- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -19/+401"...saying that he disproved part of the theory of evolution."
This doesn't have anything to do with the theory of evolution. - noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -13/+242"Duh, you need to apply magic to a RIB, not dirt. Of course you wouldn't get a person!!!"

Yeah, poor Christians have it so hard in the USA. Maybe someday a Christian will be elected to high office. Maybe even several Christians in a row. - CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -24/+222"These people aren't stupid..." Uh, yeah, they are.

Particularly "Women Were Designed For Homemaking," "Geocentrism: Politically Incorrect," and especially "Life Doesn't Come From Non-Life" which reads as follows:
"Patricia Lewis (grade 8) did an experiment to see if life can evolve from non-life. Patricia placed all the non-living ingredients of life - carbon (a charcoal briquet), purified water, and assorted minerals (a multi-vitamin) - into a sealed glass jar. The jar was left undisturbed, being exposed only to sunlight, for three weeks. (Patricia also prayed to God not to do anything miraculous during the course of the experiment, so as not to disqualify the findings.) No life evolved. This shows that life cannot come from non-life through natural processes."
Briquets, water, and vitamins... let there be... nothing?! Why, there MUST be a God! - BoneheadFarker, on 10/11/2007, -16/+148@seruphim
I have personally met people who believe dinosaur fossils were put here by the devil...or by god to test your faith, it depends on who you ask. My aunt believes (yes, truly believes) that the devil put fossils on Earth to confuse us and turn us away from god. My uncle has stated several times that he refuses to believe that we descended from apes. They aren't the only ones. I've met many people, who are nice and polite and some who genuinely just wants to help people in their own way, that believe such things. And they look at me like I'm retarded when I ask questions, and then point out logical flaws and circular reasoning. These people aren't stupid...just indoctrinated in a belief system that relies on blind faith and strict adherance to (certain parts of) the bible. And there are more then you think...they just don't admit it... - ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -10/+137Why? What special characteristic does religion possess that makes it immune to the same kind of conversation held about politics, sports teams etc?

Dude, don't insult monkeys. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+125My step daughter (she didn't live with us) went to a hardcore Christian school. I'm not at all saying that they're all bad, but give me a break with a total student body of 89 children. the were proud that they didn't have Advanced Placement classes and that they didn't even have pre-calculus for the seniors.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -72/+189Some Christians are just irrational, I will give you that. Myself, I do believe there is such thing as Evolution, but I believe that it partook under God. A lot of people such as this guy and many others give a bad name to us, by doing the most idiotic and embarrassing things which make us look like a bunch of bafoons.
- brainovermind, on 10/11/2007, -20/+128I guess the countdown is on until we read something like "you ain't making me believe we come from no monkey". I suppose this great piece of evidence will immediately result in alleles refusing to change their frequency over time in natural populations. Those dang alleles have been just waiting for their chance to become lazy.
- waxoff, on 10/11/2007, -23/+115The scary part is, these people hold sway in high office. http://www3.nsta.org/main/news/stories/education_story.php?news_story_ID=50796
- coltrane68, on 10/11/2007, -27/+114These people are twisted zealots. Their ability to reason scientifically is non-existent.
The religious/evangelical right is dangerous - thanks for bringing this to the public's attention. - waxoff, on 10/11/2007, -15/+97@Salgat
If Christians don't want to be lumped in that category, maybe their religious leaders should come out in defense of evolution/geology and science in general. And don't get me started on Christian attemps to erode the separation of church and state. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+91@waxoff
Hell no. I live in NC. Don't leave me alone with these nut cases. - waxoff, on 10/11/2007, -10/+81Yes, yes, secede vs. succeed. Now I look like an asshat. That's what I get for majoring in Math.

But I'm not Muslim or a terrorist and I'm against PATRIOT/Real ID and the Office of Homeland Security. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -4/+67Doing bad science and then trying to make it look like science should be vocally debunked as often as it is encountered. Just like claims of perpetual motion, greater than sum energy devices etc, religious dogma masquerading as science should not be ignored but called out for what it truly is.
If I understand you correctly, these children should be encouraged (by way of allowing them to believe obviously badly derived results) to believe bunk science to protect the sanctity of their faith. THAT is the most ignorant thing I can think of. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+66digg needs a laughing at Christianity section so that we can get stuff properly categorized here.

