  • Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+64Wow... I've finally seen a live Goblin Shark. I used to read about these when i was a kid, this was my favorite shark out of all the pictures I had in this book I used to read. I never thought I'd get to see one alive.

    All those deep sea fish are just so crazy looking. I wonder why they all look so terrifying, what is it about the dark ocean depths that causes things to evolve into creatures that we would perceive as intimidating?

  • Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -1/+29Well I know that much, but why do we as land animals find that to be intimidating? I'm thinking on an instinctual level here. If you look at a lot of monsters if films many of them share simliar features to deep ocean creatures.

    I'm thinking that it's just that life there has evolved so far from where we stand on the phylogenetic tree that it makes them so different in comparison to what we're used to which in turn makes us uneasy, similar to how very small animals can often look crazy under a microscope. Perhaps if we evolved on the bottom of the ocean too we'd be calling the Goblin shark cute and a kitten would be terrifying to us...
