- jdsundstrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think it is fantastic that the Mormon Church-sponsored university appears to made additional headway towards finding a cure for AIDS. I think it is lamentable that someone would use this forum to bash any religion whether it is Catholic, Jewish, or Mormon. Nice work, BYU.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article is about a possible AIDS cure. Not about BYU or religion. There are a lot of off-topic comments here. If you want a religious discussion go to prayy.com or something like that - not digg.com.
- swift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@wisewaif
Good questions and thoughts. I also think it is childish but somehow I got sucked in. :( - umrgregg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is a pump for a penny-stock. Garuhnnteed.
- CGorman68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is awesome... Though, like several have said, viruses do mutate so... Yeah.
And, Berean, I don't know any Mormons that aren't willing to talk about their religion, either for or against it. They'll respect yours if you have one so at least give that in return. People like you make me sick. - thirdplanet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4berean, are you a MORON? seriously, were you dropped on your head as a baby?
look up moronism, or its official title, "The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints"
http://www.lds.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Young
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormonism
Jesus Christ is mentioned in the first sentence of all three.
oh, and PS: i'm not a religious zealot, or a follower of any organized religion even, i just hate misinformation. - lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've seen soooo many of these "WOW SCIENTISTS FOUND SOMETHING THAT CURE AIDS" articles that I will simply pass it off until it is not only on the cover of Time, but also until the drug companies start fighting over it. That's when I'll know it is real
Don't get me wrong, I want it beaten. I know I will see it happen within my lifetime, but I'm just sick of the ZOMG articles. - ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't thinks it's important WHO discovers possible cures. The thing is that we keep trying to make life better for everyone.
- chrisc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"wow... umm.. can we say the killer of viruses..
though i wonder.. have viruses helped humans evolution.... we should keep them stockpiled some just in case they are needed.
Also if it works.. the condom industry will go to crap"
You can't kill a virus. It's not living. - nhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0evilbadger, and you other commenter's who think that a cure for aids = free irresponsible sex: tell that to the tens of thousands of girls that get raped every day on their way to find work in post colonial Africa. Tell that to the thousands of 15 yr old girls who are kidnapped every year from small towns in eastern Europe and and trafficked on the black market as sex slaves. IMHO this is not a disease that should be talked about lightly.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh yeah, where did I put my silk shirts and platform shoes? Hopefully the 20teens will revive some 70's style shaggin'
- Malik112099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wooo!!! free love might be back!!!
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow... umm.. can we say the killer of viruses..

Also if it works.. the condom industry will go to crap - EnderWiggin05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rise and shout the cougars are out!
It's sad that this has to become a religious debate on digg...really people, we are all in this together.
PS its nice to see so many other BYU alumn that are digg-ites. - clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Planets? Sounds more like scientology...
Anyway, if they can cure herpes and AIDS, which is a long ways off I'm sure, there will be some serious porking going on. - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, stories like these make me happy. Thanks 7son*2. Quadruple (however you spell it) digg
- nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does everyone always think a new promising drug is the next cure? Seems like people are always hyping up everything. I guess it is just wishful thinking...
Isn't that what people said about AZT as well? It seemed perfect since it blocks reverse transcriptase in HIV. Do these people understand that AIDs has one of the highest rates of mutation and evolution of any organism in today's world? Just ask a microevolutionist or virologist.Even if this drug was a breakthrough, it probably wouldn't last too long. - nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0right on, lampshade...
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hope it's true. Unfortunately, they'll always be some deadly disease out there.
- Thundercat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@shiftless: Uh, where do you think you're going to hear about Salt Lake City regional news first? The Washington Post?
- Mr.Chainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HEY! I live in utah alright. It's not like its a third world country. So who ever thinks its a useless country can go to hell. Also Byu is a very smart college. I'm very glad that we are getting closer to a cure.
- Damaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We've been able to kill the actual AIDS virus with antiretroiviral therapy for some time now; the problem is killing the CD4 that ARE infected with HIV.
- TidusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It goes to show that the cure for aids and cancer will come from university and government research and probably not from pharmaceutical companies. I hope this research turns into something promising. Good find.
- thal3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, sorry, no way.
AIDS is a retro-virus. It embeds itself into your DNA. Only Star Trek technology can remove virii of this nature. Maybe (MAYBE!) we can create a vaccine, but a cure? Won't happen in anyone's lifetime reading these comments.
Yes, i'm too busy to go find some links on Google... :-) - tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will have to see this one to believe it.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I go to BYU and I think it's funny that I woudl hear BYU news on Digg before on campus...
Of course, seeing as our "award winning" campus paper ( http://newsnet.byu.edu ) is a few days behind in just about every new story - I guess it is believable.
(The NYTimes even ran a front page story about our soccer team going semipro and also scooping our campus paper on the topic) - rayjay2380, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK just to say this put BYU on the map again. first we got our TVs from a byu prof and then a artificial heart from byu now BYU will help end the aids virus.
and for the Mormon bash er this story has nothing to do with Mormonism I would know cause I'm a Mormon also. - ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's been a lot of activity on this front this month. Don't know how you can not dig this.
Of course this means that the Bird Flu will 'suddenly' make the leap to human-to-human contagion.
Or maybe not. Don't be suprised if it does. - jessecollins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The stock had 122% gain on the day. I wonder how it will fair tomorrow.
- nhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well put jdsundstrom :)
- CynicalBastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...There are a huge number of compounds, even some spices, that suppress HIV in the test tube. Behavior in the body is frequently another story...."
Bleach will kill AIDS very effectively, unfortunately it also has negative effects for the host organism. While I truly hope a real solution to save 40M people can be found, I am skeptical of academic research that has not yet been peer-reviewed. If it does work there is an entire continent that could use some help today and might not wait for the FDA to approve the drug.
I believe the FDA tries hard to only let good drugs through the system. However, I have read too many pharmaceutical studies to know that they are the biggest promoters of statistical terrorism. Meaning they find perfect human specimens and subject them to whatever their drug is. The person who can run back-to-back marathons will not have troubles with an Asthma medication.
If all is as reported...Go them! - nhansen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well, since a Mormon discovered a potential cure for AIDS, we should discount it and let the disease continue to ravish its victims. Although I have to wonder if the comments here would have been less off topic had the scientist been ANY other religion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm Mormon and this is interesting news :)
I'm too lazy to read all 70 comments, but can I say that a Mormon general authority - while reading the Book of Mormon - thought of the concept for the modern, successful artificial heart? Basically he invented it. Why should this be any different...? We'll see... - snugja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go Cougs!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I hope AIDS is Xed anyway. This looks like it'll work nicely.
If AIDS adapts to it, though, we are *cue rock music* for-e-ver pwn3d. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AIDS, damn.
WE always have hope, and I hope it works, that would be awesome. It would save millions of deaths every year. - 7son7son, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please...enough with the Flames and the off topic discussions about Mormonism or antimormonism. I simply posted this because I found it to be a little promising on eradicating the AIDS virus and maybe helping millions throughout the world. Promoting the predominant religion at BYU had nothing to do with it. I just wanted people to be informed that progress appears to have been made in this Fight. Which is wonderful
Thanks for your comments @jdsundstrom - CatCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing to jump up and down about yet since it's not peer-reviewed. Also the article does not go into any detail about how the tests were performed. If it was just a CSA-54 vs HIV grudge match in a petri dish than that doesn't really extrapulate to real world results, since in the real world HIV is hiding out in the CD4 cells.
- thyratron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Has BYU prof found AIDS cure?"
Probably not. There are a huge number of compounds, even some spices, that suppress hiv in the test tube. Behavior in the body is frequently another story. Even if it IS effective, for it to be a "cure" it would have to get into every place in the body that hiv can. Many drugs cannot effectively cross the blood-brain barrier. If there's any placve where hiv can hide, it'll return to the rest of the body as soon as a drug is withdrawn. That's why most medications have to be taken on a contining basis. That, and exclusive rights to manufacture (as mentioned in this article) are what make treatment so extremely expensive. Because of the high profit potential, articles like this seem to be hype more often than not. It's best to wait until peer-reviewed trials have shown good results to get excited. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope it is, but I'll believe it when it's on the cover of Time.
- Factionalism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firstly, not peer-reviewed-- so still stay skeptical.
Secondly, let's say hypothetically, it is the cure. What is stopping the drug companies from charging an exorbitant amount for the medication, thereby preventing it from doing the most good in African nations where HIV and AIDS are much bigger problems, comparatively, than in Western nations? Is this a blank cheque for a pharmaceutical company? - osrevad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the Block button. Especially the fact that it's permanent.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this treatment ends up working. It'd save a lot of peoples' lives.
- aszurom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, they say it has to go through a lot of testing before it's deemed "safe". Well, I could guess about 40 million people who'd be willing to step up and try it out, approved or not by the FDA.
- psyaeger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just another hype story. We live in a time when everyone believes disease cures are just around the corner and that many other breakthroughs are only a matter of time. Unfortunately, it is more likely that our society is simply buying into the mythology of Super Mankind in which the wonders of past technological breakthroughs rises to a new crescendo. Unfortunately, reality rarely supports our belief that we are special or chosen or on the verge of wonders. This is also seen by the legions of believers who generation after generation buy into the mythology of End Times. It's definitely happening in our lifetime, they believe (whether about disease cures or savior second comings). Reality and Time will likely prove otherwise. We humans, I'm sorry to say, aren't special or chosen or destined for anything other than what is. Everything else is wishful delusional romanticized thinking.
- rokaholic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@berean
Completely off-topic, that alone makes it a flame. Take your ridiculous religious bashing discussion elsewhere. We came here to discuss a potential cure for AIDS and thats all you have to talk about? - EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yay, now they can ban condoms without the controversy
- imnotquitesure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What does it matter if the guy is Mormon or not? I'm sure BYU has professors of other religions. Would it matter if this were at Notre Dame, would we get links to anti-Catholic sites unrelated to the story. Why not submit those links as a digg story and argue about their merits on their comments not here on a science post. Good science is good science. This is not the place for a Mormon bash. There are plenty of other places on the internet for this. That is why those posts were removed, cause I'm sure there are tons of Mormons on digg, combing the comments to silence all opposition.
- tehpwn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Aids is only one out of 40,200 different STDs that can be spreaded, even without symptoms.
And i believe Aids exists for a reason, maybe a divine reason.
If there werent any freaky crazy things happening recently (teh gheys) things wouldnt be as bad. - zholmquist, on 03/04/2009, -1/+0All though religion has nothing to do with it, since all humanity will benefit from the find, a simple Google into "Mormon Inventors" pulls up quite the list of things you flamers use daily . . .
