The enigma machine was used to encrypt... It could decrypt if you had the right code (yes, it was the same machine used to encrypt and decrypt).
It's stupid to say the machine couldn't decrypt... You can only say the allies never decrypted it. - rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Confirmed error on the decription, real message decripted:

well aside from 2/28 being tomorrow...looking at that pages shows that it in fact, DOES update. You are an idiot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is nice that it runs in the background so well. I'm running it on both cores of my iMac and there is no notible slowdown playing Unreal Tournament 2004 at full graphics.
- ph34rhk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The translation of the message is as follows:
Radio signal 1851/19/252: "F T 1132/19 contents: Forced to submerge during attack. Depth charges. Last enemy position 0830h AJ 9863, (course]) 220 degrees, (speed) 8 knots. (I am) following (the enemy). (Barometer) falls 14 mb, (wind) nor-nor-east, (force) 4, visibility 10 (nautical miles)." - CheesyPeteza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"2006-02-28 02:49:42 LISTSTAT: processed: 29720 rate: 4184 chunks per day remaining: 41260

OK perhaps I should have been clearer...Yes it's being updated, that pretty frikkin obvious (So obvious I didn't think there was any point mentioning it) What I'm saying is when something is posted on digg.com like this there's going to be a boom in people visiting the site and signing up. Therefore you'd expect the data to come in suddenly a lot faster.
When this site was first mentioned I read everything on that site and checked out the results, I was suprised not to see a spike in the results due to being on digg.com. I assumed it would perhaps take a while, but today with this dupe post I checked again and still no spike in results coming in...
The reason I noticed this because on the web site it says:
"The total search space consists of 7434 workunits. Based on the Celeron, 100 participants running the software 24/7 could walk through the search space in 4 days."
Which made me think, well with this being on digg.com I bet that it won't take long now... - tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm waiting for "Help, I'm a prisoner in an Enigma making factory"
- CheesyPeteza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This web site has had loads of attention over the last couple of days, why isn't the results page showing an increase in activity?
http://www.bytereef.org/m4-project-stats.txt - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's unusual--I've never seen a thread that could be considered Godwined before the first post. ;)

lol! =) - chillypepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 things do get lost in translation... http://www.tuaw.com/2006/02/27/congrats-to-winners-of-engadgets-wwjd-contest/

- stridey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm... too bad it wasn't something more interesting.
- shack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't the story from yesterday already contain the first decryption?
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dupe from yesterday

AHAHAHAHAHA - aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Setting it up to run on OS X is a piece of cake :-) I'm running it on my dual processor G4 tower and my PowerBook G4.
- sriracha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@CheesyPeteza
agreed. I wondered the same thing myself.
Has anyone actually gone through the code and complied it themselves and run the check-sums?
It would be quite funny if this was an elaborate hoax to get a bunch of know-it-all nerds to install a trojan on their machines.
It has all the markings of bs in the marketing, communications and the developers:
- calling people to rally some obscure goal that no one really cares about anyway
- encryption - which all techies seem to have a passing interest in and consider "sexy"
- "open source code"
- bad website layout
- services running on people's machines that communicate with the outside world where the user has no idea what's being sent
- app developers that seem to know something about encryption and security - perhaps quite a bit more than the users - joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Drink more Ovaltine"
