- immatellyouwhat, on 05/21/2009, -2/+8Jeans, always gotta have the right jeans.
- mofongo1, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5As the article indicates, it's from a health lifestyle as well as a good diet. This guy lived to be so old because he wasn't a fat ass sitting on the couch in front of the TV playing video games and eating chips, pizza, and soda. "daily biking" is the key here, but it can be any daily exercise as long as you get your heart rate up for an hour. That is one lesson we need to teach our children here in the States...
- TimtheTaxMan, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5Lack of stress is probably a big contributor. Living in a nice climate tending an orchard is probably as low stress as you can get. Nothing like fighting the IRS all day…ugh
- BaphClass, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4I'm hoping to make it just long enough to have my consciousness transferred over to some inorganic medium. I'd even be willing to wait another few decades while scientists perfect the mimicking of our more complex senses via electronics, and complete the construction of an artificial body. As long as my now-immortal mind is kept occupied via whatever incarnation the internet has chosen to take at that state, as well as at least some rudimentary form of human contact, I think I could avoid a sensory deprivation-induced bout of insanity.
- NiftyG, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4I suspect it's a little of both.
You can't control genes, but you can control lifestyle, so focus on that if you want to live longer. - Gruul, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4Make love every day and live long !
- Cyberdropping, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3Lifestyle or genes? Answer: Both.
- RonADiSH, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3usually its mostly genes
- askantik, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Nice adverbs you got there.
- sugablonde, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2""regular physical activity," emphasizes "abundant plant foods, fresh fruit as the typical daily dessert, olive oil as the principal source of fat, dairy products (principally cheese and yogurt), and fish and poultry consumed in low to moderate amounts, zero to four eggs consumed weekly, red meat consumed in low amounts, and wine consumed in low to moderate amounts". Total fat in this diet is 25% to 35% of calories, with saturated fat at 8% or less of calories.[3] The diet is often cited as beneficial for being low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat and dietary fiber." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_diet
- gamerbambi, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I guess it's a combination of both! My grandfather lived up to 104. He smoked for 28 years, drank all his life, never retired, and was known to be the happiest man alive in his neighborhood. I guess you have to balance life with good and bad to live up to 100.
This is why I eat healthy, get drunk, exercise, and smoke a black n' mild every now and then. :) - askantik, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Mountain biking with CamelBaks FTW.
- askantik, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Essentially the Mediterranean diet is where you eat mostly plant foods and just a f few animal foods, with the animal foods being a small amount of cheese and a little seafood.
- bkraj, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Tour de franzia?
- LucifersDad, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Genes and luck.
His genes could handle the environment he was in.
There are people who start smoking/drinking and in 10 to 15 years will be dead by cancer/liver problems.
Genes also control what lifestyle you choose. - Lionhart, on 05/21/2009, -1/+2Okay I know he had a "Mediterranean" diet but does anyone know the specifics?
- solid12345, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Loose-fitting is the key, can't clamp down on those hips and organs.
- MisterEThoughts, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Both. Moderation I believe.
- inactive, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Quality or Quantity, depends on what you prefer.
- ilithium, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Life is a bitch and then you die.
- Lionhart, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Missed the point. I know what a Mediterranean diet is, but it's not like he ate every food in it. I want to know specifically what his usual eating habits were. You could eat olive oil bread every day and be considered following a mediterranean diet.
- pingveno, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Genes.
- Foskey, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I need a mountain bike.
- nikegoal, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0so true on many levels, people should read & learn about how life can be lived
- Knowa22, on 05/21/2009, -2/+2Wow, it will be the year 2100 when I'm 114 years old!
- NiftyG, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0Personally, a quality life is also a healthy one. The guy in the article was still cycling at 102. Anyone who is a 102 and healthy enough to ride a bike has a pretty darn good quality of life.
- oleka, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0Seems laughable at first sight, but wait . . . it may happen
- shylove, on 05/21/2009, -1/+1He and his family have a big problem because some company is going to get a patent on his genome and they will never be themselves again!! They will be the property of greedy corporate
CEO's intent on making outrageous profit on their innermost secrets. - neillawson, on 05/21/2009, -2/+2YOU ARE 23! HAHAHAHAHA
