- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -13/+103You don't have to disprove creationism. Creationism disproves itself a lot.
- SiSurfer, on 07/22/2008, -22/+98If this is the only "devastating" evidence against creationism you can think of ... you're really not trying hard enough
- grungegbunny, on 07/22/2008, -23/+89I find it absolutely hilarious how creationists will cherry pick tiny bits of evidence from real science in order to debunk science. You either trust it as a whole or you don't. Keep in mind that Evolutionary Theory uses the same set of rules to explain itself as Atomic Theory, Theory of gravity, and Germ Theory. It's all in the evidence and Evolution has literally millions of bits of evidence that proves itself while creationism has exactly 0.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -5/+56De-evolve? The creature mutated. It continued. Thats evolution.
- DrivinWest, on 07/22/2008, -18/+67"Have you noticed how creationists look unevolved?" - Bill Hicks
- kleptomaniac, on 07/22/2008, -4/+53This article was merely attacking the proponents of creationism and blind faith, saying very little of religion itself. The fact that you drew that conclusion says more about the state of your beliefs than anything else.
- SiSurfer, on 07/22/2008, -4/+50Actually it's still evolution, in the same way that you not having a tail is evolution. Shedding unnecessary primordial traits is evidence that your species is "evolving."
- lilhobo, on 07/22/2008, -7/+38If you think this article is insightful you should read my article on how the properties of lightning would make it technically impossible to be thrown by Zeus.
- datdamonfoo, on 07/22/2008, -2/+32flamingduck: Uh, yes. All the time actually. Look into how generations of bacteria and viruses become resistant to drugs over time.
- Phyraxus, on 07/22/2008, -3/+31"I believe in inches, but not miles. Miles are so ridiculous and are an affront to god."
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -4/+31Belief in evolution does not require faith. Belief in evolution is based on evidence. If belief in evolution were dependent upon faith, then the evidence would be irrelevant.
- kleptomaniac, on 07/22/2008, -2/+28You have to realize most atheists (or at least any I know personally) have no problem with religion itself, we have a problem with religious folks trying to inject their beliefs into our education system, our laws and being touted as the end all be all of morality.
- MJG2007, on 07/22/2008, -4/+30"Micro evolution" and "macro evolution" are meaningless terms in science. There is just evolution. There aren't two types of evolution. It's a cop-out that says "well, yeah, of course I can't deny that under selective pressure of antibiotics, resistant strains become dominant. But that doesn't mean I have to believe that apes and humans share a common ancestor!"
So essentially, you've seen evolution in action in just a short time, but purposely choose to ignore the fact that you've only witnessed 1/500,000 of the kind of time it takes for true speciation. - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -3/+28Adaptation IS evolution in action, moron! Adaptation at the genetic level can, over time, lead to reproductive isolation between two groups of a former species; this is how evolution advances. "Liberal sciences" have been alive, well and taught in schools since the beginning of time; ever heard of a liberal arts education? It includes science. You need to remedy your own ignorance before posting again; if you're not gonna run your brain, don't run your mouth.
- randall82, on 07/22/2008, -2/+26@rft3rd - you're another idiot who throws around the word "theory" like it means the same thing as "guess". A theory in science is something that holds up to independent testing and all the evidence supports it. If it would make the stupid creationists feel better, I would love to change the term to something they can understand. And another thing *****, don't ever ***** tell me they just want to "worship their own way". Until we get rid of their tax shelters, and they get their ignorant hands out of my country's legislative process, I will do my best to convert every last one of you impressionable *****.
- brstilson, on 07/22/2008, -1/+25You have no weight of evidence behind you when you explain the vast universe with "magic man done it!"
With equal weight I can reply "no he didn't" - Zennalathas, on 07/22/2008, -3/+26I will personally drive a bus that takes creationists to an elementary school science class.
- DetpackJump, on 07/22/2008, -3/+26What is "de-evolution"? This is evolution the same as any other. It's just another example of life adapting to its environment.
- Phyraxus, on 07/22/2008, -2/+24"Theory its all just catch words for "We ain't got no freaking clue""
Wow, you really are the ignorant one aren't you? - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -3/+25You clearly do not understand what evolution is. To define evolution straight from Wikipedia: "evolution is the process of change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms from one generation to the next."
Humans are not the pinnacle of evolution, and the loss of traits is not "de-evolution". "De-evolution", as you use it, is a regression from the "best" traits that have been naturally selected.
In this particular example the re-appropriation of resources by salamanders to other senses and functions help them reach (and survive to) sexual maturity faster. If I have to explain more then you are truly dense.
