i don't know. my gut says that other life will similar to us. i suspect carbon based because its just the best suited. i suspect that by lateral symmetry maybe the norm... because it seems like the smallest number of parts that work for movement... 3D sensors which i suspect will detect light and sound as those are he things that are around. they will likely be a predator in their early development. they will probably be a species that has to adapt to survive so evolutionary processes create thinking and problem solving abilities. i think we might find more in common than we think.
as far as strange and other worldly creatures based on some other chemistry... the horseshoe crab and octopus blood bind oxygen to copper instead of iron... like most. so we do have examples of aliens based on something other than what we are... they haven't dominated here for whatever reasons. maybe its because its less efficient. *shrug*
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dark Energy and/or Dark Matter preesent again.
Personally I think there are other "species" (Not clairifying weither they are intelligent as, greater or less than humans, or even bipedal creatures) that live totally opposite then us.
Im talking about non-carbon based life.... while theoretically possible... noone has proven it so yet. But think about it... if you have life based on something other than carbon.... our understanding of nature is screwed. The elements required would be totally different, perhaps even alien to our periodoc table. Oxygen would not be a requirment, hell photosynthesis...well everything that we as a planet are ....try to imagine a total opposite. Your mind might not be able to come up with a ideal fabrication, because of the sciences you were taught...but somewhere....I bet something is drarastically different.
To say that the entire universe (not just milky way galaxy) conforms to our way of life is just short sighted and unintellegent. I am not saying I am right in my speculation, but there is something all of our scientists are missing here about Dark Matter....
and we better figure it out...because it inhabits 80-85% of the universe. Something that big cannot continue to be unknown. - fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So your gramps screwed up that mirror?
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0xNaquada, I for one like speculation, it can be fun. But sometimes you have to realize that your talking about flying pigs... and just leave it at that. It sounds as if you give your speculation the weight it would have if there were any proof and nothing more than pie in the sky navel gazing... I hope that isn't the case.
And yea, I think the dark matter mystery will be figured out. As well as the Dark Energy mystery. You do know that the current thought is that normal matter is 4% of the universe, dark MATTER is thought to be about 22-23% and the rest (what 73%?) is dark ENERGY? It may prove that the dark matter and dark energy are the same thing though... but that is a speculation of another matter ... :) one that I don't have the energy here to elaborate on :) - FlatLine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People...My Grandpa helped develop the Hubble Sat. In fact he was one of 8 people responsible for developing the mirror. Anything to do with the Hubble in my opinion is worth a digg. His name was Neil VanDyke by the way.

Flatline - Bretso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, now I have to search for high-res versions of those planetary nebulae! Beautiful.
Dugg. - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If there are other species out there, I hope they didn't sleep through English class too. Maybe they'll have spell check before they try to post "intellectual" arguments on their version of the Internet...
"Things that make you go ... hmmmmmmm" - Nidobolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...We may never know.
Awesome pictures. You both pose great arguments. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0flatline, I've always been curious. I've heard a wild rumor that the mistake with the mirror was because it was meant for a 'Hubble' like telescope meant for pointing at the ground... for spying. That it was mixed up with another mirror that was really meant for the Hubble... and that they couldn't just admit it.
I think its an interesting story... but it is just that... right? Or would you not know in any way?
ah the bizarre rantings that you'll find on the Internet... this one I've been curious about because I find it actually plausible. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0urk... OK I meant the matter-energy budget. Gotta realize that sometimes people really do mean just matter when they say matter... and are not just using it as shorthand for matter-energy... but they really are the same thing.
- l337dexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We were just talking about the telescope the other day. I learned that it was because the curvature of the lens changed in space b/c well, there is a vacuum up there and not down here and they forgot to take that into account.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cavenut, thank you. I've never heard of that book. Must acquire it soonest.
You rock! - rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Matter just doesn't matter. We are all a fig-newton of each others imagination. Stay out of my psychosis, thank you very much.
- cavenut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0monolith,
Read the book "The Hubble Wars". They were using a device that checked the curvature of the keyhole satellite mirrors. The technician used an American dime as a wedge when setting up the equipment. This put the equipment very slightly out of alignment. There were more simpler methods to check the mirror that showed the error, but everyone trusted the high tech method used on the keyhole mirrors. - behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great...Digg messed up my post when I was trying to make a point about proper posting. :) Let the flaming begin...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DIGG just because our technology pwns. USA FTW!!!1!!!
- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you are going to attempt to make intelligent statements in a post (I'm pointing at xNaquada and starmanjones in this case) you should really proof read your posts before you submit them. The first two entries in this topic are full of grammatical and logical errors (not to mention the spelling errors). This makes the owners of each post appear undeniably ridiculous and uneducated. In reality this may not be the case, although I could confidently argue the opposite, but we can never really know the truth because they didn't take a few extra minutes to rethink, proof read, and review what they had written. Perhaps this quotation could be of use...rnrn"It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it."rn-Sam Levenson
