Neo: *blank stare* - Hotjoelove, on 11/06/2009, -2/+26I dono, i play mostly Civ4 and games like it, so my brain pictures my virtual self as...god?
- kolop1, on 11/06/2009, -1/+23Subconsciously you are actging out your fantasy to be a woman.

Two words: PHAT LOOTZ - Seren2399, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9Or a way to escape reality and find some sort of success in a virtual life. It's easy to get caught up in an online addiction when one's ambition is low and life's goals arent being accomplished.

- Arkz, on 11/06/2009, -0/+714 men and 1 woman... lol yup! wow is such a ***** fest
- Dan050, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9I always play games like Wow and SecondLife as a women.. but I don't see myself as a women. I just want some eye candy from my avatar instead of looking at a hench dude the whole time!!
- cawfee, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6I think the real problem is that it's escapism at its finest at a cheaper price and easier availability than most other activities. It'll be the top-selling thing in that department until we have readily available jacks that plug into our brain's pleasure center and stimulate it. Funny how classic sci-fi is probably not too wrong about that one after all.
- nepidae, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6"It's hard to imagine from an outsider's perspective what might drive someone to spend 30 hours a week immersed in a completely imaginary world," she says.
This could just as easily be referring to TV as to video games. - BungDiddy, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6or when you realize you have no control over your real life whatsoever. stop assuming they're losers just because they don't have the same hobby as you.
- michelelmx, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I am not surprised, however I thought there would be more activity in the area of the brain associated with fantasy.
- appleseed1234, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I've been playing all morning, ***** Babylonians and their SDI ruined my plans of world domination.
- bones09, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I imagine it's related to how people often describe the actions of their character in the first person. For instance, "I came around the corner and ran right into a zombie." Did you do it or your character? Well, both, really. Since you were controlling the character. Plus it's easier to describe in the first person than repeatedly using third person to describe what your character did when they only did it because you directed them to.
- cawfee, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Last I checked that cost you more than $14 a month.
- ProjectGSX, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4This doesnt surprise me. Most people Ive encountered in MMO's dont pretend to be other people. They are just themselves. So it would make sense that thinking about your "avatar" is no different than thinking about yourself.
Maybe they should have tried this with people who specifically act as a different character online than they are outside of the game. - divinediva, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4We can actually see when it retrieves a memory.
- jonglebeats, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4You're a bitch lawl ; )
- aleatoric, on 11/06/2009, -2/+6I've heard this from a lot of WoW players. In the past, RPGs have almost always been true to their name--people play a *role* and as such this might be seen as an extension of their own self in a fictional world or as a fictional character whose story they are creating in the game (which could be male or female). More often it is the former rather than the latter. However, with World of Warcraft, there are a large amount of players who did not come from RPG backgrounds--at least not serious D&D-type RPG gamers like there were in the EverQuest-era MMO community.
Some of these WoW gamers are from games like Counter-Strike where it's all about skill, playing the game, winning, etc. It's not about your avatar. It's about you--the player behind the monitor. It's understandable, then, that they have no connection at all with their avatar. They create a non-RPG handle like "Pwnermage" or "Bubbleoseven" because they could care less about fitting into the lore. They also, like the comment parent, don't care as much about how their character looks and make the excuse, "I just would rather stare at a female character's ass!"
It's not that I get into roleplaying and talk in the proper fantasy language discourse and all of that. I just prefer something that "feels" like it isn't inhabited by 13 year olds. I like a world that feels believable and looks consistent with the lore. That's why I can't really stand this new generation of role-less RPG gamers. But I understand why they exist. They're just gamers, not role players. - Thuktun, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Or books (fiction) for that matter.
- chronopublish, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I have read that most men who play online RPGs (I think around 65-75%) do not see their avatar as an extension of themselves. It is generally those players who have no issue with playing as female characters.
However, the vast majority of women do see their avatars as extensions of themselves. This is why you very seldom see a woman playing a male character.
It's a really interesting distinction in mindset - when you play an online RPG, are you creating a distinct avatar to play with in the game world, or are you creating a digital version of yourself? - Keitosha, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2"Grab your dick and double click, for porn porn porn"
- BlockBLX, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2So is online gaming in general.
- GauteHauk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Thank you, I had seen these were going to be posted online somewhere, before they began, but I'd forgotten where and when.
- charlied16, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2how your virtual brain sees real you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TaphVgzzo8 - mistressarwen, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I personally preferred playing a male avatar - no 14 year old boys asking me if I have a boyfriend, no "special treatment" and it was hilarious jumping on teamspeak.
If they really want to explore the self to avatar relationships in World of Warcraft, they should see if there is any difference between people who play on RPG, normal and PvP realms.. I would be curious to see those results! - appleseed1234, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I typically go for Victoria, Lincoln, or Stalin, but I'm currently experimenting with the Dutch.
- Hotjoelove, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Who's your choice civic? Catherine is my personal favorite
- Crazymaniacc, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1This would be awesome to discuss with Karl Pilkington
- Takfam, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1If this kind of thing interests you, check out "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. It's all about disassociating you from your mind's projection of "self." I'm reading it right now and it's a bit heavy on the crunchy hippy philosophy, but overall good stuff.
