- MrVictor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Inaccurate title. The Dana Octopus Squid (taningia danae) are from an entirely different family of squid than that of the giant squid.
- halfnormalform, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31I wonder what else we'll discover one day in the depths of the ocean.

"you know crabpeople? look like crabs. talk like people." - nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Ooh. They come with lights!, All the better for tentacle porn!
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12a drain, which we'd be better off if we didn't pull... but the temptation will be too much.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think the confusion is from their last name being "squid." Their mailman Gil is constantly mixing up their mail as well, although it might be on porpoise.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14On almost a daily basis, I'm amazed by some new discovery that makes me appreciate what we *don't* know. I can't imagine what wonderful things we'll discover before my time is up. At 21, hopefully I have plenty of time left. ;-)
On that note, this was a wonderful piece by Wired: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.02/bigquestions.html - trustrsx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The video was worthless. Don't bother with it.
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12An illuminated squid. Eat your heart out, Adam Weishaupt.
- rshu4you, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9IT'S A LITE BRIGHT BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I always thought my squid flashed light because he liked me. But now I know he hates me :-(
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember when I was a kid and pictures of old maps that had parts of the oceans labeled "Here Be Monsters". I would laugh and think the mapmakers were pretty stupid. After seeing this, I just want to say "I'm sorry".
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6win media player or real = sans video

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Weishaupt - phej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When will sites stop using the spyware that is Real Player?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They also have been known to attack and kill local fisherman.
- AMSRay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Hail Atlanta!" (with a nod to Futurama)
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is water at the bottom of the ocean.
- David Byrne, oceanographer extraordinaire - kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The video requires Media player or Real player. That's pretty lame and I won't be seeing the video.
- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5OK, what scares me is all the rare things that have been coming up from the deep lately. Like in the last few weeks. Is it environmental?
No I'm not a tree hugger trying to start *****. Just a thought I had. ;) - radcopter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Imagine that thing coming at you out of the dark. I'd crap my deep-sea dive suit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Squids emiting light? The obvious next step is sharks with lasers.
- 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6We Crabpeople type like regular people too ...
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dat ain't no giant squid, foo.
- antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_squid
"This species was first discovered in 1925, in the form of two tentacles found in the stomach of a sperm whale."
"In 1981, a Russian trawler in the Ross Sea, off the coast of Antarctica, caught a large squid ... with a total length of 4 meters (13 feet), which was later identified as an immature female of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni."
"On June 25, 2005, a specimen was captured at a depth of 1625 meters while taking a toothfish from a longline off South Georgia Island. Although the mantle was not brought aboard, the mantle length was estimated at over 2.5 m, and the tentacles measured 230 centimeters. The animal is thought to have weighed between 150 and 200 kilograms."
so regarding your exclaiming question... yes - antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, this always happens in the news.
When one story generates traffic, people jump on the bandwagon and either post things that are widely known throughout that specific industry or generate "loosely" sourced stories on the same topic. Once you realize this you will notice it all over the place. Kidnappings, murders, discoveries... it's marketing. - m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was going to comment on the same thing. The posting is inaccurate, even though the article/video is still fascinating.
- childprey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hopefully one never shows up near Boston...
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9It's giant, and it's a squid. It's a giant squid.
- bentheo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4thank you. i saw the title thought the same thing.
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You almost got it this time. Keep trying.
- rshu4you, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ummm, RTA, this was filmed in 2005.
- Dotmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Youtube link anyone?
- DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Merr, thanks for that Wired link. Very interesting.

Use Real Alternative. It only installs the codecs you need, no spyware/system-takeover.

There's also a Quicktime Alternative... death to proprietary media formats! - ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Tien's Solarflare is still better.
- dmason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone seen the video in flash? No WMP in Linux and would like to avoid Real Player...
- randyrandall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't even see a flash..?
- hotsake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Cthulh....who?
- dain524, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just what I thought when I saw the headline.....still laughing uncontrollably.
We are serious about this, we are only answering hair questions today. - SLP1111, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wtf? The page has a diagram on it showing size comparisons and there is a 'Colossal' Squid?!
- TheTinman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone remember that (I think) NBC mini-series about the giant squid?
That was my second favorite mini-series of all-time (behind The Langoliers). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree, there were no light flashes to be seen
- BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gotta love Taningia.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the coolest thing ever!!! Squids with frickin' lasers attached! Doctor Evil would be proud.
That and I've just always thought giant squids were awesome, now just more reasons to love. - Flummoxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That explains why I remember this from that IMAX movie with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet...
- oldJimSteele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that video is terrifying.