To make a long story short, you could not be more dead-***** wrong. - TheLichKing, on 07/22/2008, -23/+45If you really need tons of articles on digg to see that creationism is BS please go back to (elementary) school.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -34/+55EVOLUTION FTW
- girlpirate, on 07/22/2008, -1/+22Well, I learned something new today. Do not play Hide and Seek with Dinosaurs.
- headzoo, on 07/22/2008, -2/+22The author talks about losing the eyes as a regression, but really it seems like a progression to me. The salamander no longer needs energy for those eyes, or water to keep them moist. It did progress respective to it's environment. It's just that we humans see the losing of a sense as a regression.
- ajb2015, on 07/22/2008, -5/+25yeah...but...bananas! how do you explain them.
- wunksta, on 07/22/2008, -3/+22the second law is not being violated, what are you talking about?
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -2/+21I agree with adayahead - research has continually brought to light facts that contradict creationist's beliefs, and it hasn't done anything at all to dissuade them. If anything, it's prompted the vilification of the scientific process. You could travel back in time and watch Jesus die on the cross and his body rot away afterwards, and those who engage in 'serious religious practice' would reply, "this proves nothing."
- Think4urself, on 07/22/2008, -4/+22The salamanders poked their own eyes out to stop from coveting their neighbor's wives. It says it right there in the FSM scripture
"I say unto thee, If your eyes cause to sin against his holy appendage, poke thee your own eyes out"
rAmen - rdvon, on 07/22/2008, -2/+19err...
Ever heard of the Galapagos Islands? - KnightMareInc, on 07/22/2008, -13/+30common sense makes nonsense of creationists claims.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -3/+20Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you just say 'having your belief disproven is all it takes to make you stop believing, then you didn't have a solid faith?'
I didn't know a solid faith meant solid ignorance to solid fact. - Genshinx, on 07/22/2008, -0/+17I think he means that compared to many other things that help support evolution, this would be one of the weaker ones.
At least I hope so. - u8myfoood, on 07/22/2008, -3/+20Take your own advice.
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/22/2008, -5/+22Or off a cliff.
- randall82, on 07/22/2008, -2/+19They wouldn't let you, they'll just all home school eachother into ignorance.
- kingmanic, on 07/22/2008, -3/+20Modding you down does not require ignorance.
1- The earth is not a closed system thus the second law does not apply in the way you think it does.
2- Assuming the earth is a closed system the basic unit of genetic information doesn't care if it's coding for an eye, a tail, un-expressed, or an *****. It's simply information. It's not tending toward entropy if a sequence expresses somethign useful or not as it's kinetic/chemical energy varies randomly while it's more general information entropy varies randomly as well.
3- There is no difference between evolving an eye and evolving not to have an eye. Both are DNA level changes which happen to have macroscopic consequences and both occur due to changes in selective pressures. For evolving the eye, the need for better input devices; for removal of an eye function, the lack of such a pressure and genetic mutation. - Arkavus, on 07/22/2008, -1/+17Not a very good one then.
Not that I'm complaining. :) - grungegbunny, on 07/22/2008, -4/+20"But this article, and other Hitchens articles, demonstrate a very shallow understanding of what religion is about..."
How deep of an understanding do you need to know beliefs based on faith and not evidence is shallow in itself? - wunksta, on 07/22/2008, -3/+18uh no. there is no such thing as devolution, its a misuse of scientific terms. evolution doesnt mean progress or degress, its the term for the changes that take affect in an organisms population.

lern2science :P - kansoki, on 07/22/2008, -0/+15Wow... I don't know if I am more astounded by your failure in understanding the consequences of the laws of thermodynamics, or the fact that you obviously didn't even bother reading the article before posting your inane comment, as that quote appears there too.
- jbrand45, on 07/22/2008, -13/+28Anything that pokes a hole in Creationism is good in my book.
I had a creationist in my Psychology 101 class in college. She actually told us she believes the earth is only about 6,000 years old, and that every species of animal that has ever lived still lives, and will always be on this planet. She couldn't explain the dinosaurs, dodo, or any other extinct species except that somewhere out there were more of them. - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -1/+15Let me explain - what I mean is, if a belief is based on faith, that belief cannot be changed. Therefore, if new evidence challenges that belief, the evidence is altered or ignored. If a belief is based on science, and new evidence challenges that belief, it is the belief that is revised. I know it is difficult for a person of faith to comprehend, but we don't operate the same way you do. We don't have universal truths. Even something as concrete as evolution could hypothetically be proven wrong by new evidence, and rather than fight the new evidence, we would embrace it.
- Exbzurq, on 07/22/2008, -3/+17No information does not get created when evolving an eye. Visual information was always there, and eyes were evolved to detect this information. Same arguments for ears and nerves. No laws of thermodynamics were broken, because the information was always there, just not the method to detect it. I dugg you down for not understanding basic science.
