I think this is critical. People spend so much time worrying about American kids being a year or two behind kids in India, Japan, etc, but really what difference is that going to make by the time they are 30? We should be focusing on making kids _want_ to learn, on their own, rather then pitting them against their foreign counterparts thousands of miles away for our perverted notion of national pride.

A person who enjoys learning is going to learn for a lifetime, and leave everybody whose only goal was to get a diploma in the dust. The focus on standardized testing is routing the natural curiosity and lust for knowledge that children possess. Our current school system is designed for churning out assembly line workers.

In short: Let kids be kids, do what feels right, and use some discipline to keep them in line. How revolutionary!

I kind of feel this is like forcing your kid to read at 4 months, etc. It might give them a little head-start early on, but I think most children will level out to an average curve after several years.

What's a parent to do! Everything is bad for your children these days... lock them all up and throw away the key! They'll break down the doors when they get old enough!

You can't force children to do things. I've always thought the best way to teach them was by example. Want them to learn how to play the piano? Don't sit them down and force them to take lessons; start playing it yourself and there's a good chance they'll ask "How can I do that too?" at some point.

Classical music was the mass produced pop music of yesteryear. Why do we think its uber intelligent hundreds of years in the future? I love classical music myself, but give me a break.

I am glad that is the case. My son has had Metallica's "And Justice For All" on repeat in his room for 3+ months now.. he is almost 3. He heard it in my car and loved it.. he wont go to sleep without his "tallica". He's had some kind of music in his room constantly since he was born, some classical, some rock, beatles.. all kinds of stuff.

Anybody have any leads on exploring the sound-effects further? The article says that the Mozart music expands people's spatial-temporal reasoning for 20 minutes. Wouldn't it stand to reason that other sound patterns could expand other portions of the brain?