Of course I also think that if you don't at least take trig, you might as well go to a trade school. Or has NCLB caused all the trade schools to be shut down? - Matteos, on 10/11/2007, -16/+67@TomP
"I tried making a virgin mary pregnant.... it failed"
Hmm... I also tried to make a virgin named Mary pregnant, and it did work. Sadly though, she is no longer a virgin. - BoneheadFarker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51@leadingzero
We're not really coming down hard on the kid. It was an interesting experiment and seems to have been conducted well. But the level of incompetance it took to allow the kid to enter the experiment as a way to prove creationism has merit, let alone reward him for his reasoning, is what is deplorable. If it were entered as a way of showing how stalagtites form, that would have been a great experiment that might have won in a real science fair. But this was specifically an experiment trying to prove creationism, with logical fallacies everywhere. The article author might have come off as a bit of a prick, but it's better to shine light on these things and let people pick them apart then let them lurk in the dark where they can do real damage... - raymondmarble, on 10/11/2007, -5/+54I agree with ArchieAndrews.
Why does religion seem to have an unusual immunity to scrutiny and criticism? I think it's summed up well in this cartoon:

Any worse than Chrisitans beleiving that were doomed to burn in hell after death or live a sinful life because we don't live by their moral compass and consider ourselves saved throught the acceptance of a diety?
Go to .... damnit... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+54I think they should just say God invented evolution, created the laws of physics and set off the big bang instead of making asses of themselves.

maybe you should worry more about how asshats like this are making all christians look ignorant and egocentric to the rest of the world that are not christians. - Ecowarrior, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48Dugg for: "Mister Benson comes perilously close to the underpants limit in his title."

mythandros, what the *****? - BoneheadFarker, on 10/11/2007, -3/+48@leadingzero
The bible was translated from Hebrew (OT) and Greek (NT) into Latin because Latin was a popular common language. Many parts were rewritten and some books completely omitted in around 1000AD. The last great translation was to English by King James, who outright admitted to making chances as he saw fit. You were the one who brought up the "the Hebrew word for 'day' can mean many things" argument, and that's only one example of how translations have skewed the original scripts. The word for 'virgin' is another one. The original word could have simply meant 'young woman', yet the immaculate virgin birth is a mainstay in Christian mythology. The bible should not be regarded in any scientific light whatsoever. Philiosophical, yes. Historical, maybe. Scientific...hell no... - DrunkenMick, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43ZOMG! 1st Place High School Level: "Using Prayer To Microevolve Latent Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria"' Are you ***** ***** me? Did you just use the word "evolve" and then relate it to prayer? Did they just pull the term "Microevolve" out of their asses? - khyberkitsune, on 10/11/2007, -9/+43@djjester

Baptist Education? *Lives in the south, and the ignorance is astounding!* - Pblock, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32I live here in the South (Arkansas) where, as you all know, it is the bible belt. I believe in evolution and am an atheist. I didn't REALLY think that everyone thought evolution was a lie until I asked everyone I worked with, and none believe in evolution, one even said "so you believe in all that Darwin, monkey bullsh**?". Granted its only the 6 people from the SEARS electronics department, but its still amazing that 5 out of 6 are super christians.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller-Urey
"The Miller-Urey experiment (or Urey-Miller experiment) was an experiment that simulated hypothetical conditions present on the early Earth and tested for the occurrence of chemical evolution. Specifically, the experiment tested Oparin and Haldane's hypothesis that conditions on the primitive Earth favored chemical reactions that synthesized organic compounds from inorganic precursors. The experiment is considered to be the classic experiment on the origin of life. It was conducted in 1953 by Stanley L. Miller and Harold C. Urey at the University of Chicago." - walkingdogs, on 10/11/2007, -28/+55go get a tampon and plug that bleeding vagina.
