- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You mean your refridgerator can't calculate Mersenne primes? Dude, it's 2006 already. Get with the times.
- rumor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9the burglar thing was priceless. you could seriously screw with someone using that speakerphone lol.
WHY DOES THE VOICE FOLLOW ME? AHHH!
lol... - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pluto is sold as a complete, turnkey appliance. However, Pluto's components are really modified PC computers inside custom cases. What makes Pluto totally remarkable is that we decided to give away all the software for free. That's right, you can make your own Pluto system using your PC computers together with our special software. It will do everything our turnkey product does, and you don't have to pay us anything.
- bristolz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Can your fridge do a load of laundry?
- pdeco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"""And if you keep your cell phone in your pocket, the mocking hacker's webcam will follow you automatically from room to room to room.
If he pushes the 'talk button,' the entire house turns into a giant speaker phone for the hacker to laugh at you.
There is no software to install or update, to security packages to protect you, and no firewall to detect and prevent intrusions.
Simplify the hacker's life with Pluto.""" - rawdog79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is a great idea and I love the concept of an integrated home. But I can see the potential for someone wreaking havoc on my sanctuary. Especially running Windows.
The last thing I need is my fridge and toaster conspiring against me at night. - punkdigerati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check out their page about the software, what you need, etc, at http://plutohome.org/
They offer it all for free and open source. It seems to be very intuitive. Probably going to try this out next time I have some free time. - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This nerd stuff (I don't mean the smart home per se, I'm refering to the "smart" title) shows how hard is for the average Joe to accept what technology really is about. Since nerds are considered a different a group of people in relation with a "normal" person shows how conservative most people are and how extreme technology gets. If technology won't make most people to become "nerds" then except a new dark age like the Medieval one. Ya know technophobia, restriction of knowledge and much more "good" stuff.
- Sesse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't see any restrooms in that house. :p
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Im just holding out for the kenmore that creates impossible objects to keep my food fresh
- harpastum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"go to personal computing in the flash demo, and keep clicking, look at the bottom middle tv... any one see the porn?"
Nope; That's just the pic from the videoconferencing section. If you want a closeup, you can go here:

but open source = digg++ - TechHerder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've used this and it's not quite ready for prime time yet. There are several other companies trying to do similar things such as Control4, AMX, ELan, Netstreams and Crestron. Although most of these solutions are far to expensive for the average person.
Pluto is developing a good backend interface, but it's going to be really important for them to develop a nice looking GUI frontend. When it comes down to it.. these systems are expected to work perfectly. Set it up once then forget about it unless you add new devices to your home. All that really matters to the end user is that it looks cool on your touch screen, and is very interactive and easy for a guest in your house to figure out.
For the homebrew crew...
My advice is build a mini linux server, install apache, php, and mysql on it, then get a bunch of global cache gc-100 boxes and a good RS-232 controllable lighting system like lutron. Put xbox media center on a few xboxes or and install them into every room. Write your GUI frontend using custom graphics in macromedia flash. Upload the SWF to your web server and poke some holes in the firewall for remote access and you have a very customizable control system for a very low cost.
Sure it's a lot of work, but it will not cost you $50,000+ like a professionally programmed Crestron/AMX system would run you.
If Pluto is reading these comments, here's a tip, you need to create a RPC server or some other remotely controlled API so that other apps such as macromedia flash, Python, or AJAX can talk to the backend and send commands and get status from all of the devices. Build a good API and the developers will come.... - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By the time I can afford a house this will be jurasic tech, but dugg anyway.
On the bright side, no matter how expensive it is, soil is worse. It's not going to destroy your budget. - VoraciousPanda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The voice over of the flash presentation is hilarious.
Almost thought it was a joke, with the little burglar and all. - MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG A NINJA BURGLAR !!
Good job they can't get in my bedroom, seeing as this house has no stairs..... - wyefye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3go to personal computing in the flash demo, and keep clicking, look at the bottom middle tv... any one see the porn?
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://plutohome.com/support/right.php?section=documents/documentDisplay&docID=261
interesting - elvis314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Potential for something great....I see all this great stuff, yet the website doesn't do much in terms of helping you put it together
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ummm
they ENCOURAGE you to download and install their open source software on spare computers
http://plutohome.com/index.php?section=get_pluto - PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like home automation is becoming a big thing. Elan, Smart Home, etc. Exciting things are happening for geeks
- possum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1doesn't the whole x10 system thing and pvr pretty much do the same thing? this is just a prebuilt com product.
- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah the flash presentation does sound funny. I think she doesn't know what she's saying too, just reading it off a piece of paper. Some parts I think she's tired. I love the whole automation concept though. I agree it's not totally ready for the mainstream yet. The technology for this to happen is still very primative and costly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it was neat, but I wasn't going to digg it, thinking it could be spam... but then noticed that it's all free, definitely a cool article, and definitely a digg.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Home-Electrical-Control.html
- BryanTheCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can already get part of this solution for a fraction of the cost with Salling Clicker:
http://www.salling.com/Clicker
It lets you remote-control any PC or Mac in your house from your bluetooth cell-phone. Best of all, it's easy to write your own plugins for it in order to control additional apps. If you're like me and you already have a PC or Mac hooked up to your TV, it's a nice way to remote-control your media with a device you already carry around with you. - Systembomber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And how the hell does it control your lights?
- October, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doubt it.
"Nerds" might like Pluto but real linux geeks will use http://w3.misterhouse.com:81/ - jaxshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So unnecessary, but awesome nonetheless. I don't know anyone who has more than one big screen in their house. This is for the rich, technology-savvy adults of America.
- marcamillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the price page for the commercial product? Some "nerds" dont have the time 'configuring' their house, they are busy re-building a nix core ;)
- fillup07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Techie home page... all facts, no fluff"
see http://plutohome.com/support/index.php - danknauff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Core knows all.
- BrenBeers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Just what do you think you're doing, Dave? " HAL
A house that has complete control? Seems coll but, a little to 2001: A Space Odyssey for my taste. - BrenBeers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I saw that too. Kinda funny actually. Who ever they hired to build that definatly was having a little fun. Makes me wonder what else is in there.
- niiru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is all really cool BUT, you might want to reconsider the voiceover for the flash presentation. Replace it with more natural speech or at least something that sounds less patronising. :P
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually it does run linux...debian in fact
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you notice where they put the "Commercial-Grade" server in the video? In the fu*king garage where heat and humidity will surely kill any grade of server. Maybe the voiceover was designed to distract from this mistake. Also, I'm not impressed with all the hardware I need to purchase just to use my cell phone as a remote control. No digg.
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yet another Linux Distro. :-) The reason the software is FREE is because it is GPL, they don't "own" it.
X10 got a bad rap on http://slashdot.org/ last week so I'd think twice before blowing your $ on it, there are newer (better?) systems.
The one benefit they offer is that all this stuff has been integrated into one package and they offer support for it, so if you need somebody to hold your hand they can help, but then you wouldn't be a real nerd. ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They also had two home theaters right next to each other...a little obsessed?
- ninjafury, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I use a mac + salling clicker + insteon system to control my apartment. The mac is my server, its connected via DVI to my TV, sending hi def media to it. Insteon controls my lights, and salling lets me control it all thru my phone. I think its better/cheaper/open than the pluto system.
- cair0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2free download = digg++
- dannyweb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone else recognize the voiceover voice from the flash video as the same one that Digium uses for Asterisk?
I think her name is Allison Smith - dasch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But does it run Linux? :)
- mrbelvedr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These guys must have spend countless hours making this work. if it works anything like advertised then i will be extremely impressed.
I have really been waiting a long time (years) for a all in one solution that "just works", this brings us one step closer. The competing systems are very expenisve and closed source.
this is exciting. These guys are giving it away!!! I imagine it will be only a matter of months before some nerds figure out how to use old pc's in lieu of buying their media director boxes. - Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very awesome idea, however, I still think it needs a bit more work, removing the "media director" from every room, just make one huge center server with multiple video cards, you can have all that is stated there, on one machine. Add a bit more of custumization (of course, i've never actually tried it, just judging from the video) and you'll be all set.
- summers311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1feal free to put this together yourself its free and its called asterisk, or check out asterisk@home and your halfway done. and the voice is alison from the asterisk PBX system.
- thatninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They should expand this and get deals so you can have a full installation package with really high end systems and such. They have a lot of potential but the whole set it up your self deal isn't good because an average person doesn't want to do any of that they just want to pay for it and have someone else deal with it. Not ready for widespread use but cool for tech guys that have the time to set it up. Hope it works all like they say it does.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3i hate it when people refer to computers as appliances, since when can my refrigerator calculate Mersenne primes?
- modian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2most. annoying. voiceover. evar.
/and yet I'm strangely aroused -
