn't plausible for survival purposes unless you're McGuiver, in which case you can form a perfect ice sphere with your ungloved hands out of a snowball.
- sock2828, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool i like stuff like this
- mykrowsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I learned this from the movie Fargo.
- jbauer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also seen in the movie "The Edge". Well, not seen, but talked about.
- pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i go camping, and i always take a lighter, but just knowing this, i think it would be neat to try. great digg.
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's really cool! Great digg.
- oh_em_bree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0agreed, it was The Edge. and this is the correct way to spell MacGuyver. I mean hello? he can make a gun out of a paper clip, a rubberband, and a drinking straw.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice digg.
- GS13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Real cool digg.
- Udon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First aluminum (coke and chocolate), now ice... what's next... ...glass?
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know they menitioned it in the edge but did they actually do it in Fargo? I don't remember. He should put up some video just to prove this isn't a hoax.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're going camping, don't bring a big sphere of ice. Instead, just bring a lighter.
- winifredxu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0hi everyone:
This is a great article, with nice pictures.
But I also found this article, which is a much easier way of lighting fire w/ just water and a piece of saran wrap.

But carving ice is cool and artsey... =) - FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This isn't really making fire with ice.. it's more using ice to magnify the sun and then using the sun to make fire. There's nothing amazing about that.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I learned this while camping. Rather fun, but the stone thing works better.
- raziel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about this... typically when your outside and there is ice the sun is not all that strong. Your only chance would be to do this around 12-2PM EST for the sun to even be strong enough to burn something. Ive used magnifying glasses before and had little luck mid day.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perfect way to kill some ants, if only they were out during the winter.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, seriously cool
- zorbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What deep rooted insecurities do you have that allow your stupidity to support your opinions? I hope when you turn off your computer you go outside and die a cold miserable death while trying to rub two sticks together. You have obviously never tried to use a lighter in extremely cold and/or damp conditions. A magnifying glass, not a lighter in a plastic bag, saved my life once. And if for some reason I loose my magnifying glass I will be back here again to write about it.
- cosmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0with my luck i'd get the tender going and my lens would drip and put my fire out
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet digg.
- wiredclimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good dig
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this article is en fuego
- mykrowsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quote --"Are you sure it was Fargo? It may have been, but it was also in the movie The Edge with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins."
my bad, you are correct sir. - dotmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just the thing to warm up on a cold winter night.
Oh, wait a minute! - engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1same site as had the make fire from a piece of chocolate and a pop can
- kitty_scar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0KOOL!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this article. - MajorRodgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you don't like this article then you probably have lived in some city all your life, believing things like "food comes from the supermarket".
This has the possibility of coming in very handy when out in the woods during winter. - abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool
- zorbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's hard to pardon your sarcasm. Do you know how to read? Do you have eyes with which you can see? Do you think the photos were doctored using some photo editing software? If you'd get off the computer and go outside once in a while you might actually do something productive like make an ice sphere that you so badly desire.
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wow this is really usefull, and to think all these years that I've been using a lighter.
No digg - fozzcorp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I thought the article was a tip for survival, but... Of course your going to bring matches or a lighter for camping if you plan it. Duh. So many dumbass people, like OMG use a lighter N00b. They must not be able to read.

What is Digg?
