- Clarendon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A couple of other points:
-To get the health benefits from the research, you have to drink A LOT. I drink close to 1 gallon/day, which creates the other little-mentioned side effect of stained teeth. Of course good dental hygiene will mitigate, but some staining is unavoidable. To avoid the effects of staining, consider instead White Tea - similar to green but completely un-fermented.
-Not surprisingly, the quality of the nutrients (and taste) vary wildly with the quality of the tea. There are many online sources for top-quality bulk green tea. The per-cup cost of the best teas will still be a fraction of the cost of Cokes or that Latte from Starbucks. The package of boxed teabags in the corner of your employee kitchen at work is made from the cheapest part of the leaves and stems and tastes accordingly. Start buying the good stuff and soon you'll develop a discerning palate for Baimudan, Senchan, etc.
-For God's sake, don't use tap water! Steam distilled water is best, but filtered water will do in a pinch. Nasty water, nasty tea. Don’t ruin the health benefits by making your tea with the nasty stuff in your local water supply.
-A lot of people fret about the temperature of the water used to brew the tea. I have gone as far as to test it with a thermometer and cannot tell a difference between brews made with 160-220 degree temperature water. JMHO, YMMV.
-For some reason the first cup can give me a tummy ache on an empty stomach. Supposedly this comes from the upsetting of the ph balance in your stomach. To avoid this effect I pour in a bit of hot water, swirl it around, and pour it out. No more tummy ache!
Finally...I always chuckle when we Americans "discover" the “exotic” taste of Green tea - it is the second mostly widely consumed beverage in the world after water. As usual, we’re late to the game on this one. - geomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Problem: Aluminum.
Green teas and coffee are grown in regions where the soils are highly concentrated in natural aluminum. Aluminum does not leach from coffee due to the fact that it doesn't concentrate in the berries but in the leaves. This concentration behavior is what causes the problem for teas.
If you are going to get the benefits from green tea, substitute your tea leaves for extracts. The tea extracts have had the aluminum removed and are less of a risk factor for Alzheimer's than the leaves. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've also lost weight while drinking lots of it for the past year, but basically its just a component in a healthy diet.
Buy loose tea, you won't be able to go back to bags when you do. So much better! Buy it in Chinatown too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I believe the FDA has come out saying that Green Tea has no proven benefits"
Yeah, because theres no money to be made in preventation. - Davey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Drinking green tea does very little of anything. People who drink green tea tend to have healthier diets.
- Emancipator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I believe the FDA has come out saying that Green Tea has no proven benefits
There website has a section of supplements and warnings about supplements. - frosted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tea? It's not the tea! This reminds me of the hype over ginseng, red wine, and so many diet fads. It's *****. Drink 1 to 2 gallons of water a day and surprisingly, you see the same benefits. Water from your tap that is cold is just fine if you live in a city, in fact, many bottled waters come from city taps. Don't drink hot water from the tap if your house has old pipes, there is a likelihood that the lead used in the solder between pipes will taint the water, but that is the biggest danger. Don't fall for the hype, these studies were not done with a proper control. Hell I remember reading that red wine helped the heart, then they did another study that showed red grapes did the same thing, then another study showed citrus fruits did the same thing. Don't get conned. To loose weight, just eat fewer calories and exercise more. And please, don't fall into the old belief that fewer calories mean less food. A cup of chopped carrot has about 53 calories, a McDonald's crispy chicken club sandwich has 680 calories. You could eat more then 10.5 cups of carrots (and have orange skin) for that many calories. Hack your damn diet, and get off your ass, stop looking for a cure all and put in the time and effort to get the job done.
- unrealMcCoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with kabigon. This has nothing to do with tech. NO DIG!!!
This is all about someone trying to kiss them some Kevin Rose ass...
But while on the subject, I've been hitting up my local (Dallas) Teavana lately for greens and whites. They've got some interesting blends. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Wow! Thanks for this awesome TECHNOLOGY article! You know digg is going downhill when this kind of crap makes the front page. No digg."
Digg is user controlled. There is a consistent trend towards submission and diggs of articles not related to technology. - molecool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Japanese green tea is the best. I am lucky enough to live in L.A. where we have "Little Tokyo', which has a bunch of related stores. My tip: Don't be cheap and buy the top brand - it'll set you back $10.- or so, but trust me, you have NOT tasted green tea like this before - there is a world of difference. Again, that's the price I pay in Little Tokyo - I'm sure the same tea at Whole Foods would set me back 30 bucks. On an unrelated note: the same applies to sake.
- wintwh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can also buy loose tea from here....http://www.adagio.com/
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg needs to add a "Not Tech Related" option to the problem reporting list. This is nuts."
Apparently around 450 people don't mind it. Digg will evolve even if you can't. - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I believe the FDA has come out saying that Green Tea has no proven benefits."
The FDA tends to say that about a lot of natural herbs and supplements. Do you think the FDA will favor such a thing when they favor drug companies more?
They even say stevia is bad for you. Mind you, the Japanese have been using stevia for ages as it has better health benefits. - kurt880, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Other side of the case- how bad green tea is for you http://www.mercola.com/2000/sep/10/green_tea_fluoride_thyroid.htm
Also, what about the aluminum risk that geomon (0) mentioned? - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm I'm getting low on my green tea. Time to go to the store and get some more.
By the way, the brand I use is named Stash - Freonce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone have particular brands they buy?
After reading this article I think I'll give green tea a shot, but I don't want to be thrown off just by a bad brand. Any help is appreciated.

