- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+26I'm pretty certain it's not low gravity, earth's mass have been relatively the same for a while now. I believe its the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, more oxygen allows animals with bigger size, while smaller amount of oxygen will produce smaller animals.
And as for flying, if we can get a Boeing 747 to fly, I'm sure nature will have no problem providing a few hundred pounds bird flight. - Nephersir7, on 09/27/2008, -6/+31So, that´s what life was like before someon invented Jesus?
- jetboyterp, on 09/27/2008, -2/+26Imagine THAT crapping on your windshield...
- chrissku, on 09/27/2008, -0/+20It's hard to believe that these birds were alive before God had a chance to create them. I bet that pisses God off.
- joe8pack, on 09/26/2008, -8/+28Anybody done any calculations to figure out if these birds could actually fly, based on their weight, muscle mass and current standard gravity field?
I've heard some curious theories that pre k/t boundary animals may have existed in a lower gravity environment, hence their ability to grow to massive size and still function normally. Seems if evolution favored massive size animals once, they would have repopulated the earth, rather than mostly smaller animals as currently inhabit this realm, with the odd large animal such as the current elephant, dwarfed in comparison to the dinosaurs.
Is body size a function of gravity? Can gravity vary, and if so how? These are questions that paleontologists, biologists and physicists should get together and examine. Science should not be a prison, but rather a construct to test ideas and discard dogma that doesn't work when new evidence is revealed. Difficult to do in a realm where careers are destroyed if you stray off the beaten path. - tehxen3, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14Age of Machines?
- Conky, on 09/27/2008, -1/+14Sarah Palin calls BS on this, 50 million years ago, lol. The whole world is only 6000 years old... right?
- geologist62, on 09/27/2008, -0/+13I am a Geologist and can tell you right off that It has nothing to do with fluctuating gravity fields. Oxygen levels however did fluctuate and some animals took advantage of that and grew larger. However, these giant geese relied on aerodynamics and lift to get airborne; the same way B-52 bombers and C-5As get off the ground, these giant geese had longer and wider wings that could generate the required lift. They were probably more like gliders than flappers and they definitely would need time to get off the ground/water making them an easy snack for lurking predators. Having teeth, would allow them to skim over the water's surface to snatch their meal in while in mid flight.

- shadowkiller137, on 09/27/2008, -0/+9I have heard that it was actually due to a higher atmospheric density

- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+9If you are standing at the same spot 50 million years ago, you will probably weight the same up to a thousandth of a gram. 50 million years of collecting cosmic dusts makes almost no impact on earth's gravitational pull.

That's the sound a goose makes. - Fleminator, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5There have been bigger flying animals. :D

- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4Pre-FLOOD.... no such thing as Pre-historic
These types of giants were around BEFORE the FLOOD!! Once a so-called "scientist" throws God's Word out the door... anything goes. 50 million, 100 million, 300 million... Just like politicians What's a few hundred millions when it's ALL guess work based on REJECTING the Truth of God - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -4/+8Masaks, your one of those close minded atheists kinds that ends up destroying science more than advancing it.
- mllawso, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4Jesus "Rising up into heaven." is a mistranslation: he rode one of these giant geese.

- killerknives, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2and somewhere along the line they thought it would be better to get smaller??? goddamnit evolution!
- JLSN, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Don't tell Caribou Barbie about this. She is holding onto the idea that the Earth is only 6000 years old, and fossils are fake.

- jawagas, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2haha, yup evolution changed its mind and turn the car around.
- MJG2007, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2But did it make for good pate? And how many goose down comforters could one make out of it?
- forcedfx, on 09/27/2008, -1/+3About 5 meters. What's that, like 5 scales? Non-Americans ...
- furcifex, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Someone mentioned it earlier, but I believe that part of the reason why you could get larger flying animals "back in the day" was that atmospheric pressure and density was much greater... I heard in a class that it used to be around 3 atmospheres. In addition to increasing the buoyant force, I'd imagine that this would increase the amount of lift you could generate. The increased oxygen was necessary for things like giant dragonflies. Birds are more efficient than mammals at exchanging and moving around gas, so I'm not sure if that would have been as big of a factor for them, though I'm sure it didn't hurt.
