- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe not for fish or trees, but humans do have a 'die-now' gene. Every time a cell divides a critical RNA marker disappears, and a cell only has so many of these markers to start division, after which it can't divide anymore. I mean, technically, if you incur NO cell damage, then you could live forever, but free radicals take care of that.
- Grassmunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn those FREE radicals. The government should be locking them away to stop causing havoc on my cells!
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I imagine life gets boring at around 1150 or so.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If my life were limitless, I'd spend the first 100 years consuming every piece of entertainment both notable and non-notable that one could possibly take in in order to become a master in each field (books, music, video-games, etc.). Then I'd spend the rest of my life using that knowledge to write and consume all the newest stuff without worrying about my completed queue.
Ahh, a man can dream... - burtts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could put signs up, that warn of Free Radicals, they would be as helpful as those signs that say, "DIP" or "BUMP". 90% of the time you can't even frickin fell them! ARG!
- antix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Overpopulation seems to be out of everyone's mind. I'd imagine the rich will live forever in well guarded communities while the rest of us deal with the backlash.
- Synekal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I truly believe the the length of time you live is directly related to the number of times your heart beat. Creatures with slow metabolisms and lower active leverl heart beats seem to live for 100+ years (fishes and tortoises). But, the contrary applies to those creatures with quicker heart beats...
My theroy. I patent it right now! - ntufar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hope I don't die before they figure it out.
- anarchy2465, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I find shows on evolution interesting, and I don't believe a word of it."
thats the funniest thing ive read all day
i dugg this, its interesting - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no... this news has no limits on it's life, so it's not "old news"
- danesparza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would I want to live forever?
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"life is too short..."
well it wouldnt be in this case, so go screw around?
what if you are gonna live forever and you are put in prisin for life? now that would suck. Life would also have a huge value on it, some one can effect time alot in 1,000 years so like 1 death would be a major deal. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad we wouldn't be able to survive for that long, our resources are being used up, populations are growing, and the environment is breaking down.
- brandenpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much is this gonna cost? I better start saving. What will we run out of first water or land?
- shawgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If any of you would watch the Kent Hovind seminars (you can get them off most P2P programs, legally) You would see a very good explanation of the human lifespan. Dr. Hovind tells us about his theory, which is just as good as the evolution theory, about a layer of water or ice that was above the earths atmosphere, suspended by the earths gravitational field. The air pressure would be much greater, because of the Ice or water, and your body would have absorbed more oxygen. Making everything grow bigger and live longer, nine hundred years longer, according to the Bible.
You people should really check this guy out. No matter what you believe, this would be interesting. I find shows on evolution interesting, and I don't believe a word of it. http://www.drdino.com - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I could live forever, 90% of my time will be spent in a massive Caligula style orgy. The other 10% would be CounterStrike time.

- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!
- stattek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0even if you could 'naturally' live forever, few people would live to see over a hundred still due to the frequency of accident/illness
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As Freddy Mercury so eloquently opined, "Who wants to live forever?"
Can you imagine having to work forever? I think the dirt nap is quite an attractive alternative. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm funny! :-D
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahhh, yes. it would be nice to live past 24. in my past lives i've been frozen in a cave on a seemingly warm day, eaten by a tiger in the jungles of africa, beheaded by the aztecs and their horses, fallen off a square earth, mangled in a cotton gin, hit by a ford model-t, and eaten by rosie o donnell.

Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, they will live no more than 120 years." (New Living Translation) - wildjohn999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Free radicals actual are a results of us breathing:
http://www.usc.edu/hsc/info/pr/hmm/02summer/o2.html
Every breathe causes us to rust AKA aging. If only we could stop breathing but that would mean death so I must breathe but that means aging so I must stop breathing so that means death and so on... - chancesarent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow.If I could live forever, I wouldn't feel nearly as bad about spending 2-4 hours a day on World of Warcraft.
