Each year, about 310,000 Taiwanese 16- and 17-year-olds sit a high-stakes exam that determines whether they will go to a prestigious public senior high school or more middling private and vocational schools.

So, in Taiwan, the private schools are "middling" but the public schools are prestigious? Our public school administrators need to find out what they're doing, and do that. - rainydayraider, on 09/25/2009, -0/+10That's a terrible rule
- bipolarruledout, on 09/25/2009, -0/+10No, most of you fail on this one despite the irony. Grades are a human construct and this shows that whatever testing paradigm is in use is flawed as it's obviously not working as designed for the entire sample size. That's not the "fault" of the student.
- sputnikv, on 09/25/2009, -0/+9have anxiety and mental illness? there's an app for that
- greentable, on 09/25/2009, -2/+9Or... smoke pot to smoke pot. Yeah!!!!
- Amadeus2490, on 09/25/2009, -0/+6THC is known to cause panic attacks in people who're naturally prone to anxiety. If you're paranoid, don't smoke pot. if you're depressed, don't drink alcohol.
- bukiyou, on 09/25/2009, -0/+5asians love being cheapskates.
in a typical school in asia, students are generally obedient. In north america, private schools are considered generally better because they have enrollment policies in order to control the learning environment. in my high school, it was pretty easy to become a partier and pot-head because there was a very strong influence from all the cool and sexy people doing it. Students in asia tend to stay away from drugs and alcohol until they get into university because their future and prosperity really rides on academic performance. - Sornos, on 09/25/2009, -0/+5There are always casualties when it comes to optimizing the system for as many people as possible.
What about the people that excel under pressure?
Nothing ever works for the entire sample size when humans are involved. - SpazAttack5000, on 09/25/2009, -2/+6Sounds kind of like me, borderline genius who sucked in school.
- OrangeRevel, on 09/25/2009, -4/+8People who are prone to mental illness shouldn't use psychoactive drugs like pot. It can unlock mental illnesses like schizophrenia in some people. I've personally known two people genetically prone to schizophrenia who became permanently mentally ill after smoking pot. I'm not saying that this happens to a lot of people, but it does happen to some.
- atomic811, on 09/25/2009, -1/+5Yes I had massive panic attacks on pot. I don't smoke it at all. Not worth the hell. However if it makes you feel good, smoke up.
- Mujokan, on 09/25/2009, -1/+4It's about 50% heritable, but "race" has nothing to do with it.
- inactive, on 09/25/2009, -1/+3Woah. Deep.
- Nirgaul, on 09/25/2009, -0/+2Look up how Einstein preyed off of Kurt Gödel's test anxiety!
- MacBookForMe, on 09/24/2009, -3/+5That is how our society works, isn't it?
- rocknog, on 09/25/2009, -0/+2Correlation does not equal causation. You could just as equally say that having the genes for schizophrenia makes one more prone to smoke pot. People seem to not realize that with schizophrenia, the symptoms generally don't materialize until adulthood. So, the scenario could be, you have a teenager, just barely starting to develop symptoms, but they aren't really noticeable except that they make him more inclined to do things like smoke pot.
- Chrysalii, on 09/25/2009, -1/+3no, just illegal to mention IQ as anything other than a way to find learning disabilities, since it completely fails at being anything else, and even then it's mostly useless on it's own.
- Mujokan, on 09/25/2009, -0/+2If they were genetically prone to it, it's hard to say that they wouldn't otherwise have developed it. However, there was a study that showed that young people with a certain gene (not a gene for schizophrenia iirc) who also smoked a lot of weed increased their chances of becoming schizophrenic.
If people have schizophrenia in the family they should lay off psychoactive drugs. Also anyone who finds that they are having scary and unpleasant experiences should cut them out. Especially, persistent delusions (mistaken beliefs), auditory hallucinations of voices, a sensation of being watched or of another presence, a feeling that nothing is real, and other stuff that resembles schizophrenia. - rainydayraider, on 09/25/2009, -0/+2I feel for these kids, the thing is I always found it hard to care about grades because I was bored I wasn't anxious about pleasing my parents or proving how smart I was I was simply uneasy with other children.
- folkjoe, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1I was actually quite happy about getting good grades before I read this.
- Nirgaul, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1You don't have the MET-105 gene mutation.
- curtisag, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1I can just see the political ***** storm right now if adopted their system. A public education is seen as a right in this country. Making education a reward instead of an entitlement has many advantages though.
- FunnyData, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1I think many smart kids are bored with school and therefore do not pay attention, that is why there grades are bad. Sometimes teachers do not grade students fairly. I had people copy of me in school and they got better grades then me.
- daeus, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1This sounds about right, if you have a high IQ your thinking about things at a faster pace and it can all get to much in an exam and cloud judgement, probably has happened to anyone with anxiety in an exam on a lower scale.
- Schrodinger2, on 09/25/2009, -2/+3I thought that in this day and age it was illegal to mention IQ and genetics in the same sentence.
- Mujokan, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1My best friend when I was in school was smarter than me and always did better in assignments (we took pretty similar classes). However he had a somewhat anxious personality back then, and we always did the same in exams. I am ashamed to admit I was a little bit relieved by that. :/
- WhidbeyIsland, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1@Rocknog Where did you learn to think critically?
- kevinsname, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1@happyimbecile
Shut your HAPPY ass up, you IMBECILE. You're just jealous because you've never been invited to partys. - firebhaal, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1yea i'd have to definitely see some scientific proof of that before i believe that, im sure you know people who ate potato chips who developed schizo.
- atomic811, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1I have this gene!!!!
- kernel16, on 09/25/2009, -1/+1Oh, ya sure that's my problem, not the fact that I seldom put in the effort for a good grade.
- drunkenoaf, on 09/25/2009, -1/+1What this shows is that one type of scientist goes on a fishing expedition for a "gene for X" -- and finds some good candidates.
The thing is... there almost never is a single "gene for X". It's all so complex! Lots of subtle interplay between genes -- and it's even more complex in the brain. Don't get me wrong -- this is good journalistic copy -- but it's not surprising in science. - Swivelstick, on 09/25/2009, -1/+1"permanently mentally ill after smoking pot" Dunno where to start pot does not cause brain damage in the manner you are describing. I would also like to bet that these individuals are now taking *insert psychoactive meds of choice" which in many cases can make matters worse as the magic pill is seen as treatment far to often and good counseling rarely offered when it needs to be both. Far to many of the drugs used have horrible side effects and many of the new drugs well we wont know about for decades to come.
- Krinkov, on 09/25/2009, -2/+2explains Einstein. Look it up.
- toowired77, on 09/25/2009, -0/+0The article stated clearly that environment and other genes play a role. I really doubt that any of these scientist truly understand what intelligence is.
There are bigots in this world who will turn real science into a pseudo science to prove their master race theories. Its sad, but some things will never change. - yocouchdigga, on 09/25/2009, -3/+2Nature's a bitch like that, she giveth and she taketh away.
- lolerskate, on 09/24/2009, -5/+4Well for every strength you got to have a weakness.
- happyimbecile, on 09/25/2009, -2/+1Great, now every person who fails out of college is going to claim they just have this rather than take responsibility for their over-partying and lack of studying.
- mn3300, on 09/25/2009, -1/+0Interesting....its true what they say after all, life isnt fair! Haaaaa.
- bipolarruledout, on 09/25/2009, -2/+1Seriously? Explain how this makes since. Evidently humans were evolved for scribbling out tests now? How exactly does nature have anything to do with this?
- ryanonfire, on 09/25/2009, -3/+1Get some anti-anxiety medication what's the big deal
