- Authustian, on 09/05/2008, -1/+17You can never have too many screens. Ever.
- thakur01, on 04/27/2009, -2/+12I am waiting for some born again Christians to claim 'intelligent collision'.
- diabolicedict, on 09/05/2008, -2/+5Fermilabs folks make it sound that making a remote operations center seems such a "cutting-edge" undertaking, when in fact it just means a VPN tunnel over the internet connected to their site terminals. Many consumer grade routers are already offering that capability for years. ROFL
It is sad the US will be losing the lead on particle physics research to EU. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4The LHC better yield some massively impressive results considering the amount of money they are funding it with.
- alappat1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I'm hoping for some crazy new possible tech- like the ability to create and manipulate gravity fields! But tats just the geek in me!
- rationalist, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Please stick around after the world doesn't end and state publicly that you were wrong, won't you - before you get too busy panicking about the next tin-foil crankery.
- digitalhair, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2i can see Conan O'brien pulling a huge lever to start up the LHC, and over to the right of it - a huge bigscreen playing ridiculous clips from Walker: Texas Ranger
- lebatte, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Why would he fight his own creation?
- Dragon3000, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2"Made in the USA" hasn't been synonymous with "quality products" for a long time, I'm afraid...
- diabolicedict, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Just wanted to add a funny article from wiki about LHC's construction and Fermilab.
"There were also engineering difficulties encountered while building the underground cavern for the Compact Muon Solenoid. In part this was due to faulty parts lent to CERN by fellow laboratories Argonne National Laboratory or Fermilab"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LHC - ecologisto, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I am working in the ALICE experiment and I do shifts. On our position, we have 6 screens which is just enough to watch all the control system windows for one single "partition" (group of sub detectors). Believe me, we *need* those screens. And I am talking about a single position in the control room, in total we have dozen of screens and they are not there to show off. Really.
- Scaryclouds, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I don't know which unit I will use, but I know I will be using the Imperial system, instead of that faggotted up *Metric* system.
/homophobic anti-intellectualism rant - pskillen, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3I cant wait to see Chuck Norris vs the LHC
- ecologisto, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1We are doing fundamental research you know...
By definition we don't really know what we will find. It is difficult to accept but you have to pay first to see what you get and this could be nothing.
Moreover, how do you quantify the impressiveness of a result ? which unit do you use ? - rationalist, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Let's bookmark all the nuts who claim the LHC will end the world, and ask them for comment after it doesn't.
After all, we know the journalists who give them all the publicity won't bother to do that... - kernel16, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Guess I'm wrong then, carry on.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1It's a trap?
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1Or it better not kill us all.
- apmtt, on 09/05/2008, -2/+1It's not called the "REMOTE OPERATIONS CENTER" for nothing.
- Zippo, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1Just, whatever you do, don't make it divide by zero.
- Realing, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0Large Hadron Collider - LHC
we all gonna die???
watch full video about:
http://video-info.info/exclusive.php?id=Large_Hadr ... - alexanEmpire, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1You can go to Jolly Pirate Donuts and take a two hour ***** for all I care!
- Dragon3000, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0You have to consider how many people are in that office at any given time...
- Boofster, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1I have no idea what this is but it did say Large Hardon Collider so idk.....
- DeucesWild, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1My first thought was 'Light's Hope Chapel'?
- Spoomeister, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE
- chrismrulz, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0And how are you proposing we do that? you can't see something faster than the speed of light.
(unless of course you're chuck norris, who also won't be effected by the black hole because he's only visiting in our 4 dimensions that are going to be destroyed) - chrismrulz, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0Looks like they're running windows xp if you look at those upper lcds.
Well, if there's a blue screen of death on launch day that saves the universe's existence i guess we could forgive microsoft for the billions of other times it's pissed us off.. - TheDiggenator, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0well any kind of photo would be nice
- TheDiggenator, on 09/07/2008, -0/+0if it works well and there is a black hole that doesn't kill us i hope there's a photo id like to see a black hole up close
- kernel16, on 09/05/2008, -7/+5Anyone else thinks that's a crazy amount of LCD screens, I seriously doubt you need that much work space. Most seem to be on random websites LOL.
- Hollow5, on 09/05/2008, -4/+1challenge steam?
- notwizt, on 09/05/2008, -5/+3OH SHI-
- petealicious24, on 09/05/2008, -3/+1CERN SCIENTISTS: Millions of tiny black holes that might be able to eat the earth... new dimensions that could bring unexplained monsters... the chance to stare death in the face... bring it on.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -6/+1The LHC will only run for about seven months out of the year, from March to late December. Although the CMS detector is inaccessible during that time, a pair of control rooms—one underground, one above ground—contain much of the electronics for the experiment as well as computers for processing the data.
- shakabrah, on 09/05/2008, -10/+1Large Hard-on?
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 09/05/2008, -12/+1The end is nigh!
