- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -1/+32Why do I have a nagging feeling all this talk about teleporation is simply to generate buzz for a Movie?
- clarkbp, on 02/23/2008, -2/+23 A quote from this article - "There's some imprecision in what we do, so one of the main challenges as far as using teleporting on a quantum computer is to be able to do it with much more precision much higher accuracy"
SEE: "The Fly"; (1986) - inactive, on 02/23/2008, -1/+17What good does it do to beam me halfway across the universe if it isn't actually me, but only an exact copy of me?
- xptweakerntn, on 02/23/2008, -0/+15It all started with a man named Tesla........
- Ghostalker, on 02/23/2008, -3/+14Can we PLEASE trade Hayden Christensen for Heath Ledger back?
- geoken, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10This quote was pretty awesome;
"To make a comparison between a quantum computer memory and a classical computer memory let's suppose you had a memory of 300 classical bits that could roughly store a line of text. If you had a quantum computer composed of rather 300 quantum bits it could store more information than a classical computer composed of all the matter in the universe." - TekTrixter, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9But then it couldn't be used as an excuse to remove our freedoms... or to make the rich even more wealthy (MIC)
- carpespasm, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8well you see, we send your mental pattern over to your quantum clone, freeze you/ stop your consciousness/ etc.... then when he (who is in practical purposes you) wants to come back, we re-sync you with his memories, and it's like you went there yourself, without the jet lag.
- oxdeltaxo, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8Personally, I prefer the method where they disintegrate you and and transmit your particles one at a time through a particle beam which re-assembles you on the other side.
- chrisduser, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6Who would want to use 'cut & paste' teleportation? The original person is deleted...
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -1/+7He can teleport data? whao coo... wait... isn't that like email, ftp and the Internet .etc?
- bcherup, on 02/23/2008, -1/+6youtube link? I ***** hate quicktime!
- ScienCentral, on 02/23/2008, -0/+5YouTube link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3nq6y9P1_yM
- Sabretou, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4Let's hope Local Teleport technology not based off of the Calabi-Yau model and the String Theory means that we won't have to use Xen and there will be no Resonance Cascade ever.
- FlameDonkey, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4Half-Life anyone?
- nickfartzone, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4Here's a Youtube link to the same video (looks like better quality):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nq6y9P1_yM - tgc1, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4I thought it was okay. Short and sweet.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4Life-forms, you tiny little life-forms, you precious little life-forms, where are you?
...sorry, wrong Data. - inactive, on 02/24/2008, -0/+3We need to talk to Dr Kleiner.
- Neoanarchist, on 02/23/2008, -1/+4Tek is right but damn 0x7F000000, that was harsh hahaha. Don't get me wrong, it was ***** hilarious though.
- greenawlives, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2Quicktime movies? Are you kidding me!
- searcade, on 02/23/2008, -1/+3Look if you cant give me "Jumper" powers don't create teleportation!
- Neoanarchist, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2Depends on your definition of substance...
- GeorgeStone2, on 02/23/2008, -1/+3Jumper was such a bad movie.
- BirdCatcher, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2like we need some bitch to tell us teleportation isn't real
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -0/+2The Middle East? I believe you mean our corrupt government, religious zealots and anyone who would impinge on our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
- Ramble, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1No, because your age and all problems associated with age (ageing, dying) would also be transported.
- JasonsLan, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1forget it dude, I have bigger ***** than paris. - substance is to Paris Hilton as Dry is to Water.
- Starhawk, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1That's how it's done in the novels ("Jumper" & "Reflex"); he makes a human-sized hole between the two locations that moves through him. Since when they test taping it they only get one frame of the 'hole' the connection of the two places exists for about 1/30th of a second. The movie seems to go about it a little bit different.
- carpespasm, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1maybe because that's just about all they talk about and the article has about as much substance as paris hilton?
- hulez, on 02/24/2008, -0/+1The concept of data being transfered from one place to another. i cant wait till they invent it. Maybe they can use this concept to invent the telephone or the internet but i think that will never happen because thats impossible.
- illspaz, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1also could be using the movie to generate buzz for themselves... works both ways
- GoatMonkey2112, on 02/23/2008, -1/+2I was wishing you could beam yourself too.
- FlameDonkey, on 02/24/2008, -0/+1It'll be forever before I see me some headcrabs.
- centran, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1I thought the jumper teleportation was done with "gateways". Kind of like the theory of using wormholes to transport matter.
The Star Trek telporter is quantum based and makes a copy of you then destroys the original. Even if quantum teleportation would work and we have the technology to do it there is a slight problem with energy. I amount of energy needed to teleport a human is beyond what we are capable of... well maybe if we linked several fission plants together we would have enough but I doubt those cities would appreciate the scientific achievement when they are in darkness for several hours. - thebusdriver, on 02/24/2008, -0/+1good, cause i ***** hate quicktime
- jemka, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1Whaddaya think? A fly. Am I becoming a hundred-and-eighty-five-pound fly? No, I'm becoming something that never existed before. I'm becoming... Brundlefly. Don't you think that's worth a Nobel Prize or two?
- chingy1788, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1Hiro is a super jumper
not only he can teleport but he can stop/slow/speedup time - zikzak, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1why do u teleport urself to another planet instead
- bluedemon31, on 02/23/2008, -1/+2Well what if I transport it into the body of someone younger...
Like the Snake guy does in Naruto. - inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1But the information isn't transmitted - if a copy of me is made at the other end, that my consciousness won't magically go into that copy - it'll be a separate entity, only with my exactly genetic makeup, memories, etc.
- dahlek, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1You aren't your atoms - you aren't the stuff you think you are made out of. You are the information that those atoms at any given time represent. Every atom in your body has already been replaced many times. Your body copies itself all the time, just in small increments. Got any scars? Not a single atom in that scar now was there when you got that scar. That scar is a carefully preserved _copy_. Teleportation would simply do this all at once. Your information is never lost, you never "die", etc.
- Blandyman, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1-1 for Naruto. Sorry :/
- IRQ1Conflict, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1So, they created an expensive 'fax' machine? Woopy.
- MaruLono, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1Fascinating! We seem to have developed a very slow teleport!
- Slimer, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1there is no spoon
- Slimer, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1because you're a nagger? (FTW?)
- Greenergrass, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1My own feelings in my twin sister overthere? no, I do want to be there.
- dahlek, on 02/24/2008, -0/+0But what is special about "your" particles? You think that electron number 4,374,387 in one of your kidney cells is somehow better than a random electron off in space? If you have no problem being "disintegrated", you ought to have no problem being just scanned instead. Your information is sent and you are re-assembled at the other end. The information ensures that the "new" particles are doing what they ought to be doing. Think of moving a LEGO castle from one room in your house to another. You could pick the entire thing up and move it all at once, or you could take it apart block by block and take those very blocks to the other room, OR, you could carefully record each kind of block and where it is and, using a new pile of LEGOS to reconstruct the castle using your data. All get you the same result, each has varying costs and data speeds and such associated with it, if we're talking about moving you around the planet in far future.
- dahlek, on 02/24/2008, -0/+0Greg Bear's Eon and Eternity books have that kind of technology. People make partial clones and send them off to do tasks - true multitasking you might say. When the partials are done, they return and sync.
