How Emotional Reactions Enhance Sense of Smell
time.com — Know how a whiff of certain odors can take you back in time, either to a great memory or bad one? It turns out emotion plays an even bigger role with the nose, and that your sense of smell actually can sharpen when something bad happens.

- ziptnf, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2Who would think that our memories get activated when we interact with something that would trigger them? Unthinkable!
- surKaz, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1"Northwestern University researchers proved the surprising connection by giving volunteers electric shocks while they sniffed novel odors"
Smell something burning? - Greatn3ss, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2I like it better when I hear a song that takes me back in time
- CiXeL, on 03/31/2008, -0/+9I've lamented the near-absolute loss of scent ever since using that Zicam nasal spray product.
You have no idea how clearly memories are tied to scents.
I tried to get in on the class action lawsuit--- it dont even want any money, i just want them to pull it off the shelves...
but they said it doesnt effect my life financially so essentially i'm not useful to the lawyers.
you have no idea how much it sucks to have almost no sense of smell.
if you use a cleaning product you only smell it when its dangerously strong.
alot of connection to memories are absent. which is the part i lament the most.
the house can smell like trash from stuff decaying in the trashcan and other people can smell it but you cannot.
the worst part is every once in awhile I am able to catch a few scents, it turns on for a few minutes and i can remember what it was like...
all this just because i wanted to end a cold sooner. its depressing.- Lasereth, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3I feel your pain. I got really sick in 2001 and went untreated for a month or more. The sickness permanently damaged my olfactory nerves and gave me Dysguesia, the taste and smell disorder that screws up the smell (and therefore the taste) of everything. Sweets smell like cleaner, cleaner sells like flowers, everything is flip flopped or totally wrong. The better it smells, the worse it smells to me. I haven't ate chocolate or fruit or any sweet substance in 7 years because of how bad it tastes to me (tastes like mold). Salty foods aren't as bad but they still don't taste right. Oh and it usually takes 25 years for the nerves to grow back.
I'd still rather this happen than lose ANY of my other senses though.

- paulnasca, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0Memories...
1) no sense of smell (perhaps because nasal polyps removal)
2) no conscious visual (etc..) mental imagery ability
That's depressing (especially 2) ). - xsquirrel378x, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3the smell of pot reminds me why i still live in my parents basement
- natgem, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0It's fascinating how smell can trigger memories. I can't stand it when i have a cold and can't smell or taste anything....
