It gets real cold in Regina, SK - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://simonc.f2o.org.nyud.net:8090/south/movies/boiling_water.avi
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember showing this to some roadies that were from the southern states and had never been north before .. we were in sudbury and it was loadout at 2am or so. It was REALLY cold, about 50 below celcius or so. We showed them and they freaked ... told them to make sure it was HOT water they used though. One guy didn't listen and decided that it would work with cold water.
Long story short, his buddy did it with hot water and came out and tossed a cup of water at him and POOF it turned to mist instantly. He did it with cold water, threw it at his boss and BLAMO, boss was drenched in freezing cold water.
Longer story short, it works. Use HOT water though! dig++ - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tamarind writes: "Why the hell is the column just a picture of text?"
Kind of the inverse to ASCII art, isn't it? - SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hot water + cold weather = crazy delicious
- SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tom Skilling is the man around here (in Chicago). If he says it, it's true. Having said that, I've also done this experiment as a child - it didn't look as cool as that picture, but it was pretty awesome nonetheless (especially as an 8 year old, when everything is cool!)
- joker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yo Cowboy 5595!
"Can someone help get my Windows XP unfroze and then post the vid"
Throw some boiling hot water on it, then toss it in the back yard.
I know this is true because once in middle school I fixed my mother's toaster with the same procedure. - tamarind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why the hell is the column just a picture of text?
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Can somone get their sneeze to freeze in midair? Can they tape it? Now THAT would be great"
Can someone please run out of the sauna and freeze in mid-air? That would be cool. - SysErr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, I could try if the weather would agree to drop to normal temperatures... it's hovering around the freezing point right now, when it's usually -20C...
- SysErr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like the temperature is set to hit -20C in a few days, at night... Still not -30 Fahrenheit, but I'll see if it does anything. It's not -30 Fahrenheit anywhere in Canada according to Weather.ca right now... it's been very unseasonably warm.
- Lordless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know that this is true because in middle school I did a science fair project on the "Mpemba Effect" which says that hot water freezes faster than cold, which is true as long as the difference is not too great. I used 300 degree f water, 200 degree water, and 70 degree water and the 200 froze faster but the 300 degree froze last. It was very interesting
- Pairos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone in Canada or somewhere cold make a video of this? Thanks
- thechitowncubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tom Skilling is my home dog.

You wanna do this peeing thing? Well, I would recommend some 24 degrees Celsius. That would be comfortable. - standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1people living in california are complaining about how warm it is in the winter?
move out of your parents house.... - DNordbak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw, here is a better explanation as to why it happens
http://www.av8n.com/physics/ice-fog.htm - shigata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hear ya flap. I live in Saskatchewan and believe it or not the cold weather can be fun. Think outdoor hot tub
- paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've done this before. It's been a warm winter this year, but I can testify that yes, this DOES work. It needs to be about 20-30 below 0 (F) outside. In fact, one year our local (well, the next city over) weatherman did it and it was shown on NBC national news.
- thegrinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see this happen every weekend at the ski mountains... it's called snowmaking... haha. I guess it's not as big of a deal for us northerners.
- salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have done this before since i live in north minnesota and it gets cold and when i mean cold i mean like 0 deg out so its real cool to see.
- gODfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can someone in Canada or somewhere cold make a video of this? Thanks"
I live in Canada and we only start getting unbearable cold weather at end of January/Febuary meaning damn close to -40 with the wind factor so i'll gladly make a video then.
_just fer you ppl in the ball sweatin countries to see what it's all aboot. :)
Now i know how they make peanut butter ;) - flap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i love how the guy in the photo throwing the water into -32 degree temperature is just wearing a jacket...cracks me up."
What the hell else would you wear?
This topic cracks me up...because liek we do this in grade 1-6 science where I live...I would have neevr guessed this would show up on digg haha. - number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fun AND educational! digg+
- antonbondar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0excuse me, but are you f...ing kidding me with a story like this having so many diggs..
physics 101 at its finest... lame as hell. - Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can someone in Canada or somewhere cold make a video of this? Thanks"
It rarely gets much lower than -15 (5 farenheit) in St. John's. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what's Microsoft's excuse?
- tornpage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm. I tried it and it didn't freeze (Anchorage, AK around 10 above). But the entire cup of water vaporized which was pretty cool. Cool enough to try a couple times anyway.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@xtremesniper
"Thats why I laugh at people when they pour hot water on their cars to "help defrost" the windows..."
All my idiot neighbors did that with varying degrees of success. One of them left a gallon jug of water out over night and it froze. Another decided to use hot water and it cracked the window. The last neighbor, thinking he was sly tried to use water from a garden hose. It has one of those sprayers attached to it and he didn't drain the water from the last time he used it. So as soon as he picks up the frozen hose and turns on the water, it bursts and sprays him in the face.
I took to tapping into the line for the engine heater and wiring up an electric heater in the cab of my 4x4. The heater keeps the cab reasonably warm and free of frost and snow. - greggomatic76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Is the SNOWatHOME.com company you mentioned earlier, similar to www.snow-maker.com? Their prices are pretty different but it looks similar...
- cadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've done this many times when I lived in Fairbanks Alaska. You need about -30 Fareheiht, but I did it when it was -55F
- botrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did this in Minneapolis in 1995 which was the coldest winter on record for something like 80 years. It was on the news one night in the winter. We boiled a huge pot and threw it off the deck. It was probably 40 below...it was really cool!!!
- Rawksteadi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tom Skilling is the man!
- A-money, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a must try on those -18 degree days we get here in northern Mass.
- BlazinX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now i can die happy.

- hcetrepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did this a few years back in Fairbanks, Alaska.... pretty cool
- JFDelorme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does work! Just tried it. It is a cozy -25.4C now in Kuujjuaq, Quebec. Quite a nice display. Now I've got to try with colored water!!! I will be sending some pictures of it tomorrow. The ones I just took did not come out so nice.
- alfoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think you meant John Wayne.
- jigsawhc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Video proof of this would be really cool. Those of us in warmer areas may never get a chance to try this.
- ah802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It can get so cold in Winnipeg, you can hear your breath as the moisture crystallizes and falls at your feet.... and let's not talk about those yellow cones everywhere.
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think of how it would be if you could use a shower to spray hot water out of the window or door. :-) Yay, that would be cool. (If you can get it hot enough, of course.)
- fitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tom Skilling is the best damn weatherman on the planet...
- gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is about a month too late for me.
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isepic, if you're getting ice cubes faster with hot water it's because the hot water is tripping the temperature sensor in the freezer and the unit then starts cycling. It will bring the temperature to the lower end of the scale for which it is set for, countering the higher temperature of the water.
In this post article... The hot water is evaporating in the dry air, the air is cooling, becoming saturated, and then the mist is freezing. If you threw cold water, it wouldn't evaporate before hitting the ground. - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0JFDelorme writes: "I will be sending some pictures of it tomorrow.