Which Chinatown?.... - mrdeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, I haven't gotten cancer since I started drinking green tea.
*wink* - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, give up soda and drink tea and you will lose plenty of weight. I'm drinking a warm cup of green tea right now!
- arrrgh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0skunkhair: I don't think you read it closely enough...

"New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo." - dynomyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is good stuff, and perhaps if you like green tea, you may like Rooibos tea... check it out sometime.
++Dugg - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mt dew has a lot of sugar and calories?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- geomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They even say stevia is bad for you. Mind you, the Japanese have been using stevia for ages as it has better health benefits."
Yeah, to hell with double-blind studies and all. That is just too scientific and euro-centric.
If it has been used for hundreds of years in the Orient, it must be good. Grind me up a cup of rhino horn. - dmbrooking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll also recommend www.uptontea.com... They are who I get all my stuff through. Good guys.
- :::zak:::, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is better than coke.
FUZE makes a green tea with orange blossom honey.
call me a *****, but it's reaaaal tasty.
+digg - PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tech-stacular! ;)
Tea is an acquired taste for nearly everone in the U.S. It's all about freshly-ground premium coffee beans in a French-press or plunger-pot for me...otherwise it's a good strong beer. ;) - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I love the stuff. I lost weight while drinking it too, but thats because it took the place of Mountain Dew which has a metric ass ton of calories and sugar.
- NexFlamma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"preventation"?
What the hell? - macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'preventation'. 'preventation'? Could you use that in a sentence, please?"
Sure... President Bush favors the preventation of terrorism.
I love green tea, but make mine iced please. I shop at:
http://shopstashtea.com/teaiced.html
They sell other hot teas and stuff, but they seem to have the best value for good iced teas. I usually make a pitcher with 1 bag and just a little honey. It's easy, fast, and not too expensive. - Blanko1324, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont really like green tea. I drink Earl Grey tea. Do other teas have the same benefits as green tea?
- kiwimonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When is Kevin Rose gonna make the official digg logo a Bag of Tea?
- shade73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like www.teavana.com. Everything's going to kill me, so I'm just going to enjoy what I enjoy. screw America's Daily "Oh now this is gonna kill me!"
- landphil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had cancer before, so I am drinking green tea hoping it will offset my pot brownie habit, hahahaha.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Why would you lose weight by drinking green tea? Sounds like the result of a poison. Only our Western World skew on calories are bad would make that seem like a good thing. Food is fuel.
As for the polyphenol they may help you in some way, better than polyphenols in wine, whose effect is probably ruined by carcinogenic ethyl alcohol.
I've heard regular everyday tea is hard to find in the US grocery stores. Most people in the US think "iced tea" when they hear the word tea. - geomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When is Kevin Rose gonna make the official digg logo a Bag of Tea?"
Or maybe a tea bagger? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Green Tea is very bad for you, in fact all Chinese herbal medicine are bad for your health. because the high concentration of heavy metal elements in them. You may feel energized or whatever, but don't be fooled, it's a sign of poisoning. You will develop serious medical problems if you take them for a long time.
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg needs to add a "Not Tech Related" option to the problem reporting list. This is nuts.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My green tea can add all the metals it wants. Hell, all the scotch is killing my liver anyway. Not to mention the cheese that cloging my arteries solid. I'm with shade73 on this one.
- Decus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll stick to my pink tea
- dailyclerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with ugm. Also, they do have non tech related sections. look to your right. This was dugg under the science section.
Try the long island strawberry. http://www.psteas.com/product_info.php?products_id=140
There are also many articles about tea and its many benefits.
http://www.psteas.com/teanfo.php - d2ncal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with frosted. Drink a glass of warm water every 2 hours and you will feel better.
- kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Black tea for me thanks.

I still enjoy the occasional good coffee, but the world of tea is vast(!) - rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0'preventation'. 'preventation'? Could you use that in a sentence, please?
- Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the article doesn't mention anything about weight loss. it's been proven to help with weight loss. I've lost 5 pounds ever since i started drinking it. great stuff.
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"for those who would become tea-snobs: http://www.imperialtea.com/"
wholy crap, that cost more than weed - papercut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey,
I live in Taiwan and I'm an EBay vendor of fine Oolong teas. I can get you the freshest Oolong tea on the planet, direct from the farmer. Winter tea just came in a few days ago and I provide it to you at below US prices (and yes that includes shipping). Uptontea is great, but I have better product (Taiwan Oolong) at better prices. I'll have competition tea at the end of December. Some studies show that Green Oolongs are healthier than green tea due to the fact that the light fermenting implants higher fat burning qualities and it is less irritating on the stomach.
So, why don't you help yourself out, and help a brother out and get yourself some Oolong tea.
