- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -4/+24 Meanwhile,pet shops keep right on selling them,people keep right on buying them...And when they get too big to manage,people keep right on releasing them.
This is happening all over the country,not just Florida.
A friend of mine,a wildlife rehabber in Texas lost a squirre she was hacking out(preparing for release) to a python. They found it curled up in the squirrel's
enclosure..They killed the python.
And meanwhile,pet shops keep right on selling them,rinse and repeat. - SenorBriano, on 07/20/2009, -5/+17Pythons especially love to eat those small pomeranian dogs that the old people around here adore so much.
- turboe, on 07/20/2009, -3/+15Whacking day needs to make a comeback!
- 17999, on 07/20/2009, -3/+1410 feet's not really that big, seeing how burmese pythons grow to 20 fairly regularly. Heck, I had a 12 foot one in college that made the sacramento bee when it died when the AC went out and we were out of town and the neighbors thought it was a dead body.
/poor Lefty - viper001, on 07/20/2009, -2/+13The climate is just perfect for them down in Florida. Knowing that, it should have been illegal to have them in the state (outside zoos) in the first place.
- 4rp4n3t, on 07/20/2009, -1/+10Well, that's one mark in their favour I guess.
- zakatov, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9wat?
- indyGuy, on 07/20/2009, -2/+11Those are some crazy ***** in Florida.
Around here, we have hunt overpopulated deer. We sound like pussies by comparison. - SMELLtheGluv, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7Yes. Since people always release their golden retrievers into the wild when they get too big. Just imagine how damaging a breeding population of pugs would be if they were introduced into the Everglades!
/face - ShellShock11, on 07/20/2009, -2/+9lol people read AOL news?
- diggmeordie, on 07/20/2009, -1/+7Awesome. I hate those little portable lap dogs that stupid women own. Dumbest trend ever.
- jacobra, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5I think there are a lot of misconceptions about pythons as a whole. SURE there are the huge bastards that kill native wildlife and the occasional human but MOST pythons kept as pets are of the smaller varieties that offer little to no threat to a human or even a cat. Dogs kill many more people than these snakes but nobody is even taking that into consideration because it would be preposterous to even think of something like that. ALL pet owners just need to be RESPONSIBLE for their animals. Problem Solved.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -2/+7The deer were there long before people were. You're the menace, not them.
- Ramenhood, on 07/20/2009, -3/+7The python was probably a village elder thinking if the humans caught someone as big as him, they would stop.
- philoking, on 07/20/2009, -3/+7Hmmm, so we have an organism that goes somewhere they weren't native to, has no natural predators, and does damage to the ecosystem...sounds like we should have been killing people all along of those are the requirements to approve genocide. 12 people in the US have been killed by non-venomous snakes since 1980, that makes them dangerous? That's .0001% the amount of people that have been killed by, um...take your pick...cars? cigarettes? prescription drugs? R-Tarded.....
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -5/+9I know I'm going to get dug to -100000000 but pet cats kill EVERYTHING in an ecosystem. They don't even do it for food, they do it for ***** fun!!!
- spoon088, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4There are far more dogs than pythons kept as pets, but nobody is even taking that into consideration because it would be preposterous to even think of something like that. Dog deaths are also relegated to a few large species. Like hell a toy dog is going to do anything, just like how a corn snake isn't going to hurt anyone.
- Sixagon, on 07/20/2009, -2/+6What people don't realize is that these ***** are fast. A friend of mine's fraternity in college had one as a mascot (this was in Florida). They never fed the ***** thing and one time I walked in it's room and it *jumped* up about four feet looked me in the eye and hissed like a ***** velociraptor. I wouldn't be surprised if they just let it out one night so they wouldn't have to feed it anymore.
- jocknerd, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3They are enacting laws now, but that doesn't solve the current problem. Pythons have invaded the Everglades. Its the perfect environment for them and they are populating. They are a threat to the native wildlife and must be controlled.
- TWiThead, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3The correct line is "I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4t6zNZ-b0A - howea, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Yep, its not for the gators
- jocknerd, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I'll agree that cats are a problem. My neighbor had a cat that killed birds, squirrels, and rabbits almost daily. But I'm glad to say it disappeared. Their other cat never left its porch. My cat never leaves the back deck when its outside. Cats don't kill for fun. They kill because of instinct. Its like playing with a cat with a ball of yarn. They are going to chase it.
- Jman5, on 07/20/2009, -2/+5I never understood what was so great about having reptiles, fish, and amphibians as pets. I've had all 3 and none of them have ever seemed to appreciate me in the least. If given the chance they would probably eat me in a heartbeat.
