Happy Pi Day!
news.bbc.co.uk — It's the 3/14, or 3.14, so this obviously means just one thing - it's Pi day, a celebration of the mathematical ratio that man has been trying to unlock for millennia. But why are we driven to find the answers behind it?

- precog29, on 03/15/2008, -10/+4I'm suprised no one replied with any insight into why pi is so important. It is not simply a mathematical symbol that can be rounded. It is in it's essence a vibrating thought within our minds which we cannot comprehend as human beings. It is a paradox itself, and the reason why we believe it is a paradox is because we are still human. For others the paradox is a veil that has been lifted and they can comprehend the true nature of infinity itself. The mathematical code itself is much like our DNA. It is alive. The reason why humans get stuck up on pi, is because infinity equals infinity while at the same time infinity does not equal infinity because infinity is something undefined. That's the paradox. When you get past the paradox.... well I'll let you find out for yourself.
- goldisalie, on 03/15/2008, -1/+15What a load of rant fluff! Please people, separate the concept of transcendentals from pi, yes pi is transcendental, no transcendentals are not amazing freak occurances that represent the 'paradox' of infinity. It is a proven mathematical fact that in the set of all real numbers (R), transcendentals are ridiculously more common than integers. That is to say, infinity is not a particularly amazing concept to get your head around. Zoom into a fractal for a couple of hours and you will begin to get it.
Mathematical code, like DNA? Alive?? Maths is a set of human constructed axioms, and the only reason it achieves perfection is because it is bounded by the human defined axioms we created. It is a set of rules we made up based on our own human observations of logic, thats it. That is why maths is a universal constant, not because of some amazing feature of nature, but because we said that everywhere in our universe our axioms will hold, because we defined them. Reality is noisy, fractals are as close as we have gotten to modeling something like reality, and even here maths is woefully incapable at truly defining natural phenomena. Sure we can achieve remarkable things, but nothing that amazing when you think about it.
I'm just getting sick of people fawning over fairly rudimentary mathematical axioms and attaching way more meaning to them than there really is, when they don't even really know what they are on about.... now digg me down bitches but I challenge you all to get out and really learn some maths rather than just being idiot fanbois... sheesh.- rootneg2, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2no kidding.

