- elitedw, on 07/05/2009, -1/+26This is my brain http://www.flutterby.com/images/other0000/malebrai ...
- Super6, on 07/05/2009, -0/+18This was little more than an image, I was expecting something kickass like an animation of how inter-neuron transmissions go down
- vorda, on 07/04/2009, -2/+14Yeah it's really interesting but I think it was made for kids.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+12It would have been cooler if the mouseover clicks worked. Great reference though.
- Verytastycheese, on 07/04/2009, -2/+11I was hoping for a bit more detail.
- WorfoSAUR, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5Yeah. The brain just doesn't look the same after taking a neuroscience class.
- homercles337, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Oh jebus ***** christ, this is a stupid flash thing that reflects what we knew 10 years ago. Nice for teaching undergrads i suppose.
- IDigDiggingDigg, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Dugg for simpsons
- rocknog, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3This nothing more than thinly-veiled zombie porn. I am disgusted and outraged that this filth has made it to the front page.
- wilhoitm, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2What about during sex? That is the first thing that I wanted to know!
- druciferre, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2I know... I find my self annoyed that this is labeled as "animated graphic." It's actually an "Interactive Graphic" (i.e. Flash)
- iamacyborg, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3What!? You can't post this online. Now terrorists will know how to build them.
- patho, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2I suppose not. Who cares?
- Paranor01, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Think some people are missing your /s
Well played too :) - gizram84, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Like i said i know EXACTLY WHAT it, does but i'm not 100% percent sure how to spell it basiclly its the part of the brain that controls the functions and without it you're body would'nt exactly work as designed if you don't know that much about science i can imagine it to be confusing but again as i stated i wrote a VERY detailed paper on this exact subject matter so i hope that helps. Thanks, guys though great comment.
- radneg1, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1The brain is so fascinating. Very interesting article.
- feignNU, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1My problem with the article is that it claims to be about "How the human brain works", but in fact has nothing to say about this. It gives the false impression that the brain is something we have some kind of deep understanding of, when the reality is that we are only just beginning to have a glimmer of comprehension. Sometimes people get a little too over-zealous about science and act like everything is explained but the truth is there is a an awful lot more that we don't know than that we do.
- akula89, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1heh.
- CrazyDave303, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2you're on digg, chances is you're not getting sex.
Well unless you surfing the net at work... but then still you would not be getting sex,,, oh wait if you where getting sex at work and on digg, it must be some really weird porn you're acting in right now. - LukeBeaumont, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1It shouldn't be followed 100% as the brain is plastic, but still good.
If anyone is curious about neuroplasticity, http://www.normandoidge.com/normandoidge/MAIN.html - feignNU, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1"You're complaining that there isn't enough technical detail in New Scientist."
No, I'm complaining that the explanations given rely on the very phenomenon they seek to explain. More technical detail would not fix this. - Bloodboiler, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1That's interesting. There's an area that specializes on causing behavioral problems.
- DirtPile, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Well, I guess that explains the donkey punch.
- jeffhughes, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1You know a lot about it but you don't know how to spell it? It's medulla oblongata...
- simX, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Much better way to learn the parts of the brain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snO68aJTOpM
- diggiby, on 07/05/2009, -1/+2As related to sex:
Vision - Damn, she's hot.
Sound - She's making noise.
Touch - Can I pinch these?
Smell and Taste - I'm not sticking my face down there!
Speech and Language - ¿Está adentro?
Planning, Ideas and Decisions - Condom? Check.
Social Interactions - No need.
Memory - What's your name again?
Emotions - I love you and... stuff.
Basic Bodily Functions - Hopefully, not too soon.
Problems - Did the condom just slip off?!?!
Movement Control - Yeah... I got this. - Chaalie, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Chances is yu gone done faileded eeenglysh class, boy.
- jeffhughes, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Well, while you're right, I think they were essentially trying to talk about which parts handle each function. I mean, saying that the occipital lobe processes vision is still helpful, even if they don't really explain HOW it does it. It's at least a good (but vague) overview of the basic brain areas. I mean they could talk about the fusiform face area and the areas from V1 to V8 or whatever (I forget how many there are now), which would explain it a lot better, but it would essentially go over the head of most people.
