The image was not taken by a satellite. I did not notice my mistake until after I submitted the post. Yes, it was in fact taken by an airplane. Specifically, by NOAA's Cessna Citation Jet using a Leica/LH systems RC30 camera. - TC-14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wow, great digg, that is an amazing shot. You can actually see the spread of damage caused.
Something that won't be forgotten in my lifetime. - KNon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's amazing how close you can zoom in. Very nice find.
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2awesome aftermath shot

- zb0430, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2eugene4968, just when I think individuals can't be as inorant as they seem, you prove me wrong. Grow up. The world is not out to get you. Everything is not a conspiracy. There was indeed severe damage to surrounding buildings, even if the shell appears unscathed in this image. This wasn't a conspiracy to begin some new world order controlled by government oppression. Open your eyes, my friend. That site pains me to read... It's time to give it up...
This date will surely be remembered for years to come. Lets not belittle those innocents that did lose their lives. Keep their families in your prayers, and likewise remember those serving our country unselfishly, defending freedom around the globe. Whether you agree from a political standpoint or not, shame on you if you chose not to support those risking their lives in your name. Keep them in your prayers, as well.
God Bless us all,
and God Bless America. - jeffzoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my rough calculations put this at a 88 mega pixel image, a thousand more and we got a gigpixel............YAY. On the other hand, 9/11 was not a good thing, i was in 5th grade watching the news with a horrifed teacher and i was pulled from school early becasuse my mom works for teh government and she was on lock down, so she panicked. I got to leave early, so i was happy. Image taken in 01, at 88megapixels, that means a gigapixl is already here.......YAY
- Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, we already ESTABLISHED that. Read the comments!
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0His followup post said it's not from a satellite, but from a plane.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here’s a smaller more browser/ram friendly version, for those who just want a quick look or don’t have Photoshop.

- thepaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i spent two weeks at ground zero. this is such an amazing shot. I saw the tents where I worked, they're the blue tarp that's against the apartments, on the other side of the world financial centre.
thanks for showing them. - doofus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0photoshop sucks, says my scratch disk is full, i've even set it to use a 2nd partition which has plenty of space but that makes no difference.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1said by eugene4968: Wow, amazing how all 7 trade center buildings are demolished and surrounding buildings are untouched....cough, cough... controlled demolitions.---http://infowars.com/
Maybe the buildings are designed to fall as they did. Why else would people build cities like New York if one building could fall and knock over others.
Take off your tinfoil hat. - wsando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, this pic was amazing, however who has a current image of the same site? I would like to see what has been done in the 4 years since.
- Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crazy photo...
You should all check out the memorial they did or are doing tonight with two light beams into the sky.
Its on Flickr
What is the red covering on some of the buildings for? - sonar_un, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to see a high-res photo of what it looks like now.
- Gl4di4tor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow that is a really crisp satelite photo. Digg rocks.

- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could've sworn the hole was smaller. I pass by the site going to school every day.
Ironic that the World Financial Center is almost next door. - robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a pretty impressive image, really incredible quality. Nice Digg.
- rockyrobins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow
- LDawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How was this "satellite photo" taken from 3,300 feet? Really low flying satellite?
- Demented05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a problem though if you look to the main street on the right of the buildings at the bottom of the photographs then go up the street about halfway you see a bus which is half bus half car. Take a look.
- atmoosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This image was taken on Kodak Ektachrome ES100 film shot at 1/280th of a second at f/5.6. This is one of Kodak's sharpest film stock that they make. PMost likely it was scanned on an Imacon Flextight scanner (or its equivalent) which could explain the edge to edge sharpness of the shot (many scanners can't get the corners sharp because of film curl).
One thing that's amazing about this shot is to see just how localized the destruction is. The building to the west of 7 WTC (the one that came down at about 5pm that day) seems almost untouched for having a large skyscraper come down right next to it.
I won't ever forget that day or the events I saw with my own eyes. Those bastards tried to destroy the place I grew up in and I'll never forget that! - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Without 9/11 we couldnt have a war in Iraq - Immortal Technique
- TWiTsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Image taken on Sept. 23, 2001 from an altitude of 3,300 feet."

check out this ^ - atmoosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, the film that this camera takes is about 9 & 1/2" wide and comes in rolls up to 700 feet long, especially made for recon cameras.
- nyccharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and to think, i just work 2 blocks away.
- gohoos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An act of terrorism that still affects us all. An amazing photo that still doesn't come close to describing the terror of that act.
"shortly after 9/11/01" - anyone know when this was taken? It must have been at least a few days - there are cranes working at the site. The imprinting on the bottom and right side have a lot of the info about the photo (1/380? at f5.6, ES100 probably ISO 100 speed film) but no date/time that I can see. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Because the image is so large (14MB @ 9372 x 9372 pixels) clicking the image could freeze your browser"
Wow thank god I have Fire Fox! =) - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PHOTOSHOPPPPEED!1!
(j/k, not sure if anyone had said it yet) - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh my god! you can even see the "we will never forget" right next to the flag. what a picture !

I woke up this morning to find this post to be the second most dugg post of the day. I quickly checked my website stats and saw that I had transferred 190GB in one day.
I have gone WAY over my monthly bandwidth allowance, so I have been forced to remove the photo. I have replaced the link with several mirrors I managed to find. Hopefully they stay up for everyone to enjoy.
I am looking at a large bill from my web host, so if you can spare a dollar, please use the donate buttons on the page linked above. Help a poor college student out.
