- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37In a school down here in NZ, they shifted the 6th and 7th forms school hours one period ahead because of the times that students wake up, so It's easier for them to work. They've been getting much better results since they changed it.

He once did 1000 miles in 10 days, 10 hours and averaged 1 hour of sleep a night. At one point in his life he averaged 2.5 hours of sleep a night for 5 years while he was building his own house in Greece and running marathon type distances to train.

I personally can't sleep early anymore. Sure, it's good for when I want to stay out clubbing late, but if I'm just at home on regular weekdays, going to bed at 5AM isn't great. I'm a Freshan in High school... I sleep 2AM to 6AM (if I'm lucky) weekdays. I make up for it on the weekends though... I once went to bed at 5PM on a Friday, woke up at around 6PM Sunday.

On Saturdays I sleep around 12 hours, and I'm sleepy the rest of the weekend. I think I'll jump off a bridge and start life over again.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18From my experience in college, I need 3 hours to be barely functional, 6 hours to be completely functional and 10 hours to feel rested. I mostly got 3 hours. Sometimes those 3 hours were between classes in the Student Union.

- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13If school started later, what would stop students from going to bed later too? Students know when they have to wake up, and it's their choice when to go to sleep. I've seen people sleep through classes that start at 1pm, so I doubt moving the school day back would have any effect on how much sleep anyone gets.

- toby34a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've found that it's not the amount of sleep you get, it's all about the cycles that you sleep in. I've found that if I have to be up insanely early (4 AM... stupid college marching band) and I went to sleep at 1, I was able to wake up much better. It's all on the sleep cycles. If you can get 3 hours of sleep, and that's your cycle, then it's better then getting 8 (which would be off cycle).

Thats caffine for those of you that don't know - briangig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i still havent figures out how much i need, and it really depends on how tired I am when I go to bed. I went for a few years getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night, and I was always tired in the afternoon, and falling asleep late in the afternoon...now I get more sleep, but it takes the slightest adjustment to throw me off..like last night, I went to be at 4, and got up at 10:45, and I was sleepy all afternoon.

Well if you're anything like me when I do that they probably heard the snoring from a mile away. I've been told I sound like a motorbike when I snore, so if anyone just left me sleeping they'd either think I had a new hobby and insomnia (most likely true) or a disturbing new fetish, either way it'd be funny to see them after they'd been up all night.
I'm still recovering from last week, I went 48 hours without sleep and got a load of work done. For the last 2 hours I thought I was a pirate and I have discovered a new form of drunkenness without requiring alcohol or any intoxicant, then I woke up being throttled from passing out with my head hung over the headboard. It has to be one of the most uncomfortable positions I've ever slept in; thankfully there was no witnesses to me riding a dismantled shelf in my bathtub saying 'yar'. - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Taking naps and skipping real sleep is called polyphasic sleep. And it's very bad for you. Bad for your brain, bad for your body. Your metabolism will go down, your stress will go up and then you will die.

My high school tried something new this year where instead of school starting at 7.30 on wednesdays, it started at 9. Although actual class time was cut down, they were much more productive and it was easier to work because of the extra rest.

Early morning routines are such death for some of us -- we can barely think a coherent thought. But damn, I want that drug they mention in the opening!!
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There was another study on the average lifespans of people who sleep very little or too much and they determined that 7 hours was optimal for a long and healthy life. Any more or any less would significantly shorten your lifespan.

Early to bed and early to rise states nothing of the actual time he slept. You could go to bed at 6 pm and get up at 6am and still consider both 'early' while getting 12 hours of sleep.

I don't have a source, but I remember reading it several times that youth especially are night people. I for one go to sleep late because I'm staying up working because thats the only time I can work. The amount of sleep isn't the only factor - it's also the time.

One of my college classes started at 1:10pm. At around 1:08pm the prof would come dashing in, hair still wet, glasses on (he usually wore contacts), and chugging a mountain dew (cases full in his office!) - obviously he just got up and rushed to class.
Then at night, you'd catch him in his office 1am, 2am... doing research.
I believe this kind of schedule is more common than my parents would like to admit.

Because then I don't need to pay rent, which means I don't need to make as much money, which means I can go to bed at 2am and get up at 12pm, just how I like it. :-) - mdyoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah. Rem sleep..) each cycle has its own amount of time so to say someone can get 3 hours of sleep and be productive seems to be a lie to me. Your body would at some point fail if you only got 3 hours of sleep till you where 40.
