You haven't seen Baltimore. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9We've confirmed that life is a pretty resilient thing - and can occur in some of the harshest possible habitats... so this shouldn't really be surprising in that respect. It just helps to expand our understanding of where life could possibly exist when searching for it outside of our world.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, I myself believe that there could definetly be life out there SOMEWHERE.
The Universe is too big for just one planet full of life forms. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Its amazing that life can exist in such a place.
- Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7None of the 'regular' members know for sure but most people think it's amount of Diggs within alotted amount of time... The staff won't say and for good reason. If it was clearly known then it could be exploited very easily...
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ancient secret, they could tell you but then they'd have to kill you.
- cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hydrogen Sulfide is a pretty decent terminal electron acceptor (as is Oxygen).
You gotta remember that life went on for 3 billion years without Oxygen... and Oxygen is pretty nasty stuff. I'm more amazed that life adapted to Oxygen, myself.
P.S. The current level of Oxygen in the atmosphere is abnormally high. Dinosaurs (birds) did so well because they handle Oxygen much more efficiently than other land animals, like mammals. Standing at sea level in the Triassic would be like standing on Mt. Everest today. - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does that mean we need to kill all the trees so we dont end up with too much oxygen?
- Doggpound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very cool but I why would they not have more pictures???
- liveinabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The little organisms that thrive around these vents have the BEST name (deep breath)..
Chemolythoautotrophic Hyperthermophiles
:) - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The descending water is likely bringing shrimp to the eels,"
Meals on Wheels, for eels! lol - jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sorry to continue off topic but Jolene's explanation would make sense but it doesn't add up. When I wrote my first comment this story only had 31 diggs and was on the front page after being submitted more than 8 hours ago. At the same time this was on the front page with only 31 diggs another story which had been submitted less than 4 hours ago had 41 diggs but is still had not moved to front page. I wish they could address how this could be possible with out giving away all the details.
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Moat of Death" --> +Digg .
No exceptions! - jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How do digg stories go to front page? When I am writing this the time that this was submitted is given as 8 hours ago and 41 minutes. At this time other items have been submitted less time ago and have more diggs but don't wind up on front page. What gives?
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1page has been dugged. wont load.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one that can't get it to load? We seriously couldn't have killed the National Geographic site.
- ChuyMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Room with a view of HELL!!! [Mote] of Death! Staircase of SATin!"
Someone on the exploration team was an Eddie Izzard fan...
I just love that some scientists can not think that, with all we know, that there has to be SO much more that we don't. Who was it in the early 1900s in the senate that said: "we have invented it all!" and called for the closure of the patent office? anyway, there will always be more. - lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds to me like a perfect evil lair.......lol......
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, how could any one of us really know if you are infact the only one who can't get it to load? j/k
The site is super slow...and if you click on the photo in hopes of enlarging, you're in a for a cruel joke. I hate when sites have thumbnails that are equal or near equal to the 'enlarged' size. - raceoftime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What lost island? I know for a fact that they use Oahu to film their sets. I live in Oahu, I should know.
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's like an all you can eat shrimp buffet for the eel! =D
- penguinboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Beneath the waves of the South Pacific lies a volcanic realm nearly as strange as that featured in TV's hit drama Lost."
I love how the just happened to mention Lost. I mean really, what does this story have to do with Lost? Is this some SEO trick - throw the name of something popular in your article and someone might search for it? I don't know, maybe the writer knows about a mysterious underwater volcano thats going to show up in next weeks episodes. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>>"The volcano is also spewing liquid carbon dioxide, which combines with seawater to make a deadly acidic mix.
And the same currents that bring shrimp to the eels also bring fish into the toxic moat, trapping them. ...
...But one species survives within the moat, a type of sea worm that seems to be feeding on the animal carcasses. "
At last, another lifeform that like to drink soda!
Fish-flavored soda. ...with added iron. - cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why no pictures?
Probably too dark, and too cloudy.
When the metal rich water hits Hydrogen Sulfide, it makes clumps of black crud which swirl around. Even if you had a decent strobe setup, it wouldn't penetrate the crud. - cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW, the title of the article is misleading- the seamount has been under study for over 20 years. It has not been recently 'found'.
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn interesting, theres some weird stuff at the bottom of the Oceans it really fascinates me. Like big zooplankton and funny jellyfish and stuff.
Nice article Digg+ - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's probably just a big LOST fan... As a LOST fan myself, I can't read this story without noticing this volcano is located in the same area of the South Pacific that the LOST island is supposedly located.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Diggowned
- jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Still doesn't add up although I like the logic of captaindan regarding log-in theory. The item which had more diggs in less time yet remains unprompted has little reason to attract fake diggs. I think the reason it doesn't add up is because digg is less democratic than it wants you to believe it is...the digg conspiracy!
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Uhh what does that URL have to do with discoveries?
- mikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My hovercraft is full of eels!"
- winterzdrama, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0Amazing great!!
Regards
http://www.epdrama.com Webmaster - spurton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the little environmental jab at the end "As levels of carbon dioxide continue to rise, due to the combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation, and other causes, much of the gas will inevitably wind up in the sea, he explained." geesh!
- at0ms0ft, on 07/06/2008, -0/+0They better get going on those studies. Cause its prolly gonna happen sooner than that. And that would be dope if they dig in there and there is like one huge EEL queen. Just saying.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not to sure how the digg front page promotion system works but thats a pretty killer article. Our world isn't so small when you consider stuff like this that has never been discovered!!!
Jeff - http://jeffeh.com - captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2As I mentioned in another story, it makes more sense for the formula to be:
number of diggs / number of people logged in / specific timeframe
The number of diggs alone isn't meaningful without considering how many potential diggs there were (the number of people logged in). The result is that instead of requiring a certain number of diggs to make the front page, a story needs to be dugg by a certain percentage of the logged in users.
And, as I also mentioned in that other story, I think it's useless to try to figure it out. Digg the stories that you like. Leave the rest to digg's staff. - hammy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1410 diggs and this is on the front page? WHAT THE *****?
- waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's been officially mentioned that the category, site activity, and the poster's past history of getting stories to the front page matter as well.
- Yoyimbo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Digg it!
What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
