Language evolves in bursts

sciencenow.sciencemag.org — The idea that languages evolve in bursts, rather than gradually, isn't new. When applied to species, it's called punctuated evolution. Mustering up mathematical power, 5 scientists were to demonstrate the phenomenon in the evolution of human languages from the common words in three major language families.
