- retral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45One step closer to Blaintology
- AXNJAXN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38Did you even RTFA? The world record is 8m:58s.
And for the record, the men and women of the Air Force can fly, once they've been trained to run five miles and tuck in the corners of their bedsheets. - ekeup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+371 hour? that's nothing...
Bullets also bounce off Navy Seals... they tone their muscles to the point they become bullet proof.
They can dive to 1 mile below the surface by holding their breath for over an hour and chaining anchors to their feet.
Oh, and my daddy can beat your daddy up. - Poddo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41He was so much better when he was doing street magic... Now he's just some big headed crazy guy. Go back to doing cool things right before our very eyes instead of hyped up "exhibitions"
- justinbaker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29you are so full of *****, you cannot "Rebreathe" your own air without an acutal rebreather that filters out the co2
i know because i use a rebreather when i scuba dive, - syd4111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Man, can't wait for the HOUR LONG SPECIAL where he holds his breath for NINE MINUTES. I can't wait for the 51 minute stalling act.
- MattLat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28How you hold your breath for 9 minutes, just like David Blaine does it (I heard about this on the radio yesterday):
Step 1) Hold your breath for a long time
Step 2) Black out
Step 3) Get rushed to the ER - rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27"Navy Seals can hold their breath for over an hour"
That is either one of the most ridiculous or most amazing statements I've ever heard. You're gonna hafta provide a link corroborating, because right now I'm leaning toward "most ridiculous". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29Neither can he. He is an illusionist.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"Navy Seals can hold their breath for over an hour"
Um no they cant rebreathe oxygen already in their lungs, theres a rebreather on their breathing apparatus but thats about it. - Titman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Chuck Norris went to the Virgin Islands. Now they just call them the Islands.
- shortyzgotpop, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23HAHA that's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Where did you get that information?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21through his butt.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Yeah, nobody wants to be rich and famous.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21"Isn't Chuck Norris a Navy Seal? ;-)"
Chuck Norris isn't a Navy Seal. Navy Seals are the government's official Chuck Norrises. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19"If you've got any, please share with the rest of us. "
Uhh...he's an *illustionist*. It's *WHAT HE DOES*. Fake things. That's his gig. He's good at it. - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@zatrix
I'm sure he can stay in the tank, but I remember hearing about some type of skin problem that develops from too much water absorption. I think your skin starts to rot off...doesn't sound fun. Oh and I was referring to his previous work including his t.v show - especially that levitation crap. - bakerstreet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15...or we could remember that he is an illusionist. If he sawed a lady in half, would you be asking where all the blood went? Everything else, levitation, etc., are tricks, why suddenly are we looking at him as if he is something else?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Wow! Where'd ya read that? It's in the freakin article that was posted!
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Navy Seals rock even real seals can't that ;)
How long can seals hold their breath underwater?
The answer varies by species. Harbor seals can sleep underwater for as long as 20 minutes. To stay under this long, they slow their heartbeat way down. They usually only dive for three or four minutes at a time. Some seals in the Arctic (Weddell seals) spend a lot of time under the ice and can hold their breath for an hour, and maybe much longer than that.
from here http://aquarium.nefsc.noaa.gov/FAQs/SealFAQ/ - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Pure Oxygen - before he starts the stunt, he will be breathing pure oxygen - which makes it easier to hold your breath. Doing that, people have held their breath under water for more than 15 minutes - not just 9. (It pays to read the article.)

"The finale of this event will air live in a two-hour special on ABC, May 8." - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17uhm is this even possible?
- JAshbaugh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12One form of water torture is to submerse a body in water for many days to soften the body. Then worms are placed in the tank with only one place to go... Just thought I'd add some useless facts.
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@everyone Oh Ma GOD, ITS MAGIC! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6616406655978150142&q=criss%20levitation&pl=true
Did anyone else see that one video of how Blaine did the 'encased in ice' stunt in new york? Ya rly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yeah...but that was after joining up with the Navy SEALS
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"he has a tube for breathing"
yeah, but through his butt? - splitsixty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm more curious to see how prunny he gets after being in the water for 7 days....i'm usually a rasin after 45 min.
- SecretSanta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+111) Have natural ability to store more oxygen.
2) Train for years to slow down your heart rate.
3) Learn to use the muscles needed, the rest will starve from lack of oxygen.
or...
1) Be an "Illusionist" and create a trick that gives the illusion you can break a world record by holding your breath for 9 minutes.
2) Take in the temporary fame, before Penn & Teller tells the world how Teller holds his breath for longer in a water tank. - JShope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Turtles can breathe through their butt. In a manner of speaking.
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/011116.html - justinbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8if anyone of you want to immediately hold your breath for a longer time, purposly hyperventilate yourself before you take that last deep breath,
this hyperventilating expels the excess co2, and it is the c02 bulid up that makes you want to take a breath when holding it
been doing this for years when i free dive - satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11They threw fruit and rotten eggs at that cage they hung above the River Thames in London, England, but they love him in the states. Interesting that there's such a difference in perceptions.
- aberrantfunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Blaine:
"The finale of this event will air live in a two-hour special on ABC, May 8."
TWO HOURS! That's 111 minutes of stalling! ;) - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm more interested in how he expects to keep his skin from sloughing off after being immersed so long. I'm assuming he slathered on petroleum jelly first.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+26"Navy Seals can hold their breath for over an hour"
You are retarted - Darthemed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10What would Guybrush Threepwood do?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Not if the Super Best Friends can stop him in time!
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13sounds.... too weird.
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7One caveat: he does have a catheter, oooh... kind of shatters the illusion of magic, eh? Definitely unattractive to say the least.
- ElkAintMoose, on 10/12/2007, -18/+24Isn't Chuck Norris a Navy Seal? ;-)
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17Why would anybody want to be like David Blaine?
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8uhm, this was on kick ass moves series 2 (bbc3) a few weeks back, i thought the current english world record holder could do it for way 9 minutes, but looks like i was (or they were) wrong.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Chris Rock on David Blaine:
"Are we so desperate for entertainment that we will fall for a TRICKLESS MAGICIAN?? Saw a woman in half. Pull a rabbit out of a hat. Do SOMETHING! What tricks does this guy have? "I'm in a box...and I ain't gonna eat." *****, that ain't magic, thats called livin' in the projects." - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11its probably more to do with the fact that his boyfriend slathered him with petroleum jelly for another stunt
:P - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -22/+27He's a fake...
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"He's rich? From what exactly?" Performing, being on tv.. etc.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's an ILLUSION.
Jesus. When he did the trick in ice, it was REVEALED that they had a stunt double for him, and that when the ice would fog up, that he would trade places with the stunt double -- Go into a nice room with heat and bathroom -- Eat -- Watch television, etc, etc while the stunt double took his place for a few hours. Then they would trade again, making the ice fog up.
This is the same thing. - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well, I'm personally not a fan of Blaine's brand of non-interesting, non-magic stunts... but he did manage to bang Josie Maran, and for that I give him mad props.
- JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I know it's already been said, but David Blaine is an ILLUSIONIST. Even back when he did street magic, he has told everyone how he does his tricks, he's not some ***** magician trying to pretend to have divine powers. Also, a lot of what he does as far as pushing the human body is pretty real. I really like the one where he stood on that pillar in New York for like a day or two. I think he is actually a pretty inspirational guy in general, just the idea of having the ability to do a lot more than you think you can.
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6People who criticize illusionists for being 'fake' don't make any sense. Of course it's fake, but that's not the point. It's not like your Uncle actually pulled a quarter out of your ear either, it's an illusion. It's not a valid criticism of magic. Whether or not you can figure out how it was faked is more valid.