There is no question that the "precog" is going stupid-pseudoscience on us (no better than What the Bleep... terrible terrible documentary). but:
"...axioms will hold, because we defined them." is imho a bit of an oversimplification. There is some sort of "reason" underlying these axioms, and why we choose them (as opposed to some other set of axioms). They may not be logically "provable" but there is some sort of fundamental truth to them; it genuinely seems that they *have* to be true in order for math/logic/rationality to "work" consistently and completely with the universe as we know it. There is something very deep and mysterious about The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences.
Also, i think that there is something pretty profound and amazing about certain mathematical relations and constructions. Just taking Euler's relation for instance: There doesn't seem to be any intuitive reason that e, defined as the limit (taking n to infinity) of (1+1/n)^n (or alternately, solving for c in (integral (from 1 to c) of dx/x) =1) would have such a profound connection to the ratio of a circle's diameter to it's circumference. Each number was "discovered", used, and enumerated fairly extensively before their intimate relation to one another was discovered. I think this is very indicative of the deepness and richness of the field of math. - goldisalie, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Yes I agree, there is something uniquely true about the particular axioms we choose, but this only holds because our experience is still defined only by well, our experience. We observe, through the filter of human perception, then we postulate, it is not suprising that the set of axioms we define based on our human experience conforms to said experience. But you cannot simply extend this to 'all universal truth'. Humans are limited, this is a fairly philisophical topic, and largely personal.
Yes, pi fits beautifully into Eulers formula... but only in radian measure! Why is that, and what significance does it hold to the number pi versus the relation that defines pi? You with me? My point here is the number itself is irrelevant to the formula. If we take Eulers formula in degrees it becomes e^i*180 +1 = 0 hardly as sexy now is it? But still just as universally true. We could again defines some arbitrary measure of angle, say theres four quarts in a circle...? then we get e^i*2 +1 = 0. My point wasn't that there isn't something amazing about the relations re define, my point was that every discussion of pi devolves into this omg it has infinite decimals pi is so amazing and nobody can ever understand it, its a universal truth and I might as well be seeing god himself fap fap fap stuff.
Now, on the matter of the perfection of our axioms: we are constantly redefining and creating new maths to fit with new observations of reality. The inclusion of the complex number itself involved the creation of new axioms, simply to make it work, and yet today we do not consider it anything that special that we needed a new number line: we have dozens of them. The are areas of maths where one set of 'universal' axioms do not hold, euclidian geometry is easily broken and in fact Einstein proved we exist in non-euclidean space, thus most geometric axioms actually do break down in reality. Triangles don't universally contain pi radians as the sum of their internal angles, parallel lines DO intersect, infinity CAN be bounded by the finite. In fact it is quite easy to create new sets of axioms which are entirely self-contained and universally true, which at the same time contradict all the other universally true axioms. Again as I said, our axioms hold because we say they do, thats the rules. And quite often we go so far as to say, well now were gonna break those rules with contradictory, and yet entirely true axioms.
I do however agree that we have a penchant for creating very very useful mathematical axioms!! (great conversation by the way... to bad the GP is buried)- rootneg2, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1You can take the "existentialist black box" view of the world, which is perfectly valid, and it which case, no, nothing exists outside our own perception, including truth, math, logic etc. This doesn't seem to me to be a particularly *useful* viewpoint however, and it seems much more valid to think that there actually is a "real world" and that our (at least, objective, quantitative) observation and perceptions are somehow a universal reflection of such. both me and the guy next to me see two apples, then there *are* two apples. Of course, relativistic effects and quantum mechanics have to be dealt with; but this is nearly always simply a question of semantics.
pi is undeniably a fundamental part of Euler's relation. There may be a geometric *interpretation* as angles, moduli, and distances, with pi thought of as nothing more than a unit of angular dimension, but it truly doesn't take much complex analysis to see that the relation is true aside from it's geometry, and in a very "raw" numerical sense e and pi are the only values which fit. You would *never* see a mathematician formulate the Euler relation in terms of degrees.
Axioms are never so much redefined or entirely reformatted, as much as refined and extended. Non-euclidean geometry must still be constructed and analyzed in terms of "tangent bundles" (a fibre bundle of vector spaces; each point of the parent space has a euclidean linear/vector space attached "tangent" to the space, where the zero vector is coincident to the space at the point of tangency ) and euclidean geometry is necessarily a limiting case of any construction or statement, such as one involving the sum of angles of a polygon. Don't ***** with me on this, I've got several years of graduate level differential geometry/topology under my belt :o) Even when an axiom like Euclid's Fifth Postulate is "broken" in this manner, it typically only is because mathematicians have a sort of "hunch" that it should be extendable; Euclid's Fifth was seen as unnecessary, and ugly (and attempts to prove it in terms of the other four were made) for years and centuries before non-euclidean geometry was finally formulated in a rigorous manner. The first four axioms as still very fundamental, and the fifth is still a very (provably) true limiting case. Even i (and -1 before it, 0 before it) never truly violated any axioms that were not already seen as "feeble" or "artificial" by other mathematicians.
From all I have seen in math, it is my personal belief that math is discovered, not invented; and that we are merely uncovering and approaching very fundamental universal truths, not simply constructing some arbitrary self-consistent system. Clearly i have not way of knowing this absolutely, you might consider it a sort of "personal axiom of faith"; and i do admit it smacks of the "seeing god himself fap fap fap stuff", but personal philosophy and rational science diverge very rapidly, and while grandiose visions of profundity of the universe and existence may not have a place in scientific documentaries, or peer-reviewed journals, it doesn't mean they are not a valid avenue of discussion, or topic of thought. (precog's and the What the Bleep crowd's problem is rooted in the fact that they practice poor *science*, and try to pass off philosophy as truth) - goldisalie, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Hey hey, I'm not trying to ***** with you, I am merely stating a different perspective. I take my hat off to you, I am still well and truly at the undergrad level and I plan on going much further with my maths after I get engineering out of the way, so kudos to you sir. I love maths! :)
I do not as such see the 'existentialist black box' point of view as though nothing exists outside our perception, the way I see it is that it is kind of pointless and logically inconsistent to try and comprehend that which is incomprehensible, you have to extend into the realm of faith which I do not believe is valid. I absolutely agree that there exists a world outside our perception, I simply do not consider it valid to make assumptions about this, given the limitations of our consciousness. I don't write this as a bunch of philisophical wanking, I consider this an important and central part of science.
Now, you may have a load more math under your belt than I do, however I still fundamentally disagree with your claim that there is something absolute and scientific (as in reality) about mathematics. I am actually firmly of the view that this notion invalidates the perfection of mathematics, but I take the view of one with more of a science background than a maths background, and you mathematicians do get quite obsessed with believing maths IS reality (which is fair, but debatable, and no offense there by the way). It just tends to be that mathematicians aren't often scientists, and seem to miss the point of science when they take this view (I remember clearly my orbital mech lecturer telling us not to listen to hypothetical nonsense from mathematicians who believe their math is absolute truth, this is the guy who heads the department that built the worlds first working scramjet mind you, not quite any old chum). The problem with this view is that observation includes exceptions to all rules, and mathematical axioms don't work like that. You can't take a statistical spread of examples of something simple like the distributive law and find outlying data points where in *some* random occurances, the distributive law is violated. This is a prominent feature of observed reality, there are outliers, there is noise.
In short, I disagree, I do believe that math is some arbitrary self consistent system, one that is hugely applicable to modelling observed reality and I believe it has to be self consistent and nothing more, in order to work. If math were not self contained and isolated from the observed universe, then it would not be universally consistent, because we know that the universe is not universally consistent from observation. It comes damn close, but there is uncertainty. There is no uncertainty in maths... wouldn't that violate the very idea of an axiom? - goldisalie, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Oh and thanks for the various insights by the way, as I said I'm not a mathematician, just a curious and interested tinkerer (and L plater)... at least you seem to agree the fawning over the transcendental nature of pi kind of misses the point ;)
- rootneg2, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1hmm.
Well, Math != physical reality. That i agree with. Mathematical and logical "truth" is somehow separate and distinct from physical "truth"; that there just so happens to be such an amazing correspondence between the two is, well, amazing. I also believe there is a distinct difference between what I am trying to call "fundamental mathematical truth" and what we have "discovered" of math so far. Much like known scientific theory *approaches* physical truth, but still has holes, gaps, and flaws.
I suppose you can call me a platonist. I believe in Plato's so-called "realm of forms", and that its "reality" is no less than the "reality" of the physical world, and although quite distinct, they somehow mirror and parallel one other in some very deep and profound manner. Our knowledge and understanding of each (and their relation) is necessarily incomplete, but it is precisely because of this relation that we are able to use one in order to better understand the other (and vice-versa; many mathematicians do not like to admit it, but the manner in which we discover deeper math, even higher, abstract math, is more grounded in physical observation than it may seem; the observation is simply of a much more qualitative, general, abstract nature)
I also wonder who it is that's digging you down... might they have something they would like to contribute to the conversation perhaps? - goldisalie, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1All in all, thanks for an insightful conversation. I get dugg down all the time, I'm actually shocked I scored a comment with a whopping 13 diggs! :)

