- quietamerican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9There goes my bandwidth, d'oh. But until then:
1) Errr not just Vietnam, click the countries at the top! Nepal and Cambodia have some personal faves.
2) Errr not holophonic, just near-binaural. Sounds like OK stereo on speakers. Pretty good immersive binaural with good headphones (ear-canal phones like Etymotic ER4s or ER6s or the new Shures are best) but not as good (not as 3D) as true binaural (which incidentally tends to sound crappy on normal speakers!). Details in "links/resources"
3) Click on the flag graphic and send me some local color, kids.
4) In "discography" you can hear what I actually DO with these recordings. First track of Vox Americana is a popular choice. Latest album (Kagbeni Variations) is dear to my heart but YMMV, it's kind of difficult listening if you're not into this kind of thing.
Btw site is not meant to be a showcase for the recording technique, the best thing about that (the technique) is that you put a kit together to do this for < US$325 these days that will sound probably BETTER than a lot of my recordings. Good pair of lav mics (Shure WL183s are hot) -> HiMD for uncompressed 16/44 with homemade windscreen is a good bet.
/aaron - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4These files are not holophonic, nor does the original site claim them to be.
They are stereo, atmospheric, and interesting, but that is all.

- GRIMREAPER187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.stephenkingshortmovies.com/sound/mist.mpg the oldest craze in 3d sound! it is a great listen. listen with headphones in the dark check it out then comment it is holophonic binaural
- zachg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Swift2, in regards to frontal sounds: Marshall McLuhan-preeminent media theorist--suggested that human hearing is occupied foremost by sounds with no apparent source; if we cannot hear where the sound is coming from then we turn our heads to position it in front of us. Thus, concert-halls put the performers directly in front of the audience to avoid any agitation. McLuhan suggested that this was an evolutionary disposition, most likely begotten by--as you suggested--a weariness of predators and other dangers.

- quietamerican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oof,
Sorry, trying to get back up. Use a shared host though so I'm at their mercy at the moment.
In the meantime there are many recordings made with similar gear and subject (including some of mine) here:

regrets,
aaron - hellsyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That stephen king one is awesome. Feels like I'm in the room with the guys. I wonder if the people who it doesn't work for have abnormally shaped heads?
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****
get some mirrors already. stop submitting stories on ***** servers! - aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woah, that music is freaky though :)
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, it is holyphonic/binaural.... it's just not created specifically as a demo of that kind of stuff like some of the other things you're used to. These are real-world clips, not little demos. What makes something more than just stereo is the fact that there are two mics on the sides of a foam head which replicates how our ears hear sounds(or something along those lines)... This is much more than "just stereo".
- joxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... ummm, title should be "Atmospheric" or "stereo" field recordings in Vietnam
Theres no 3D... - pianoisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you guys serious. on the second one i thoughtpeople were in my house talking like in the other room. i think its great
- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's not holophonic in these sounds. That one posted a while back was amazing.. the one with the shaking matches and stuff. I was tripping out sober.
- Norseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Are you guys serious. on the second one i thoughtpeople were in my house talking like in the other room. i think its great"
Yeah, but with that actual holophonic sound clip, you could hear things above you, behind you, in front of you. You could visualize exactly where the sound was coming from. This stuff just sounds like stereo. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who needs DDoS attacks when you have digg?
- Chiablo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These sounds very Holophonic, but most of them feel like they have a rear-sounding soundstage. The Courtyard seemed to be the worst culprate of it.
- ethos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone else?
- toarn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hah, yeah okay, guess digg doesnt accept html like i thought it would. *eh*
- elmerfudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great effect. I travelled extensively to Hanoi on business in the mid-90s & some of these recordings brought back my experiences then to the here and now. Thanks!
- tratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish I were better at playing the Holophoner
http://www.aboutleela.ru/wallpapers/mikang/Fry_and_Holophone.jpg - gummih, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like the USA->Thunderstorm (well the first half of it at least)
It's nice to really jack up the volume on the headphones and close your eyes. The low rumbles and how the downfall intensifies and recedes. - MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is it that every one of these "3D sound" thing never sound 3D to me. They just sound like normal boring stereo. Am I doing something wrong? Can I not hear the same as other people?
Yes, I'm using headphones. Both big noise caceling ones and regualr wrap-around kind. I've played the files both in XMMS and on my portable DAP. Always sounds like stereo only. - SuperMunchkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to do this for games.
- sniegas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh my... This is gorgeous.
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Binaural. Lou (gadget freak) Reed experimented with it in 1978 with his "Take No Prisoners" live recordings. He and a German company made recording devices shaped like human heads and microphones were fitted into the ears. Turned out pretty good for it's time.
- mockstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get it - it sounds crap here
- adrianguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like back in Nam.
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can grab a set of binaural microphones for < $100 (http://www.core-sound.com/mics.html) and a minidisc recorder for about $150 on eBay and record your own holophonic sounds. I've done a lot of this.
Those core mics are awesome. - cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmong musicans really blow. Still, I digg this.
- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I could digg this a hundred times I would. Unbelievable.

} - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
The album, produced by Roger Waters, James Guthrie, and Michael Kamen, was recorded at various studios using a new technique called Holophonic or three dimensional sound.
- Holophonic Sound. Developed in the 1980s by Hugo Zuccarelli, Holophonic Sound uses the same “multiple exposure” premise as that used to create holographic images (“holograms”). Holophonic Sound is produced by recording the interference pattern generated when the original recorded signal is combined with an inaudible digital reference signal. - ethos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't feel a sense of "rear" sound
it seems like 180 degrees of sound
....maybe like 200 degrees - Impersonated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While may not seeming 'holophonic', or '3D'. You're not taking into account that your brain is what creates the magical effects of 3D sound. In order to do this, you have to trick your brain. Why to some people don't those sounds sound holophonic? Because most of you are sitting in the comfort of your own homes listening to it. The full effect requires proper setting for proper reverb. It has to be NATURAL. Hence why the matches are the most regarded for they were recorded more likely in a average sized room. Perfect for creeping you out at 2 in the morning through your headphones. If these recordings were intended to be holophonic, you have to consider the position of a 'dummy-head'. Picture it as your own head. As you reposition yourself, you hear variances in sound decay (reverbs echos standing-waves and resonations). Also take into effect that everyone over their lifetime has listened to different things, not too many people hear the same way. Your left ear, is more sensitive to tones as well (most stereo recordings favor the right side, to balance this). So, while these recordings may be either poor-attempts or the article has miss-intent, there are MANY factors that play into tricking your brain into something that's not there. Some of it even deals with other senses. Sight, smell, and touch. Disagree? It has been reported that if holophonic recordings are done correctly (in this case we'll use the matchstick recording as example) that people could actually SMELL sulfur. Which is a chemical odor given off by the reaction of lighting a common match. Theoretically, if you can achieve trickery of one sense, using a certain other, you can recreate the same situation reciprocating the senses used. Crazy stuff.
- m0bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is old, inaccurate news, posted about a month ago.
No digg. - haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg effect. Bandwidth exceeded.. Dugg for later.
- compressedaudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice recordings. Its good to hear the world instead of just seeing it all the time.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Given that we LISTEN with two ears, yet hearing is holophonic, then any technique, including "just stereo" that renders a 3D space is holophonic, unless somebody's got a patent on that particular term. The gongs of Vietnam had people's voices that popped up all over the joint. Had the people been walking around the gong/bell, it would have made their movement apparent. The technique used was to have two mikes in a foam head. This recreates the information from which our brain constructs a 3D sound world.
One thing about the demos and these pieces, though, however they were made. It seems to me much easier to place sounds behind the head, and to the sides. I never heard anything directly in front. I wonder if this isn't a primitive bias: we're more vitally interested in sounds that come from behind us, like the tread of a predator, than placing something we can already see. An assassin sneaking up behind me? My senses are razor-sharp. A clerk at Starbucks asking me if I want a latte? Not so critical. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't sound holophonic to me. I tried them with nice stereo headphones, then with a 7.1 speaker setup. With the headphones, they certainly sounded stereo, there was clear channel separation, but centered noises were not separated into front and back.
- Mwd500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds no different to normal stereo recordings to me, I wasn't able to make out sound coming from any particular area or anything. The match stick one was great. Still dugg tho.
