- TriplePlay2425, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9Yeah. It's not that they're "too scary" and I can't watch them because of it, it's just that I don't understand how they're the least bit entertaining. I get really bored in horror movies. Being scared isn't entertaining or enjoyable to me, and I honestly don't really find many of them to be that scary. The closest thing to scaring me is something jumping out and screaming loudly, which is actually just startling me, not scaring me.
- v10sparco, on 11/07/2009, -3/+10anyone else hate horror movies?
- zosoIV, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8I think it's because, as humans, we have a lust and obsession with our own mortality. I guess it's because life is the only thing other than death, and we all fear (with great curiosity) our deaths.
Seeing sick, morbid ***** happen to other people is just entertaining to watch and fills that void. It's like slowing down to see a car wreck.
Plus, seeing a woman raped alive by a tree is badass. - Iceman21, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Only number one was good.
- v10sparco, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2story of my life. being scared isn't fun, so why go somewhere to get scared..
- chunkybeefstu, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Evil Dead reference.
...Unless there's some other tree rape scene out there that I don't know about. - DaviDTC, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3I like the list you provided of the good horror films. Thanks!
- Orbital101, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Budgets for movies from the same year:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: $125m
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: $93m
- Rush Hour 2: $90m
- The Mummy Returns: $100m
- Pearl Harbor: $151m
- Ocean's Eleven: $85m
- Jurassic Park III: $93m
$17m is a lot of money for people like you and me but, in Hollywood terms, The Others was made on a shoestring. - 1ofMany, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Let's face it-- 99% of these movies scare no one. It's the unintentional humor that drives me to them.
That and the fact that women just like an excuse to scream and cling to their boyfriends. - nebloof, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2I just have an appreciation for horror. But that's not to say I like every horror movie out there. Slashers bore me. I prefer a good ghosty type horror movie. An American Haunting would've been awesome if they didn't say at the end "she was raped" *sigh*. Why can't we just have a creepy ghost/demon movie like The Exorcist? I get more chills watching A Haunting on the Discovery Channel (even though some episodes are hilarous) than most current "horror" movies.
- zosoIV, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1It was Evil Dead, but gosh-darn-it, there should be another!
- eawgoalie, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1I've come the conclusion that a movie can't be scary.
- Orbital101, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1One of the creepier movies I've seen is a Nicole Kidman flick called "The Others". Low budget, no gore, no "jump out and scare you" tricks... just a really well-made tense little movie. Sounds like something you'd enjoy.
- Bobski, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2I think it starts with less than the "rush" itself as it has more to do with the natural tendency for Humans to test boundaries.
We begin life exploring our immediate world and start expanding outward, never to stop until physical, mental or social limits are met.
But then many of us are prone to push the envelope. In that comes the "rush." - Llanowar, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1True, but I still wouldn't call it low budget myself.
But, it's hard to define low budget really.
Also, @ nebloof
I don't think you're one of the few. A lot of people enjoy watching movies more than once or reading books more than once. If that wasn't the case, specially with movies, there would be no real market for them except to rent or show them in theater.
When it comes to movies I usually download them first and if I actually like them enough I'll buy it. - Llanowar, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Others_(film)
"Budget $17,000,000"
Maybe it's just me. But I wouldn't exactly call that low budget.
Sure, it's not extremely insane like some movies, but it's still a ***** of money. - nebloof, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I actually did enjoy The Others. I have it on DVD >_<. I mean yeah, I know how it ends, but I love being in those certain moments over and over in the story (any story really). I think I'm one of few people that can read a book over and over or watch a movie over and over.
- seeliyon, on 11/07/2009, -3/+3I don't think this is new news (Though it is pretty interesting).
In fact, it's pretty obvious--the adrenaline rush of being scared like that, for one. And maybe to a greater extent with SOME scary movies, the '13 year old boys who like to be able to say they saw SAW V without closing their eyes once' factor. - Iceman21, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1I feel sorry for you if you cannot find a scary film, there is an element of good horror films that alters your perception in a way that you forget where you are, who you are with and only the situation the actors in the films are in exists, then the moments that make the film scary hit you like a sledgehammer, some people just can't get snagged by it.
- themysticgeek, on 11/07/2009, -0/+0There is a need for more of these documentary style horror movies. They have a more realistic and natural feel, and this does send a chill down the spine
- themysticgeek, on 11/07/2009, -0/+0LOL
- soley, on 11/07/2009, -3/+1Because I'm trying to find a horror movie again. The only ones that come close is the Saw series. Most "horror" movies are downright terrible.
