- bluepill2, on 05/19/2008, -0/+17No! Says the Vatican... it belongs to God...
- Gerfervonbob, on 05/19/2008, -1/+18No! Says the man in Washington, it belongs to the poor.
- Ne007, on 05/19/2008, -0/+15Who cares about the U.N.?
If an Island demands sovereignty then who is going to stop it?
Plus they could strategically place themselves within multiple countries. - theshizzler, on 05/19/2008, -1/+16No! Says the man in Moscow, it belongs to everyone.
- xkorbin, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14I rejected these answers.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 05/19/2008, -1/+14Look out for the GAWD DAMN SPLOICERS!
- skidzilla, on 05/19/2008, -3/+16No Gods or Kings, only Man!
- aladrin, on 05/19/2008, -0/+12Say what you want, 1 game about possible genetic mutation and destruction of utopia is not going to make me think this is a bad idea. (It might -be- a bad idea, but a game isn't going to make me think that.)
- LuigiBrasile7, on 05/19/2008, -3/+15Pirates will love this.
- fantasyflamz, on 05/19/2008, -1/+12"A man has a choice. I chose the impossible. I built a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the great would not be constrained by the small, where a scientist would not be bound by petty morality. I chose to build....Rapture."
- Memitim, on 05/19/2008, -0/+11Lovely idea, but the problem with the US and the other 190+ nations isn't their locations, but their people. Where people go, things will go to *****. Well, except for the Middle East as it would suck regardless of whether people were there or not; WAY too freaking hot.
- n8dude, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10I'd go for that. Sign me up. As long as I get a decent connection to the internet, i'm fine.
- BlankLeeloo, on 05/19/2008, -2/+12We all know how this will end.
- 88chrisb, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10Instead, I chose something different.
- Ne007, on 05/19/2008, -2/+11With a U.S. battleship sinking this thing? Yeh..that's what I thought.
- calantus, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10who the ***** cares about the UN? seriously they aren't the ruler of the world. ***** them.
- ssj2119, on 05/19/2008, -5/+13Would you kindly let people know this isn't a good idea?
Also, who can imagine a Leonidas type kicking a blasphemous visitor off the edge 300 style? - xkorbin, on 05/19/2008, -1/+9***** Splicers.
- barc0de, on 05/19/2008, -3/+10The United Nations bars national recognition for artificial constructs and places them under the juristiction of the nearest country. So this is pointless.
- smhTheory, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7I'll bring the objectivism if they have the gene-splicing covered.
- Protonz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5Why do you think they would want to have anything to do with the UN?
- burketo, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6google sealand. nuff said.
- Scheissen, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5Only libertarians, no socialists, fascists, or whatever they're calling themselves today.
- elf25, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Should become real popular if McCain wins.
- skidzilla, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5THIS, IS, Seasteadiiiiiing!!!
- barc0de, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5Well, the only way to achieve legitimate statehood is to be recognised by lots of other countries. That is why the Vatican gets to be a country while Taiwan doesn't.
If you are going for "de-facto" independence - then the trick would be to anchor off a peacefull nation with no military. Iceland might be a good choice. Unless you try to take thier cod. - MacEnvy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5As they say on the second page of the article, these types of dwellings are much less attractive to pirates than, say, container ships. As Friedman says, there is a big difference in the crew-to-merchandise ratio, and I also suspect pirates will meet more resistance trying to rob someone's home than they do trying to steal their boss' merch. Especially if those homeowners happen to be well-armed libertarians.
- cyberdog900, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4I want one. I want one now, and nobody will tell me what the frickin' UN is going to do about it! I'll just ask for some missiles from Iran, and I should be fine. You just need the weapons first, that's all. They should have them by the time my meager salary can be used to aquire this utopian dreamhouse!
- jbennett1128, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Yes. ***** the UN. Who made them the police of the world? Not me.
- whalt, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Apparently the first step is to launch your 3D modeling software.
- skidzilla, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Does anyone remember the name of that Australian(?) tv show that featured an ocean colony like this and a girl from another planet?
- therusher, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4IT'S A TRAP!
- BridgeBurner, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Sign me up.
- fjklein6501, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Inspirational and promising!
- deathbyspatula, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3She swam around with dolphins and stuff, and I think I remember Disney playing it in the mid 90's.
No clue as to what the name of it was. - spudnic, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3It's not that it wont go down well, they just have no reason to.
- patrissimo, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Which is why we plan to fly a "flag of convenience", and get left alone, just like all the rest of the ships on the ocean. When was the last time you heard about the UN paying attention to the rules of a cruise ship?
- madwaxer, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3it seems this would only make sense if the platform owners were going to ultimately connect all of these together somehow so can visit each other. doing so on waves smashing into the object's sides would be crazy during storms that may push their homes away or into each other. at least by connecting them together you could have them network with each other using fiber to relay live data about the ocean activity to sync their ballast levels. and even share the data streams. you could even house data farms on them to share their data with some new satellites which will be in orbit by then. hopefully with better latency times. heck why not just connect them to the submarine cable network?
- D4rkDrago0n, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Do you mean PirateBay is going to move their servers here
or actual Pirate vs Ninja pirates.
both are likely.... - PicklesNCheese, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3I think this is a great idea. Even if it never works, I love seeing innovation at work. All big ideas are crazy until someone ignores all the naysayers and actually pulls them off. Sign me up!
- Renork, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2The interesting thing about a small, relatively close community, isolated country like this that is gives the community immense control over the population. Break too many laws and you get sent back to wherever you came from. No worries about illegal immigration, how the ***** is someone going to sneak into the country and not be noticed? It has a lot of potential, I would be more than willing to participate in this 'experiment'. As a psychology major considering directions for my masters at the moment I would even consider specializing in areas that would qualify me for work in such an environment. Where do I sign up?
- leatherback, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Looks like a prison to me, where is the helipad?
- Nick22, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2ya, but rapture is an underwater city that went to hell due to everyone modifiying their dna and going crazy.
This is really nothing like bioshock - davidmesaaz, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Sounds like Galts Gulch out of Altas Shrugged.
- ssj2119, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2bwahahahahah
- patrissimo, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Yes, the plan is to connect many of these platforms together to form a floating city. We believe that they can be rigidly connected, perhaps in a hexagonal array, without smashing into each other in storms, but more engineering work is required.
- Chadrew, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2I want to live there...
- zaphar, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I don't see arrests likely, I'd bet some of these "platforms" would be carrying better weapons than the attacking countries. Since there would be no restrictions on weapons, I can't see any unauthorized aerial vehicles getting close enough to drop "swat" teams off.
- wbuch, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Who said anything about UN rules? Poor you, so stuck in your government-only mentality...
