- AriaStar, on 12/05/2007, -0/+56Part of me wants to say that these girls may help break the gender mold that guys are better at math and science and tech stuff (which were always VERY strong points with me), but at the same time, keeping track of the first female/black/latino/etc. just adds so much to a sense of competition between gender and race, a form of segregation.
When it's said a girl can't be as good at this or that puts everyone at a disadvantage: girls think they can't do it, so don't try, and guys feel an added sense of pressure to excel and shame if a girl does better. Any sort of generalization based on gender and race belittles the abilities of people in general. - dillyhoo, on 12/05/2007, -5/+48...aaaand cue the dismissive, derogatory comments about kitchens and sandwiches...
- dillyhoo, on 12/05/2007, -3/+42You can bitch any time you please, all that happens is you just look like a whiny bitch.
- scrimaxinc, on 12/05/2007, -2/+36Lois: Good, I don’t have to cook.
Peter: Oh, no, go ahead and cook anyway, Lois, and we’ll throw it out. I don’t want you to get rusty. - brentinkc, on 12/05/2007, -12/+44How long does this type of stuff (affirmative action and the related) have to happen before I, as a white male, can start bitching about oppression?

- dillyhoo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20I'm sure it never gets old at Siemens HQ.
- sotopheavy, on 12/05/2007, -2/+21I thought it was funny. I'm proud of them though. They won in Math, Science, Technology and definitely in Anatomy.
- Error601, on 12/05/2007, -7/+26Makes sense. Judging by digg, the teenage boys think bashing religion is science.
- novask, on 12/05/2007, -1/+20"both 17 ... creating a molecule that helps block the reproduction of drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria."
This makes me feel so useless right now. When I was 17 all I did was smoke pot and hit the gym on occasion. - spidamonkey, on 12/05/2007, -4/+22Man the Onion is hilarious, oh wait this is real?
- underthewether, on 12/05/2007, -3/+19I hate the girls are at a disadvantage in math and science class/boys are better argument. When will people realize that the reason more women don't go into math and science is that on average women are less interested in math and science. It has nothing to do with one gender being smarter than the other; it's just that one gender for whatever reason has more of a preference for one area of study. It's goes the same the other way where girls typically score better on verbal and language tests than boys. Even when women do go into science they are usually in certain areas. When I was in school most of the female engineering students were in the biomedical area, while hardly any were in my electrical engineering classes.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13Can't and won't are two different things, numb nuts.
- Kenzan, on 12/05/2007, -3/+15Girl Power?
Is it 1998? - dillyhoo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+11Given its bone growth is similar to a human's, it could probably be used to study Osteosarcoma tumors.
- OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 12/05/2007, -3/+12sudo make me a sandwich
- markperia, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9I thought they already made history with that one video that I saw that I wish I didnt...
- SammyJr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9I work in a research lab and its 50/50 males/females among the actual scientists. The idea that women aren't involved in the sciences is stupid.
- Julolidine, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9This is unsurprising. I work at a University in the Biology dept. Approximately 70% of the Ph.D.s and Postdocs are women. The ratios are still tilted towards guys in Physics, and about equal in Chemistry, but its changing drastically in those as well.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+10See, the problem is, people already have these perceptions. You have to announce first female/black/latino/whatever because there are still too many people out there who very firmly believe that females/blacks/latinos/whatever can't do these things. I understand what you're getting at, though.
- bobartig, on 12/05/2007, -4/+11..erm.. this girl needs to get into the kitchen and make me a sandwich? And with her mega intelligence, it better be the best damned sandwich in the world!
- RedReplicant, on 12/05/2007, -3/+10How is winning a science competition at all related to affirmative action?
- Ramble, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6I'd say science is pretty good for female opportunities, I'd say it's about 50/50 male/female where I am.
Maths on the other hand is a sausage fest, which is a real shame because it's the most creative of all the subjects, and I for one would like to see more women in maths. - GfunkGbuss, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6Although they used math in the show, same idea:
"A girl answered a science question! Do you know what that means, kids? SHE'S A WITCH!" - Ascus, on 12/05/2007, -1/+7To give your kids advantages is why you work hard. Sucks to be the kid of an underachiever, you will have to work harder. Best you can do is work to get it so your kids have advantages.
- kushed, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6did they HAVE TO mention that this years winners were females? Science knows no sex (no pun intended)
- Y0tsuya, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Girls can do science, but they gravitate toward the "soft" disciplines such as biology and o-chem, as evidenced by the winning projects. Guys dominate physics and engineering, the "hard" stuff.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Excellence Knows No Gender
- phre3k187, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5they better work together and invent something that helps them make men sandwiches better and faster
- endersadvocate, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5dude people that win these like ridiculous 50k scholarships probably devote all of their free time to their projects
that's a no - ostracize, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Yes! It is!
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.2 ... - jmaxwell, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5The team prize went for chemistry and the individual prize went for biology. Not exactly in fields requiring solid Math.
The FALSE perception is not that girls can't do science; its that girls can't do Math (and ergo any field heavily dependent on it - physics, comp sci, etc.).
Again, I think this total BS. Its not that girls CAN'T do it. It is that girls DON'T do it. - bobartig, on 12/05/2007, -3/+7er, how about the brain chemistry that tends to make males more spatially oriented and better at abstract reasoning? You can even give women more "male" hormones, and men "female" hormones - the result is that we cry more, and the women build bridges.
It's not a 'disadvantage argument', its a statistically significant factor with some biological origins. - jmpeagle, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3why don't you have a seat right over there...
- verkon, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Look up
- reinadehielo, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Wow, it's about time! Still, I'm proud of those girls for being the first, of many... :-)
- Y0tsuya, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3When I was in engineering school there were so few women in EE dept that whenever I see a female I always had the nagging suspicion that she's actually a dude.
- hysterix, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3People get scared when they realize that there are biological differences between males and females, blacks, whites, latinos, asians etc. They can't accept it. They want to live in a universe where we are all clones of each other and have no differences.
- HonestAbe, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Equality power?
- scrimaxinc, on 12/05/2007, -3/+5Here's a completely unrelated fun fact - The girl in the picture went to the same high school as Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -4/+6It's too bad you can't get laid. Not surprising, though.
- chuuch, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Wow, I am very aware of the fact that Siemens acquired Westinghouse years ago, but it is extremely weird to not see this called the Westinghouse Competition
- hysterix, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3After all your incoherent blathering, I would like to point out to you that the reason you suck at math (algebra/geometry) is because, and you said it yourself, "I ... lack patience." It is not that your brain is "big picture focused" whatever the hell that even means! It means you don't want to learn it; the idea that your brain is magically incapable or has difficulty learning certain math, is not only laughable but an insult to science itself!
Also, might I add, I hope you don't think you are 'good' at the subject of English. Judging from your paragraph, you suck at school in general, not just math. - dubbleenerd, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2dugg for the desi girl in the individual category! :P
- sindex, on 12/05/2007, -2/+4So, girls answered a science question? You know what that means... WITCHES!
- netant, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2You don't need world class lab access to win the science fair, but sure as hell you're not going to be able to compete without a parent in the field, or a private education.