Dogs love you, and at least cats pretend to love you when they are hungry. But snakes? Not so much... - Jman5, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I never knew the pythons were such a noble race.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3There wouldn't be so many if we hadn't killed or scared away all the native predators.
- footodors, on 07/20/2009, -3/+6what pet shop owners tell people about how this python purchase will end:
uh, a zoo will want it when it's big enough;
they don't really get thet big-urban myth;
they are actually cuter, the bigger they are;
they only get as big as the tank;
change subject - justdru, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3IN OTHER NEWS: Humiliating diarrhea is overcoming Floridian families who stumble upon pythons in the wild. More at 11.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -3/+5If you live in Florida and your cat / dog disappeared this is why
- chocobomog, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2All pythons sold in Florida are required to have transmitters placed in them for this very reason. There are so many regulations on the sales of pythons in Florida that it has created a black market of python sales (used mostly by college students) to avoid the paperwork and transmitter purchase.
- Voide, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3Dogs are a little different then a python...give me an angry stray dog over a 10 foot python any day.
- ummmmmmmmmm, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2hahah, my kitten LOVES killing critters in the house.. one night, a skink somehow got into our house and.. well, just look at the picture.
http://i32.tinypic.com/2drdg84.jpg
RIP - marinist, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1"Officials say the constrictors can produce up to 100 eggs at a time."
Hmm...and how many pythons are needed to make those 100 eggs, just 2 perhaps?
"no natural predators" + Everglades 1M acres = snake trapper job security, forever. - Skitals, on 07/20/2009, -5/+6It's sad they are killing these snakes. Damn irresponsible owners :(
Can you imagine if they did that to stray dogs? Severe the brain on the spot instead of trying to find it a home.
And a ten foot python isn't very large... probably around 30lbs. They can get up over 200lbs. - kurisu10, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1
They're the same as pit bulls. Yeah, there are good, responsible owners. But just like there's always some young thug wanting to fight their pit to make some cash or look gangsta, there's always some idiot who thinks, "I want a snake because they make me look sexy and cool or evil and twisted and then realize they don't want to buy and store dead rats, clean a cage that smells like rotting flesh and let the thing go outside. There are ignorant people in the world who impulse buy without thinking, and nothing will ever change that. If this was a little snake, maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal... but since they're able to grow to child and human killing sizes and thrive in an environment similar to alligators... sure... I think they should be trapped, killed, and banned. It's a pity, but stupid asshats will always ruin it for the rest of us. - jacobra, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I agree that something needs to be done about the everglades. I was just disagreeing with the folks that act like a snake is a loaded gun.
- rmxz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1It's worth noting that cats are a very effective kill undesirable animals (rats) in human-dominated ecosystems (farms, cities) without poisonous chemicals.
- Napiertt, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1So mean...and funny!
- alclone, on 07/20/2009, -4/+5We should eradicate all the god ***** deer in Pennsylvania.
They are the only reason why I go only 40 on local roads at night. - ummmmmmmmmm, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3wtf, stop killing the snakes and take them to people who will take care of them properly. i live with 5 snakes (although none of them are burmese pythons.. 2 red tails, 1 ball python, 1 blood python, and 1 california king snake), they're pretty nice.
- rdoger6424, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1I should put spikes on my front bumper and do my part to control the population
- IAmSam14, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1No its just a lot of people down here are irresponsible with their pets but the climate allows them to have a lot of "exotic ones" ive seen it as long as ive lived here, i had a school friend with 2 monkeys. And having a python was actually kinda common (althought i just stuck to dogs) and a lot of the kids lost theirs
- VicDeZen, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0Actually, Japanese koi (type of carp) will come when called...kind of like a dog. Pretty, quiet and won't destroy furniture. Big plus for those with allergies and those that don't want their furniture destroyed =).
- Eagle193, on 07/20/2009, -2/+1As a resident of Florida, this is all kinds of scary....
- MrKabal, on 07/20/2009, -1/+0Feral house cats are a huge detriment to the environment, especially local fauna, but I think you’ll agree banning them as pets is not the solution. Florida has just issued a law stating all large python owners must register their pets and get them micro-chipped so that people that release / allow escape can be dealt with specifically instead of punishing the large group of people who keep snakes responsibly.
- HelplessSEAL, on 07/20/2009, -4/+2They just got lucky.
- UMDWei, on 07/20/2009, -4/+2GET THESE MONKEY FIGHTING SNAKES OFF OF THE MONKEY FIGHTING PLANE!
- Soniti, on 07/20/2009, -3/+1I would hate to get wrapped up in this constricting debacle..
