MRI Scans of My Brain (PICS)
flickr.com — I need to do this. We once were at the Enchanted Broccoli Forest at Stanford University drinking Full Sail that a stranger offered us out of a keg, and then another stranger gave us bong hits, and we walked down the halls and the students in the dorm had the coolest ***** on their doors. Brain Scans and more brain scans is what i remember. Ahh.

- synystar, on 08/22/2008, -0/+23The mucus retention cyst? Nothing to worry about, they're very common. I know that because I'm an expert....at using Google.
I also learned that it damn well better not be a mucoceles, as some doctors mistakenly call them. Those are little fluid filled sacs that slowly fill up with mucus and then expand slowly-- pushing, compressing, eroding bone and moving structures around them. These mucoceles may expand and push into the eye socket (the orbit) or push into the brain or nose. That's a bit ***** up.- crazyjake, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8*citation needed
- synystar, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5"Now there is a terminology problem around mucoceles. Some doctors call “cysts” in the sinuses “mucoceles”, when in fact they are just cysts. So, as a patient, it is important to know the difference between a “mucus retention cyst” and a mucocele. A mucus retention cyst is just a cyst along the sinus lining. It’s a fluid filled sac, yes, but a retention cyst does not expand and push into the eye socket, brain, or nose and it doesn’t cause problems in the vast majority of cases. So a cyst is very different than a mucocele." http://sinus411.org/4%20surgical%20treatment%20pag ...
I'm not a doctor and I must admit that the website I'm citing doesn't look like it was created by someone who knows how to design web sites. But that's not uncommon for intellectuals. It sounds like whoever wrote that knows what they are talking about. Of course, whoever wrote that could be completely wrong. But it's late and I'm not concerned so I won't bother researching it myself.

- ZackScott, on 08/21/2008, -4/+13This is great. For far too long has humanity not been in the world of the brain. Only recently have we begun unraveling it. Still, it is not enough, and each progression will be marked. What I loved about these photos is that it shows what access we have today. Someone (a random guy) and his brain all up in photos via MRI.
A technical wizardry was truly at the works here. And what would we do in a world without education? Can you imagine one day in which we can image the brain down to details in which we can track thoughts? Is it a scary world? It depends on who is imagining? We can see the pulses of the brainjuice sending electrifying messages between the manifolds, and yet we can not yet assemble them onto an LCD like our brain can put together in thoughts. But one day...wow...- Nboy514, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4"brainjuice sending electrifying messages between the manifolds" Love it. lol
/Neuroscientist - jimmiss, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Some philosophers and physicists think that by definition the human brain cannot fully understand itself. I think we will stumble upon AI long before we understand it. Maybe we we have to get it to explain consciousness to us.
- travis1982, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Actually I think the brain is well understood today. I'm a 5th year psych masters student, and I can tell you that there really arn't many areas of the brain that is not fully understood. Each section/part of the brain has a very specific purpose...the illusion of consciousness is in really just brain functions and neurotransmitters reacting together. I don't buy the dualism ideology that many philosophers have....happyness, sadness, all emotions can be turned off or on with drugs or removal of that part of the brain. In fact, the same person can have a completely different personality if brain damage occurs. I don't think there is a religious neuroscientist/psychologist alive today after realizing all this.

- ajimmykid, on 08/22/2008, -0/+6uh.. actually as a college student (undergrad or grad), you can sign up for fMRI studies and you actually get paid to do them. as a freebie, they send you photos of your brain. it's actually really easy, and you get paid about $30/hr
I'm also a student at Stanford, and I just did one last night.

It supposedly symbolizes your third eye, AKA the Pineal gland.- joegibes, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1Well, what do you know, it does! Too bad the pineal gland has nothing to do with anything remotely related to vision.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineal_gland- sycx1, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Are you ignorant of the true dimensions of vision? Are you ignorant of the powerful visions the meddling of the pineal gland can produce?
Go drop acid please. - cheechman85, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Maybe you should read the article you site:
Miscellaneous anatomy
Pinealocytes in many non-mammalian vertebrates have a strong resemblance to the photoreceptor cells of the eye. Some evolutionary biologists believe that the vertebrate pineal cells share a common evolutionary ancestor with retinal cells.[6]
In some vertebrates, exposure of the pineal to light can directly set off a chain reaction of enzymatic events which regulate circadian rhythms.[7] In humans and other mammals, this function is served by the retinohypothalamic system that sets the rhythm within the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Cultural and social interactions produce exposures to artificial light that influence the setting of the suprachiasmatic clock.
Some early vertebrate fossil skulls have a pineal foramen. This corroborates with the physiology of the modern lamprey, tuatara, and some other vertebrates.

- Lunarbunny, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Nah, I got the really light end. Barely any cosmetic "issues," an occasional fibroma on one of my toenails, and I got seizures regularly starting at about 15 until I took meds; I got off of them last year and haven't had any since (but knock on wood). I've seen some pretty messed up people with TSC though, there was a girl at this one gathering who couldn't go more than a half hour without collapsing into a seizure.
