That guy must have some really big feet! - Malcx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+37Anyone else feel slightly let down?
When I read about Giant Squid I want to see something big enough to take on an aircraft carrier!!! - Phearce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14550 lbs squid, cleaned and cut into strips
8.5 gallons olive oil
34 3/8 cups parsley, chopped
68 3/4 gallons tomato, crushed
17 gallons red wine

Heat oil in sauce *LARGE* pan. Brown garlic/add squid, and saute about 10 minutes/add salt, pepper, and wine, and cook about 10 minutes more/add tomatoes, and parsley, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes - secretwhistle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Whopper?!?! Spare me your scientific mumbo-jumbo.
- gwjc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14That's a lotta calamari.
- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11So for hundreds of years these things were just a legend from old sea dog tales, with little evidence to ever prove their existence. Now they're finding them every 6 months or so, what's up with that?
- DrDragun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I was wondering where Rosie ODonnel was, she's been out of the headlines lately
- trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11That or Australia has some really short buses for some really special people.
- python2121, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Considering the size of the boot in the picture, that squid doesn't look like it could weigh 550lbs
- Speedy7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11That isnt a squid, its a space station!
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Spam, quoting a word that was never used, signing your name at the bottom despite the fact it says your name at the top of your post, unrelated, unattributed, and indecipherable quote.
Yeah, that's a digg down right there. - Akaji, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Definitely a bury + block.
- seriouslysean, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8"For anyone thinking of a calamari feast, Walker-Smith said giant squid contain high levels of ammonia in their bodies as a buoyancy aid.
"It would not taste very nice at all," she said." - trongod05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's too big to be a space station.
- underthelinux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4& report!
- crushfan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Will it blend?
- Octanum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No, no, officials said that it's a whopper.

- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I for one... eh, *****.
- edtoyoh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Could this be another sign of global warming?
- BLyn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wait... did they actually weigh it?
- TheNapalm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Its not that they are miraculously finding them every six months, they just know more about them now like the fact that they only live in a particular part of the world and that they are near sperm whales.
Maybe they are just appearing because of the publicity of Pirates now that Davy Jones is in fashion. - mabba18, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes, why are they all appearing now? Change in habitat? Change in ocean temperature/currents? It just goes to show how little humans understand the natural world and their effect of it.
- DanH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that picture is definitely not of a squid "as long as a bus"
- MrLeEx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wow, something @ the beach? seriously, the locals here would just look at it and go "cool", and keep surfing :P
- mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1whats funny is we found plankton one of the tiniest things in the ocean years ago, and a picture of a live giant squid just four years ago.
- Webwonk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's one for Friday Squid Blogging!
- Desolite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"as long as a bus" is a terrible way to describe the length of a squid because when you think of a bus, you think of something with a lot of size, or diameter in a squid's case, which obviously isn't a good representation. "as long as a bus" makes me think that the squid is that large - before even getting to the tentacles. but a squid's tentacles are much longer than its main body to begin with so you end up with, well, the picture that you see here. wouldn't it be better to describe it as it should be? maybe, as long as a telephone pole or even just the straight up length - 8 meters? i get tired of clicking on sensationalist titles only to be disappointed because i'm a realist at heart.
/rant - dsignr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2With all that ammonia.... it'll taste like bleached calamari.
- linksus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lol i feel short changed!
who do i see to get my 1 minute back.. - rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1tell me about it. I read this news yesterday too and everyone mentioned that the squid was as large a a Bus. wtf it looks tiny as hell. Please add a buried as Disappointed option.
- xpacerx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was excited till i saw the guys boots in the pic. that should just be classified as a heavy squid not a giant one. That sucks, there never as big as in the movies.
- heresy_fnord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Time for sammiches!
- datastorageguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As long as a short bus. I am sure most of you know exactly how long that is.
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or has there be a whole lot of giant squid washing up on beaches lately? Dam global warming?
- esbern1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1not thats not true at all. squid have been photographed and studied by a guy who runs a squid geek forum called tonmo.com. he gets giant squid all the time.....the first giant squid that was alive was photographed in 2005.
- evensong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More are dying?
- themanmachine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1then let's feed half of africa
- mentol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Are the guys sure that's an 8 meter long squid?
I don't think so!! Maybe like 3-4m or so (at least that's what I can see comparing the boots I see in the picture) - Yousty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1haha, funny you mention that cuz this was just on the front page of digg yesterday
- Impact0115, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hey wow, that's as huge as the OTHER Giant Squid I saw on Digg.com yesterday from the same exact article yet posted by a different user!
Redundant. - celebrichy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0How much does it cost? :D
- Travisx2, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6I know some of you get your news exclusively from Digg, but the rest of the world has seen this.
