- hinmanj, on 05/19/2008, -7/+878Andddd... you gave away the punchline with the title...
- JonTheGoose, on 05/19/2008, -3/+383√-1 tells me to burn things
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -18/+333math is hard... lets go shopping!
- TyTerrasso, on 05/19/2008, -10/+211and a resounding cheer is heard from all the diggers who are math majors
- Merb, on 05/19/2008, -2/+200Anyone else wonder why 8 has this ability to see imaginary numbers, when the rest of the other numbers don't?
- aigulf, on 05/19/2008, -4/+158That's funny, I use imaginary numbers every day. They're essential for design & analysis of radar systems, communications (like your beloved cell phones), etc. Complain about how hard it was, but don't make the mistake of thinking they're useless.
- LemonDefragger, on 05/19/2008, -27/+171Seriously, some idiot-brigade has taken over digg! imaginary numbers useless? WTF? Smart people digg me up!
- mattyohe, on 05/19/2008, -6/+135Oh... " i " get it.
- krismanx, on 05/19/2008, -9/+120ahahahaha
ooooh, life as an engineer
..
=( - FishHammer, on 05/19/2008, -14/+121well i guess this is better than obama spam
- Seantacular, on 05/19/2008, -0/+106Or just anyone who's taken algebra II
- RedneckRandy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+81What's next? Numbers throwing Pi in each others face?
- chasew70, on 05/19/2008, -4/+67I can't American Idol is on!
- Soave, on 05/19/2008, -2/+64Ah, the Dane Cook philosophy of comedy.
- Zukas, on 05/19/2008, -14/+75why can the 8 see him?
inconsistent! - rpebble, on 05/19/2008, -2/+63Or engineering....or...any science with a grounding in math.....
- sh04, on 05/19/2008, -1/+60All √-1 of them?
- BananaGrabber, on 05/19/2008, -4/+63"Imaginary Number" is a bit of a misnomer. Complex number is more fitting.
- monroylobo, on 05/19/2008, -5/+64Though I hate advanced math, imaginary numbers weren't that hard to deal with. They were kind of like dealing with a variable.
- thisissami, on 05/19/2008, -1/+58oh! i was trying to figure out what the joke was, but i thought we were supposed to know the imaginary part ahead of time!!! damn, this could have been funny if it wasn't for the title.... :(
- maelnum, on 05/19/2008, -2/+49Light a man a fire, he's warm for a day.
Light a man on fire, he's warm for the rest of his life. - androothebear, on 05/19/2008, -1/+46or anyone who paid attention in high school math class....
- orangehead99, on 05/19/2008, -3/+48Because 7 8 9

- dan222555, on 05/19/2008, -0/+40Yup...you learned complex numbers in 4th grade. We all believe that....
- wafflez, on 05/19/2008, -1/+40Pointless?
Guess what e^(pi*i) equals?
perhaps cos(pi) + isin(pi)?
anything related remotely to fractal geometry!?
I hate when people label any math topics you learn in gradeschool as useless. There is not a single topic in the span from basic arithmetic through advanced number theory that doesn't have a real life application. - Doktag, on 05/19/2008, -3/+38Someone below suggested that it might be because an 8 on its side looks like the symbol for infinity.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -1/+35Great post. Would read again.
- ChefEspeff, on 05/19/2008, -11/+45I remember arguing with my teacher for about a half an hour about how a graph can't possibly intersect the x axis at an imaginary number just to piss her off. That was hilarious because she knew that it could but it's something that's hard to explain.
- mrhedges, on 05/19/2008, -2/+36I always hated imaginary numbers until I started getting into Control Systems. Imaginary numbers are now my best friends.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 05/19/2008, -4/+37I would rip into you right now but i am better than that.
- dezmo, on 05/19/2008, -0/+33a graph CAN'T intersect the x-axis at an imaginary number (if the x-axis represents a real number line), it doesn't even make sense logically.
- noahgelman, on 05/19/2008, -0/+30I don't see what you did there
- Schrodinger2, on 05/19/2008, -4/+34Tell you what sonic, you enjoy your crappy psycho-analysis and I'll enjoy being human and chuckling at a mildly funny cartoon. It's funny that the comic doesn't imply any elitism, let alone a fraction of the elitism you show. I shouldnt enjoy the "why is six afraid of seven?" joke either because I learned to count when I was a baby. Good night.
- csstudent, on 05/19/2008, -0/+29And this brilliant insight comes from a guy named poopmaster..... Why don't you just go back to watching 2 girls 1 cup.
- lolwutpear, on 05/19/2008, -2/+28Now let's forget our troubles with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream!
- Locke23, on 05/19/2008, -1/+27Tell me about it.
I admire, truly admire those who are good at math.
For now (and probably for ever), I'll stick to reading my books and writing my verses. - Doktag, on 05/19/2008, -0/+26This the one?
http://xkcd.com/410/ - hfactor, on 05/19/2008, -0/+26My turn guys...
WHOOOSH - honutt, on 05/19/2008, -7/+33Have fun working at taco bell for the rest of your life
- synaesthesia, on 05/19/2008, -4/+28I imagine (pun not intended) he meant that they're useless for the average person's knowledge. I have to agree- neither myself nor any number of highly successful people have ever made use of imaginary numbers outside of a classroom environment.
- nothin2g, on 05/19/2008, -1/+244 8 15 16 23 42 are able to see imaginary numbers. Right, Hugo?
- sarahes, on 05/19/2008, -2/+25i always heard it as..why is six afraid of seven? cause seven eight nine.
ok, i feel like a loser now. going to bed. - t0x2c, on 05/19/2008, -4/+27MAN I WORK RETAIL I NEVER USE THAT *****
- Locke23, on 05/19/2008, -3/+25You should stop using you cell phone, or GPS system.
They're not practical at all. - ousthouse, on 05/19/2008, -0/+21They seem to be in a 3 dimensional world. They should be able to see him.
- Schrodinger2, on 05/19/2008, -5/+26because seven ate nine!
- redslash, on 05/19/2008, -0/+21Dugg for knowing how to type a square root.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 05/19/2008, -9/+30*Obligatory "divide by zero" comment.
- DeadFox1, on 05/19/2008, -1/+21That's odd..... i can SEE your imaginary friend!
