- kinerry, on 06/19/2009, -3/+11digital still uses an antenna you ***** *****
- KingHarvest00, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7humans are mammals
- bugmenottt, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5No surprises here. We expect designs to be duplicated. This is just further evidence that the human body was intelligently designed.
- JinnRikki, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5Seems kind of dumb to not model it after a bat's or a dog's ears since I'm pretty sure their hearing is superior to humans.
- Mejogid, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Self-referrentialism in digg comments... this seems slightly surreal...
- cubicledrone, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3"Even the best man-made designs are often outclassed by nature's own creations."
Interesting statement. - typicalusername, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2Radio nerds, unite!
- poitzort, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2This is a bunch of fluff and PR. The important part isn't that it mimics the cochlea. Many people (in EE as well) know how that works and using the concept isn't new. In fact the log-periodic dipole array antenna they have attached works in a similar fashion. The question is: how did they implement it in the IC, how accurate and how fast is it?
...none of which is mentioned in the article. It's a big mental masturbation fest of creating biologically inspired systems which isn't the interesting part since that's old hat.
Ohh I solved my own question:
"Inspired by the design, the MIT researchers created a "RF Cochlea" chip which acts as an analog spectrum analyzer"
In other words they put an analog spectrum analyzer on an IC... somehow. - publiclurker, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2But, he wrote that before breast implants were invented.
- Memnochxx, on 06/19/2009, -3/+5Ears are for hearing, I thought we all understood this.
- copypastry, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2"Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous."
-Leonardo da Vinci - Schmich, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Well that's nice to hear.
- seanoneil14, on 06/19/2009, -3/+4It's amazing how much of the human body we still don't understand
- greenlight2001, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1All the comments are from whiny bitches.
- Carlix, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Viva MIT.
- ennuisquared, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1They should've modeled it after a dog ear. More more sensitive.
- bstew22, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Correct.
- diggydougie, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I would be happy if they just provided a link to the actual press release or paper. Sometimes they do, but hardly ever nowadays. I'm guessing that the chip is simply constructed of a series of length tuned sections analogous to the way the log periodic antenna is constructed. Basically an array of tuned elements for narrow bands within the spectrum. And the processing integrates it all together. But I am only guessing and as you say it would be nice if the article would just lay it out for us. It's not like they are saving paper or anything. They could totally geek out at the end of the article and the non-technically inclined would just stop reading at that point.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Buried for not giving credit where credit is due...

- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -1/+1hey dumb Vinci, she's a He and His name is God.
K? - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -1/+1Nature PWNS science.
- apmtt, on 06/19/2009, -0/+0Well, this isn't an actual ear, it's a radio signal processor, so presumably they're just using some of the principles that the cochlea uses, not completely ripping it off. So it shouldn't really matter whose cochlea it is.
- GamerXR72, on 06/19/2009, -1/+0Don't all mammals have the same ear components?
An example of what I am talking about would be like comparing a standard police 9mm handgun to a Desert Eagle. They both have the same components, but one is obviously superior.
Im sure the science for all these ears is the same so studying one is just as good as another, is it not? - jeddyftb, on 06/19/2009, -3/+2Digg: yesterday's Engadget, today!
- Takfam, on 06/19/2009, -6/+3Apparently you haven't heard of these new things out. They're called "jokes" (maybe "johcs", I'm not certain on the spelling). Allegedly, they're used in this new concept called "humor." It's pretty recent research, I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it.
You ***** *****. - threat42, on 06/19/2009, -6/+1I was going to say... shouldn't it be modeled after a mammal's ear? To do it on the human ear is both narcissistic and short-sighted.
- Takfam, on 06/19/2009, -11/+4After all of that work on an antenna, they're going to be pissed when they hear everyone's switched over to digital.
