Then after months of a coldwar standoff I remove the plank or make an opening to let each side have access to each other and let them battle each other? COOOL.

Ant communities are actually extremely clever, they have their own hierarchy, laws, techniques and so on. In this case, they can help understand how to survive on another planet and build a complex structure using on-hand material, provided we have the required equipment to do so.