- DirtPile, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Brain stem! Brain stem!
- jnms, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Interesting stuff! Here's a bit on how the brain works during an Ayahuasca session - and a way to replicate it artificially!
http://www.brainwave-sync.com/page.html?id=10 - Contajeerus, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1For more in-depth practical knowledge check out Jeff Hawkins book "On Intelligence" and follow the work from his ongoing research company Numenta.
The best laymens book I've found is "The Users Guide to the Brain; Perception, Attention, and the Four Theaters of the Brain" by John J. Ratey, M.D. ©2001 - 4answer2, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy
- narrative0, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0...which is the caudal brainstem, and the brain stem actually IS listed as controlling basic bodily functions.
- danydral, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0Good to see tht my brains understand tht the site designer brain wasn't working at the time whn he put up Graphical image and forgot to check if the graphics are really working or not..
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0Science has no idea how the brain creates "us, an aware subject". If you're looking for an explanation to that, try religion, or (hopefully) check back in with science in a few centuries. Maybe I've misunderstood your problem with the article...
- finklehorn, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1i thought it was a bunch of tiny men with levers and computers?
- nellshini, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1[insert Sylar joke]
- narrative0, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0Here's a review of the actual experimental data concerning the role of anterior cingulate cortex in conflict monitoring and attention. Free full text, published in Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Neuroscience in 2007. Knock yourself out:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18189010
You're complaining that there isn't enough technical detail in New Scientist. It's New Scientist. You get it from the news stand instead of a university library. It's aimed at a general public that barely believes in global warming, evolution, or the Big Bang. Nobody will read it if it goes on about receptive field properties of extrastriate pyramidal cells. - feignNU, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1None of the stuff in this "article" even really counts as an explanation of anything. Take for example the blurb on the "anterior cingulate cortex" in the "Problems" category. It says, "It seems to decide which behavior is appropriate and what we should be paying attention to, by monitoring potential problems, conflict, errors and pain." I see...so...we solve problems by having a special part of our brain that magically solves problems? "Deciding", "paying attention to", "monitoring"...these are all acts of an aware subject, but the article is claiming to explain how our brains create us, an aware subject. It amounts to saying, "Your brain works by having a little brain inside of it."
The section on "Vision" is another great example. It says, "...the pattern of light is drawn up into a kind of map. After this, the information travels forward to many other areas of the brain -- where it is analyzed into edges, forms, colors, positions and recognizable objects, people and places." Oh, I see. So the way you see things is, your brain takes in light, draws a picture for itself, and then looks at the picture and figures out somehow what things are in the picture. But now we're just explaining vision with vision! Nothing at all has been said about how the actual conscious experience of seeing something happens.
yo dawg, i herd u like brains so we put a brain in your brain so u can experience while u experience. - wilhoitm, on 07/05/2009, -1/+1Is that what happens to a typical human brain during sex?
- Kate1240, on 07/05/2009, -1/+0This was interesting, it is not very animated though. I clicked on the New Science logo which took me to their homepage, one of the topics was "Will we love or hate emotional robots?" lol
- gizram84, on 07/05/2009, -5/+3Thanks this is a great picture but i think they have one part mistaken about it basically they left out the mondulaoblugota i'm not 100% percent sure how, to spell it though but I did write a VERY detailed paper about it in grad school (after you graduate regular college) I'm not trying to brag but like a said early i think they were not correct with one of the facts. Since one of my friends is extremely interested in science and programming I think he would like to review the area where they also messed up the flash animation (the hover actually doesn't work 100% percent correctly) Thanks though if you guys have any other questions on this subject matter please don't be afraid to ask i know a lot about this sort of thing thanks guys.
- KolbyT, on 07/04/2009, -4/+2Buzz Killington could have told a more interesting story.
- chill613, on 07/05/2009, -7/+2And where is my brain, on drugs?
Oh wait here it is: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Eggs/EggPan.jpg