- bjgpp, on 03/15/2008, -1/+29I thought it was Steak and Blowjob Day?
- bitterbug, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1It is. Be gentle. I don't wanna choke on my steak.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 03/15/2008, -2/+2You only have one steak and blowjob day? How sad you must be all the time.
- zvarnell, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0This is just now making the front page and pi day is over in many places.
- grabadores, on 03/15/2008, -4/+3it's such a shame about pi day. the only real one was 3/14/1592 (1593 if you round), but they hadn't discovered pi yet and so it wasn't properly celebrated.
- smrekar, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2i actually celebrated at 3pm miltary time 3/14 15:09:26
- Musicmonkey34, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1rounding pi was never kosher with me

- bianconeri4ever, on 03/15/2008, -2/+5Hmm Digg's algorithm at it's glory!! This got to FP after half the world moved on to 15th of March.....Good job digg!!
- lukeredfive, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1our school had a pi day assembly thanks to the math department, lead by our apcalc teacher and acadeca leader, mr. grubis. it made me so happy. there was a memorization contest, a pie in the face of a few teachers, and we sang a pi song instead of the national anthem.... it was epic. MUCH more interesting than one of the many sports assemblies and probably the first assembly ive ever enjoyed.
happy pi day!- TitoJackson, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0Well something has to replace getting laid.

- moletimer, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Sir, I bear a rhyme excelling
In mystic force, and magic spelling
Celestial sprites elucidate
All my own striving can't relate
Or locate they who can cogitate
And so finally terminate.

My potenial partner on a celebrity and millionaire dating site interracialresources.com is a crazy math fan. She told me pi day are not welcome in her circle.
- SpookyPig, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure if you're spamming, trolling, or just being stupid.
- philippantoni, on 03/15/2008, -1/+0The pi is a lie.
- ClassicResort, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Maximillian Cohen: 9:22, Personal note: When I was a little kid my mother told me not to stare into the sun, so once when I was six, I did. At first the brightness was overwhelming, but I had seen that before. I kept looking, forcing myself not to blink, and then the brightness began to dissolve. My pupils shrunk to pinholes and everything came into focus and for a moment I understood.
- camino262, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1I like apple pie.

- pier2, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0We had a PI Day party last night with friends who brought square pies (PI R Squared), wore PI (and a little pie) on their shirts, and had a great time. PI Day should be a global holiday.
