- guregu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11He definately rides a moped...with helmet.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11occaisonaly someone writes a sentence on a website like this and they dont use any kind of punctuation and its basically just a huge run on strung togethor with a bunch of ands and i feel kind of bad because i automaticaly assume that person is an idiot even though theyre probably just lazy and i just thought i'd share that with everyone.
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Seems like a nice guy. Would probably make a good neighbor. Not real sharp, so don't entrust him with any big responsibilities or expect any flashes of brilliance from him, and you'll be fine.
oh.....damn
Well, okay. Take those responsibilities away from him when you get a chance...
oh.....***** - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I knew I wouldn't like that story in the fraction of a second that I saw the headline.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This Just In: When you are Drunk it happens in 22.3 seconds
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Of course they are otherwise they'd be called second impressions.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"i am naturally suspicious because most stuff is stolen"
Who cares? It's not like you could know for sure. It's a pawn shop, take their stuff and give them cash and get it over with. - zman64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This topic is covered very well in the book "blink" by Malcolm Gladwell
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does this also apply to judging books by their covers?
- rlahiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that guy in the pic looks lame
- Lifestory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4totally clueless that his photo was placed in such an article.
- priceless721, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i judge people really quickly too from the time that they walk in the store on because i work at a pawn shop-esque store and i have to know who to believe that and i am naturally suspicious because most stuff is stolen
- BRamBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i wont anwser.. I'm afraid of being busted; Let's just say i'm more then happy to live in Europe.
- Shaunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sneaky and anti-social. the things that stand out to me are his eyes, haircut, and yellow plaid shirt.
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that 'snap judgement' is more of a problem for people without much experience. You can't really judge a book by it's cover. The best friend you'll ever have may not look like much.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Apparently most of the United State's cannot trust their ability to judge a person by their first impressions.

excellent recommendation. - Shaunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't think so. I would think that you would have already established an initial impression before meeting the person, and I think that since you are not able to make visual contact, it would take longer.
- ah802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I meet a babe.. I let the other head make the decision. And yes it's that fast, it's a no brainer.
- lennon2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call BS - to the second part. Unless you're so damn lucky.
- scratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2George Bush.. What's your first 'fraction of a second impression' of him?
Answers below >>>>>>> - netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like that guy off smallville.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gives me "Chester the Molester" Vibes.
- oilcan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i took this little test of theirs, and the best I can come up with is that this breakdown that they try to impose in your mind is utter *****.
psychology is by its nature a very difficult science to quantify, but god damn if these dudes don't make the biggest mess of it I've ever seen. - MasterGrief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Scientists also say that we make our judgements on people in the first half second we meet them. And if scientists say it it MUST be true.
- blobdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He is a bit socially retarded and tries to make up for it by being clumsily extroverted.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Serial murderer
- oilcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is so much more going on in a 'snap judgment' of a person than their face and appearance.
people experience meeting a hideous face yet are capable of not knee-jerking in horror. not everyone that is ugly is a bad person, and we know this intuitively.
the gestalt of our biology or being does not stop right outside of the dimensions of our body. you can put two people on an EKG in the same room and measure their heartbeats on the others.
everything we do or think or believe has a biological signature latent within it. it is these things combined with our preconceived notions of appearance that produce our snap judgments about others. - scienceguy8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody who found this interesting may wish to consider picking up a copy of Malcolm Gladwell's book 'Blink', which essentially is a longer exposition of the same concept, with some other interesting points and is very well written. Find it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316172324/sr=8-1/qid=1156432258/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-8306864-2556700?ie=UTF8
- flmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you read the article the study test people buy showing them a picture for a fraction of a second, then asking them if they find the person in the picture trust able. This doesn't not lead me to believe that our minds instantly forms an impression of a person based on what they look like, because if the same test where done on me, I would just remember the image and spend a bit more time to make my decision. What this study really shows is the amount of time required to save a mental image of a person.
- akgrandhi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0David Myers' book "Intuition" talks a little about this.
- scisar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well actually nothing new, that "view" is called saccade and long known. it scans as fast as 360degrees within a fraction of a second. our brain uses it for lot's of reasons, dangers (phobias) for example are identified with it, but on lower brain level. actually our brain can't filter all information because our "memory" just isn't big enough. so most gets "deleted" immediately.
- hydromachy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This has some interesting implications for, say, people who meet and speak online before meeting face-to-face. Does the effect still apply when words have been exchanged?
- thejimi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1For some reason this site is crashing my browsers (Firefox and IE), someone wanna copy paste the story here for me ?
