- anymir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Bitching about how this isn't technology related isn't going to do anything. If you don't like the story, report it.
- jayred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For all those saying this isn't tech related, look at the category: SCIENCE. All science has something to do with technology whether directly or indirectly.
- Dagur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so how do I set the timer? I don't know how long it will take me to fall asleep
- theDrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds like good advice for every single college student...they should come up with the "study nap"
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i only wish this article had a works cited.
- skooma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I have been power napping in my truck on my daily lunch break for about 5yrs now.
Everything the article says is true, and yes, it is hard to wake yourself at first.
however, with training in self control you can induce a very restful sleep AND wake yourself from it in less than 30 mins.
The result makes me feel like Ive just started a brand new day when its only lunch time, and
before you know it, it's time to go home.
When I get home I'm not as tired, to boot.
The only downside to this and no one talks about in these power napping articles is, you can seriously become addicted to these naps and become cranky if you don't get to take them daily.
This crankiness can be overcome as well and is more of an exercise in maturity. I mean c'mon, a grown-ass man shouldn't be cranky at 1pm on a wednesday cuz he didn't get hims wittle nappy. - SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, definitely good to know.
- Draje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good info to know
- hooges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting article

- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for the story
- BubbleBobble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry I'm wrong about the number of publications. She's listed with different initials apparently:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed - kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very useful information. i'll be sure to use these power naps...
for those wondering why this is on digg:
study of sleep = somnology = science - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"err this is tech related how?
I think Digg.com is turning into a universal news site, I wonder what Alex or Kevin think of this, personally I think they should embrace the idea."
good god give it a rest. did you not see the interview a while back with marketwatch. http://digg.com/links/Digg_on_Marketwatch_ - ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very interesting. I'm sick of everyone complaining about whether or not it's "tech related".. I think digg should change its focus to tech/universal news
- J.Hepburn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its under "science" and as some of you may know science encompasses more than just technology. Stop Bitching.
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been under a polyphasic sleep state for a couple years now.
Getting the perfect nap. - slicerace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Affect not effect.
- y0435606, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great article. i'm an athlete who trains twice a day so dis is going to help. zzzzzz..................
- NuttySquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what's a naper? Digg has spellcheck.
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now only if it did not take me forever to fall asleep
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0excellent article. really good digg.
- gloc9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never tried the 50-90 minute nap, but i can say that the 2-5 and the 5-20 minutes nap works. I have utilized it for quite some time now. Helps when you have a short break between classes.
- dr00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just woke from a deathly mid afternoon sleep...limbs concrete, cannot think... feel like utter *****.
good luck to all those nappers - Imaiden22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well i don't know about switching digg to universal news, but stuff like this is always nice to know...i mean it got blogged by me...as for digg, stay tech focused, but this USEFUL info is nice to have once in a while..
++digg - timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Recognize that you're not being lazy"
I like that one. - BubbleBobble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the above comments on the "not-tech related" whining. Stop it please.
Regarding the article: be careful about any wishful thinking here. The "expert" mentions she's writing a book, but she has only one (!) scientific publication on naps.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12032542&query_hl=4&itool=pubmed_docsum - jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If napping is good for the body then I'm the healthiest man alive!
- fergytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great!! I'm going to take a NAP right now. :D
- closetnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm dozing off reading all these comments about bad grammar and universal news...
- gman341, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Affect not effect." - Thats what i was affraid of. Thanks Kamizu, thats exactly why it was posted.
- jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. You managed to cram one misspelling and one grammatical error into only one sentence. I believe it is spelled "napper" and not "naper," and it is "affect you" not "effect you."
- jccj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sware by the powernap!
(-_-)ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - drycounty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+020-minute powernaps rule for me, anything too much longer and I can get very groggy. BTW, side one of Brian Eno's "Discreet Music" is just about the perfect thing to listen to at low volume. Takes some time to get used to, but incredibly effective!
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*YAWN* I need a nap.
- Rirath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can barely sleep on command much less nap on command. 2-5 minute naps? The only time I could do that on command would be right after hitting the snooze button in the morning. 20 minutes sounds good, but in the off chance I could sleep, I'm sure it'd take at least 30 just to fall asleep.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been doing this since college, and it works great.
- kwoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I was in college, after taking Psych 101 where you learn about sleep cycles, I had it down to a science how much I'd sleep. It had to be a multiple of 1.5 hours, plus an additional 30 minutes at the beginning to account for the time it took to get to sleep. So for example, 3.5 hours, 5, 6.5, or 7.5-8 (cycles are shorter the longer you sleep, I think I'd wake up oftentimes a couple minutes before the alarm went off and practically spring out of bed. Nowadays, though,
I can barely get out of bed. Don't know what happened, other than
"getting older". - dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sleep who can find time for sleeping or napping?
I have to digg every second of the day!!! - HiddenS3crets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now I have an exuse to use at school!
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So I went back to my trailer and took myself a tasty nap"
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds cool, but even if I'm beat tired, it takes me an hour to get to sleep.
- Ace2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be able to wake up after 20mins if i start to power nap
- Niloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting article. And yes, I like the "Recognize that you're not being lazy" part.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will always digg anything about naps.
- mathew_bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting article, one of the best around!
Digg for sure. - Mjhavok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully this will help me on many an insomniac night.
- techvivek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting article !!!
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just read this and tried it out, had a nice 20 minute nap, feel nice and refershed now, I actually managed to get to sleep which I was quite surprised about
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just tried that and when I awoke, EVERYTHING in my office was stolen and replaced with exact duplicates!
