- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -6/+119Old news. No digg, this happened 1500 years ago, as the Orion Nebula is 1500 light years away. Just kidding.
- Eightyford, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I see the virgin mary...
- Justus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Well then why didn't you take a picture like that? :P
- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Super-Res: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2006/01/image/a+warn
- phatcactus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's just Jesus. Flying. He can do that.
- INMCM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't know what I'd do for desktop backgrounds if it weren't for the Hubble Space Telescope.
- Habemus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7On the right I see a hand reaching out in a "pinching" motion. There is a large open sleeve dangling underneath. You can see each finger and even the individual fingernails.

It reminds me of this Star Trek episode:
http://www.memory-alpha.org/en/images/5/56/EnterpriseApolloHand.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There was a fleck of paint, from a measuring tool, on my primary mirror, so I couldn't get a good enough focus. NASA's launching a mission next year to fix it.
- vinbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Incredible - The 6000x6000 JPG version blows my mind!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the larger images dont have watermarks
anybody having trouble with the 18000x18000? - torindkflt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting...anybody notice the feature that resembles a large screaming face on the right side? It's most noticable when you're zoomed out to about 50% on the 1280x1280 version. It's kinda freaky, it looks somewhat like that evil clown guy from the Stephen King movie "It".
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think he means he opened photoshop to remove the watermark, not to view the image......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11I was just looking at the Orion Nebula a few days ago with my telescope...
- Folkfest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From the article: "Astronomers used 520 Hubble images, taken in five colors, to make this picture. They also added ground-based photos to fill out the nebula."
Perhaps that's sufficient to at least point in the direction of possible colors, which they then enhance. - manchld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG! It's full of stars...
- mvdde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hubble doesn't use color film, and can only take pictures in Black and White. I have never understood how they can convert the black and white pictures into these color photos.
It makes me think they are using photoshop to make the pictures more interesting. Or it is some kind of CSI trick where they take a blurry photo and zoom in to read someones fingerprint from a mile away. - bonyicecream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3right click the link to it and click 'save target as' and it should work
- mcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Make a joke about Chuck Norris here, and he'll kill you
- cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WE ARE NOT ALONE... look at the object in the middle of the screen :)
- Zgradis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Didn't they just announce a space station on the moon?
- hegemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NASA's budget is increasing in real dollars, yes. but over the next 10 years, as i believe congress recently decided regarding federal budget issues, NASA's budget is going to increase at a rate LESS than inflation... so really, it's not increasing, but decreasing now.
- barrys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thats awsome.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you've had it for months, then why didn't you share it with us when it was new? Some Digg contributer you are... ;)
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@indeedporsche - I'm sad to see Hubble go, but surely you have to admit that beginning our expansion off of Earth is a worthy cause. As for which is more important, that's largely subjective. The Hubble is better for astronomical research, but a moon base is better for colonization and exploration.
- loup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The use multiple filters to take black and white pictures with different colors filtered out. They then add color, specific to each photograph depending on what was filtered, and then they combine all of the colored pictures, and you then get the picture that you see.
- tonejava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Okay there is a wierd spot just near the center of the image.
Go to the trapezoid planets in the middle on the 6000x6000 image and you'll see what looks like a long bacteria south east of the trapezoid and just above the brown gases.
Wonder what it could be? A glitch with the camera? April fools joke perhaps? Perhaps some kind of alien space ship? - kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the google.com/orion nebula version of google.com/mars?
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even tho' I've seen it several times. I still digg it!! It is undeniabely(sp) beautiful.
Thats the main thing about getting old. I know I will never see any of it, close up.
A couple generations from now, People will be moving out that way!!
Cyborg
yep! - helix400, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3NASA's budget has been INCREASED, not cut. You can see more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Budget
- markbaltes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard." Psalm 19
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5What? I just made it my background and the largest image they have, I can't find any watermarks. Plus, they're jpgs. Why they open in Photoshop for you is your own damn fault.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take a look at the bottom left corner of the Upper right Quadrant of the picture (ie just up and right of the center in lay mans terms) and you will see a little frowning baby-face with a small mo-hawk in patches going up his head. If you harder, it appears to be connected to a full-grown body by a neck reminisent of elephant-man (the body basically covers the whole right half of the screen!!!). The baby-man is kneelinging down while playing with something in the middle with his left hand. Notice that left arm is massively HUGE and looks either robotic, or genetically engineered and is creating the big bright light coming from the middle!
In other words, besides this being great geeky statement you'd assume to hear on Digg...this picture is even MORE relevant to Digg than it was before I made this comment! Any bets on how long it takes for one of those Ghost TV-shows to add this to their collection of "Ghosts caught on film" or some joke like that? :) I mean look how clear that is! lol - onineko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't Iapetus.
- TopBanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just looked green last time I checked in my telescope. Time for an upgrade!
- mbiesz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice. I have a center-cropped shot of the full-resolution JPEG on my desktop now.
- ktalinu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New photos at http://photos.byethost7.com/index.php?path=Space/
- sagien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2M-A-R-S Mars! Bitches.
- hoodwinked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude this was here a freakin long time ago....
i think it was even up twice before.. - harley999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is a cool image, also you can almost see images in it.. on the right side it looks like a shriveled face, in the lower left corner it looks like a hag, and right above the hag looks like a unicorn..
- NucE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad that they have this thing still going. Thanks Col. Akers.
- KarmikTrance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, amazing.
- rankinreb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2kwel
- daverc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had this on my desktop for a week now, and just today I noticed that it looked like an old man, with white hair and beard, seated at a large desk. He's looking over his shoulder, directly at the camera. I can't help thinking, "Hi God! Hope we're not disturbing you."
- Rudy246, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I love this picture. Even though it isn't exactly new, this picture has been my wallpaper for about 2-3 months or so now. ^_^
-Rudy - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Jesus is as big as the solar system? wow

if it takes your computer more than 15 seconds to open, then you need to trade that junk in and change your isp! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9Boo watermark on the wallpaper, made me open photoshop. =/
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I've had this as my desktop for months, where do you people get your news from?
- harsh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is old. I saw this 20 years ago when Captain Kirk battled Khan in star trek 2. . . didn't you?
