Did anyone else immediately think of the movie iRobot, when they read this article? Interesting stuff.

Well it makes sense computers evolve the same way organic stuff has, seeing as how they were created by the organic human. It would be pretty hard to throw together a new way for something to evolve if we've only seen 1 type of evolution.

Theres no way by 2010 their will be robots around to do simple chores. The thing that rolls around and bumps into walls while picking up dirt and other similar machines are all pretty stupid at the moment, and I don't see huge improvements in them by 2010.

Haven't Isaac Asimov and James Cameron showed you anything?? No way this ends good for humanity...

What ever, just tell me when we can sex with them. I am waiting for my Cherry 2000.

The concept of creating an artificial 'spirit', like the author mentions here annoys me. People fail to realize that their consciousness is merely the intersection of the senses and mental processes within the brain. All you could ever hope to do without transporting the matter itself is to make copies of your personality, which is hardly desirable.

We would have to assume this guy was correct in his predictions, and we all know how wrong we have been in the past about predicting our future. I mean, I'm still waiting for a giant walking city to walk past my window.

I think it will take a lot longer then their time line but it's still a cool idea.

what about logic and math? Our brains can do some funky things that even the greatest supercomputers get wrong. When the computers start to think like us (or even think, for that matter) that's when I'm gonna become a woodsman. I'll be prepared when your machines rise up against you, I'll be living off whats left of the land.

Anyone catch the link between Robot and Roman. Romans were by far the most ingenious,creative,twisted and advanced part of man to ever exist. Jesus Latin is everywhere still today, I predict if Robots exceed humans it will be an Italian or sum ***** with deep Italian roots that makes that breakthrough. That is if Robots have a future.

Robots "evolve" quickly because we have living things to imitate. As for intelligence, it seems that they should ultimately be limited by our limited ability to understand and imitate ourselves. Thats going to slow things down whether they have momentum or not. There will be smart AI in virtual environments long before there is smart AI walking around in a robot form. Not to mention that there will be very little demand for a robot that is smart enough to hate it's job.

On the other hand, industrial robots and robots built for specific tasks will no doubt improve greatly, and pick up many many nifty abilities that will make them far too expensive for most of us to afford them. Yeah, they might become good enough to take our jobs (many already have), but a human will still be required to repair and program the robot that repairs the other robots.

Wonder how long it'll be before unemployment skyrockets when robots become cheaper to employ than humans. It'll happen when it becomes cheap enough. Let's say a worker robot's lifespan is 10 years. Minimum wage of 10 years is a lot of money. Over 100,000 dollars.

Great, another far-reaching list of predictions about the future of computers, robotics, and technology. Because we've all seen how accurate they've been in the past. Not to say that we can't make better estimates having learned from our previous mistakes, but this article gives me no reason to believe this is anything more than the same type of crap. The only thing presented in the article motivating the comparison is exponential growth, though the measure for this is not common across the two groups (biological systems, robotic systems). Yipee. But if someone wants to shed light on why this idea has more credibility than I give it, please do tell.

I find it funny that still in this day and age, people still think that giving robots cognitive self-awareness abilities will be a one-time miracle invention and we don't know what the robots will decide to do. In reality, any kind of self-awareness will have to be programmed in thousands of lines of code. Some scientist isn't going to be building a robot and stumble upon cognition one day and the robot decides to take over the world

Hans Moravec, the key source for this article, has been one of my idols since I was all of 12 years old. I met him when I was but 17 years old one day when I was at Carnegie Mellon. Nicest and most generous guy.
I sent him an email from my lab one night and he told me to swing by and say hello. I was a 17 year old kid doing research and Mobile robotics was basically a field he practically had defined and built at that point, and his work was what I spent my childhood trying to teach myself and build (which I did, but it took years.) Here I was, realizing I was going to visit the DaVinci, the Tesla, the icon of the field I wanted to go into. I couldn't have been more nervous and excited.
He talked to me like I was a peer, showed me the very robots I had seen in books and pictures and had been so deeply inspired by.
At the end he gave me a laser printed copy of what was to become "Robot: Mere machine to transcendent mind." He was as dead to rights accurate then and prophetic on the future of the field as he is today. I'm pretty sure when robots are as a part of our daily lives as the TV and the Car, Hans will likely be cited as the Henry Ford of Robotics.
At least I have one story to tell the grandkids!

They've been saying 50 years for robots to save the world for the last 80 years... I'll believe we'll have robots when I have one in my own home making me pie.

I love the idea, I love the science, but Goddamn stop getting my hopes up.

I don't think computers will think or rationalize as we do at least in my lifetime...why? computers don't use real numbers, which are infinite and hold infinite amounts of information...our reality is based on real numbers...e.g. when scientists discovered that they could trace the trajectory of meteorites they though they had it right on. but, when they "zoomed in" it just becomes possibilities. Good luck figuring out how we think.

if the most innovative software we've got right now is Vista SP1, i don't think we've got too much to worry about

I think these predictions seem unlikely. I remember watching NOVA when I was a kid and they were making all these predictions for robots in the future... none of their speculations even remotely resemble modern technology. And about 10 years ago on Scientific American Frontiers (PBS), they were talking about "fuzzy logic" like it was going to teach computers how to think by giving them variable parameters letting the computer decide the best course of action. This made for some efficient trains, but thinking computers? Not so much.

In 2 years robots will be performing rote house tasks? I'm glad AI is advancing splendidly, but power supply and mechatronics need to catch up.

If you gonna build an AI robot, you better make it look like a turtle or something. When you make them look too much like a human, that's when start turning on you.

They said all of this when I was a kid, too. We'd also be driving hover cars and living in bubble houses.

I doubt very much we'll see anything like 'A.I.' or 'I, Robot' in my lifetime. I still want it to happen, though.

the main connection is that human made technology is an extension of evolution, if you look at charts that show the increase in complexity from the beginning of evolution, you will see that technology fits right in where humans came into being, thus technology is an extension of evolution. this leads us to the conclusion that robots are but a small part of the whole technology tree which is still continuing to evolve. of course, there is no reason for us to fear robots, since we will blend with them in the end and become part of the system, we can already see it when we see our privacies being taken away with technology to make our output more efficient for the system as a whole. In the end, humans and robots are technology, we just happen to be biological in nature which is only a small technicality when looking at the grand scheme of things.

I dont think technology is the limiting factor. Cost is. A robot which can do human work and think even at the dog level will cost millions easily. Its like anything else. Until its cheaper to build and maintain a lawnmowing robot, we'll continue hiring illegals. Sounds sarcastic, but its true. Theres an interesting place for robots in the future... not low end jobs - its much more cost effective to have humans pick up garbage on the side of the road than robots... not high end jobs - no way people (attorneys) would trust a robot surgeon. IF robots come about, they will replace jobs that require complex thinking, and quick delivery. Think machines that write software, diagnose and repair engines or other equipment, act as translators, etc. As for soldiers? No way. The kid wanting some help with school costs is going to be alot cheaper than a robot, and for quite some time, have better reaction to situations.

Evolution is an intelligent process. Cognitive neural nets and belief networks are still just search functions on solution space, so is a directed random walk.