- woodyear99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"SOURCE: The Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences 1998"
Kinda old news? - bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering the rate they are currently figuring things out at, who knows at some point poeple live forever, yet stop having kids, through natural means at least, artifical means would be needed (cloning or something). Basically that would mean a stable world population, in which only when someone is killed would another be made.
Granted that possible future is bound to upset some, however I'd be nice to live forever, wouldn't it. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the answer to interstellar travel. If it takes thousands of years to get to the nearest star... no biggie if you can live many times that.
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CaptSnuffy: every generation has said that.
- Homer41, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jasqwerty is right. Limitless life is impossible without some major DNA structural changes.
- zweizweifunf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0perry bible fellowship has a piece quite pertinent to this very issue!
http://www.pbfcomics.com/temporary/PBF032BCSuicideTrain.jpg - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0homer41 cancer cell DNA is most definitely NOT circular unless it is extrachromosomal... I think you are very confused. Human DNA is not really rod shaped either, think of it more as linear.
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God, something going on with my spacebar.... It is called spellcheck Brodbeck....
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0your beleif in evolution has o bearing on the fact that it is pretty much a fact.
The world doe snot work like a Hanna Barberra Cartoon where Buggs Bunns can say he does not beleive in teh laws of gravity as he never sstudied law....
OK, perhaps it does for ID types, but well, they live in a cartoon world anyway, where vegetable teach bible study... - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've got a blog post on this, maybe i can get some feedback please?
sneakerelph.blogspot.com - garretble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, I was hoping for some reference to Shopenhauer and the Will. This life is just a representation of what our senses tell us is there, right Shopey?
Shopenhauer: "That's right, G!" - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My plan is to live forever, so far, it is working out perfectly....
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jasqwerty you are not correct. You are thinking of telomeres and they are in DNA. We lose about 100bp with each mitosis, but we are not programmed to die.
We have already shown that human cells can correct this with telomerase and can in fact live forever. Human cancer cells, for example, can divide indefinitely. - mortal-god, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the secret is to put your brain in a robot body. Plus you get the strength of 5 gorillas and a hydraulic penis.
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gravity would still ***** you up though. Anyone over 40 would be full of silicone, saline, botox, and *****.
- dantheape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if i could live forever I'd want to pee off every overpass in the world...
- scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly, because humans are SO MUCH like fish and trees.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The tricky bit about dying is you don't know how it turns out until you do it...at which point, you're pretty much committed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I plan to live forever...so far so good.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know I want to live forever. Plz gimme your mystical life potion!
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! if we can expand our lifespan by only twice, that would allow me to get a 60-year morgage instead of a 30, and it would cut my house payment in half!!
- userxp101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't think I want to live forever.
- krisse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why is it that we fear death, but do not fear the time before we were born?"
- Mario Livio
Interesting topic nonetheless. - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is amazing that people are so afraid of death. Its not like death is a bad thing, its just, death. I think the fear of death has mainly been purpitrated by religion, espcially their ideas of afterlife reward and punishment. It puts negative connotations on death, and people begin to fear if they have been 'good enough' to get some sort of reward after they die. Then again fear of loosing people i guess could be a strong reason to fear it, but 5/6 of the world believe in some sort of afterlife so why they fear the loss of loved ones, which according to most religions they would be united again with, is logicaly absurd.
On all, it just must be a fear of the unknown. The idea of death must strike hard and force people to question themselves weather or not all the BS religion has been feeding them is true, or weather there truely is nothing at all after you die. Staring long and hard at the 'end' will force alot of your true feelings and fears to surface.
The fact is death will come no matter what, even if your life could be extended, you would eventualy be killed by disease, an accident, another person/animal, or starvation due to overpopulation(caused by enhanced lifespan). Its going to happen. Additionaly, you see how separate older generations are from the youth of the nation, do you REALLY want to end up being culturly dissociated from everything for near eternity?
Anyway, I dont fear death, I just fear a painful one. - Reimomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Wow. If I could live forever, I wouldn't feel nearly as bad about spending 24 hours a day on World of Warcraft.
